    Inking John Byrne - Hawkman

Since I decided not to do the Zatanna pages, I thought I'd try a more of a classic and found this John Byrne Hawkman page. Let me know what you think.

I have mixed feelings about this page. It looks good but nothing really technical about it. I hope at some point that you do a Jim Lee piece. Over the years, the one thing that has always stood out about Jim's pencils is that only Scott Williams and Jim Lee can ink Jim Lee and make him look good. And maybe you'll ink some Travis Charest? What ever you do, stay away from David Finch. I see so many David Finch ink samples at conventions it aint even funny.

Keep up the good work man. I love your enthusiasm.

Thanks dude! I appreciate that a lot. I just may take the leap and get over my fear of Lee to give it a try. His lines can be intimidating. I'm at the moment just trying to ink varieties of things. With each piece that I've done, I feel better and better at the end.

    Anyway, here's this one's update...

Lookin good! Hawkman looks awesome. Watch that tangent his toe is making with the building. Looks great otherwise.

You couldn't pick a better storyteller to ink than Byrne.

I like what I see so far, but since I've taken a shot at inking a couple of Byrne pages, I'll give you this one word of advice. Try not to just trace his work line for line. He tends to shorthand portions of his pages, because he draws differently when he's not inking his own work. You really have to have an eye for actual embellishment when inking Byrne's work. It's the reason guys like Janson and Palmer are best suited to ink guys like Byrne, and Scott Williams is best suited for Jim Lee. They're actual embellishers.

Can't wait to see it finished.
Money can't buy you happiness, but it will pay for the search.

looking very good and i'm no inker but the right leg (our left) jumps out at me because of the spot black. it just looks flat. maybe like popninja pointed out some embellishment would work here? good to see so many inking wips being posted up here these days! not being an inker it's like magic watching the lines pop out!

Very good work! Byrne pencil are rough in this one and they require some experience and inked page under the belt, but you did a good work here and it means that you're improving a lot, developing a "taste" and understanding how the inking should work.

According to me the best thing I see here is the page balancing, that's really good.

You're improving, but your lineweights sense and understanding has to improve more (sorry i know I'm a pain in the neck), but I see so motivation and potential that I'd like to see you really mastering this technique.

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate all the feed back. This is where it ended up at. Honestly, I found the last panel to be the hardest of the five to ink.

Looks great! The last panel was probably the most fun though, huh?

Thanks dude! And not really, no. I don't equate difficulty with fun. I actually had the most fun with panel 3.
