Movies Official The Amazing Spider-Man Discussion Thread

With Spider-Man now being released I followed jharker's suggestion to open a new thread where the movie can now be discussed.

Personally, I loved the movie but if anyone's interested, here's the review by Mark Kermode, my favorite film critic. He might share the opinions of some of you guys here as he isn't perfectly happy with it but liked it anyway. There are no spoilers in the review..

I wasn't perfectly happy with it and I think the things they could have done better would have been easy to do. But having said all that, I did quite like it. There were many details that I thought were well done and the tease for the sequel had me boggled. I honestly don't have a clue who that might have been.

That kermode review is pretty spot on. I like his idea that this new film will probably be more significant to younger people who might not have vivid memories of the previous ones or maybe grew out of them.

It's the main problem really, because most of us have seen those previous ones plenty of times and have specific memories of seeing those for the first time. I can't dissacociate this one from the others film as much, even though i didn't like the previous film all that much. It also doesn't help that they're following the formula of the previous ones almost to a tee.

It kinda sucks that the mentor/father figure storyline would've been perfect for the lizard, if they hadn't applied that one already to villains who could've been written differently.
If this was the origin we got in the first place I would've probably loved it and I don't think most of the gripes people might have with it would have existed.

I do feel it's got some pacing problems and the fact that the lizard himself looks so cartoonish and out of tone with the rest of the film is a problem for me as well. (I think that's actually an inherent problem with all the Spidey villains). But I might have forgiven those more if I hadn't seen tcertain things done a little better in those other films...

I'll say this though, I walked away a little dissapointed, but not exactly sad. I figured I probably wouldn't see this again even though I planned to, but I'm actually coming back on that desicion. I might even like it better seeing it a second time without the hubris and over exitement I had.

Because certain scenes are still swimming in my head (this scene and the swinging scene right after that one are pretty much Spider-man perfection to me). I could watch those over and over again. And I actually was invested in Peter Parker's life and the death of uncle Ben this time.

It's something none of the previous films managed to do for me, so I already appreciate this film for what it managed to do on that front.

It's probably Osborn, or they could retcon it as someone working for Osborn. But they didn't make that clear, and that scene came off as bit weird and laughable to me. But I did like the idea of Osborn scheming in the background.

I spoiled myself silly for this movie by the way with all the clips and trailers. Anyone else notice they cut a lot out of the final film? Dr. Ratha just simply dissapears and we're left to assume he got killed. Even though he was shown captured in plenty of trailers.
Looks like they either abandoned most hints of the mystery of peter Parker or it's just a case of the marketing department trying to make it more significant than it is... I believe two lines in the trailers, the "I you want the truth peter, come and get it" and "Do you think what happened to you Peter, was an accident?" are actually Frankensteinian products of being stitched together from other lines.

Well, that doesn't make me want to see it more than before, since all the issues and intuitions I had from the trailers seem to be true: nothing new, let's add even more origins and explanations, treading ground that's already been covered... Rehash of the same story all over again... but not as good (from the guy's review). And we'll change the angle of the camera!
Anyways... Still haven't decided whether I'll see it or not, but chances seem even slimmer than before.

Well, what else were they supposed to do to the story that hadn't already been covered? And that critic said it best, and it's what I think of every time I think about this reboot. Spider-Man 2 is the benchmark, not just of the first trilogy, but of comic films in general. It's a great movie. If they weren't going to shoot to outshine that one, then what's the point?

BTW, I peeped the Lizard toy at Target the other night. Dumbest looking thing I've ever seen. I hope he looks better in the movie.
Money can't buy you happiness, but it will pay for the search.

Skip the origin story entirely perhaps? I think audiences can figure out where Spiderman came from by now, if not they could rent the movie from 10 years ago

There's no harm i it either. We used to do it all the time for big movies, make a seperate thread once the movie comes out.
It's easier to talk freely in a new discussion topic rather than cluttering up an old newstopic and tip toe around for people who haven'tseen the movie. (It's also easier makes it easier to find back in the archive).

I wonder how much of the familiarity problem is actually caused by the studio/leftover producers from the previous films stifling creativity by wanting to churn out the same formula over and over again. Because it obviously made them a lot of money the first three times.
I guess they thought hiring new talent and having them give the formula a new lick of paint would be enough.

If that's the case, then that's a problem that wouldn't have been solved by having the fourth film be a straight sequel to the previous ones (with or without the cast and directors from previous films)

I think there's enough of a consensus now that says there's technically nothing "bad" about the new film per sé. Acting and directing is all adequate and the writing isn't that bad for a summer movie, it's just overly familiar. So I feel kinda bad for Marc Webb, 'cause he did a pretty good job for someone who only did one smaller film before. But I get the feeling he won't get credit for the work he did, and all of the blame if it doesn't become a success...

Its a catch 22. You either tell his origin the way it is in the comic (and first film) and people complain that its not different enough, or you change everything so that it feels new but risk fans complaining they changed too much.

They need this film to set up their new Spider-Man world, and I expect that the 2nd movie will feel a lot more fresh and interesting because the studio won't be held back by an origin story and can branch out into new territory.
