I don't know if there was an official case decision, but part of it is also that in the adult industry, just filming sex doesn't cut it anymore, people can get that for free on the internet very easily now.
In order to keep the money coming in, they're needing to do things amateur producers can't or won't. In some cases, that means higher production values or specialty subject matter, and in this particular case it means both, in the form of "satire" or "parody" productions (which are protected by the 1st Amendment) that ride off the public recognition of known properties.
What's really funny is that at least some of them are pretty good parodies. I've only seen the one that parodies classic campy Batman, but "Dale DaBone" does a wicked Adam West impersonation.
