Thread: cintiq for comics?

Photoshop CAN do most everything that Manga Studio can do (MS has a few dedicated tools that I wish PS would steal, like the shape tools) but you would need to spend time customizing it and you'd be using a cannon to kill a fly. Manga Studio is built specifically for creating sequences of pages that contain sequences of separated illustrations designed to express a narrative. Right out of the box it helps you to organize pages, create panels that can be focused on as individual drawings, and it contains a dedicated toolset to simulate inking that's unlike anything else I've ever used.

Last but not least, it functions in a dedicated hi-resolution bitmap environment, which is perfect for B&W lineart. There are no shades of grey, everything is either fully black or fully white, allowing for razor-sharp delineation of line. At 600-1200dpi the eyes aren't likely to pick out the jagged edge of the aliased line, but the tools know exactly where that edge lies.

For drawing B&W work, it's my weapon of choice. Generally I use MS to create the line art, and PS for full-color work and final processing prior to client delivery.
Making me consider trying it out. How big of a learning curve would you say is needed to get used to it?

If you're used to working in Photoshop already, then not a big one. If you're completely new to digital drawing, then you've got to deal with that, and it usually takes a couple months to feel even remotely comfortable drawing in a new way.

But if that's not a problem, then the Manga Studio interface is very similar to Photoshop's. It's mostly about learning the ways in which it's different, and what it does better and what it doesn't.

As I've mentioned in the running MS thread here, I use it in a very basic way (in fact, even though I own EX4 I'm still using EX3, because I like the old interface). Much like Photoshop, there's a wide array of functions that I don't bother with because I don't need 'em in order to get the results I want. I've got pages up on DA if you want to see examples of what I've done. The stuff I did for Skullkickers #12 is the most recent (a little less than a year ago).

Thanks! I draw digitally on PS, so I will check it out.

Do you know if I can import my custom brushes and actions fron PS to MS?

Who needs pinch zoom? The LAST thing I wanna do is constantly rub my fingers all over the screen. Anyway, it would be far less comfortable to stop drawing and pinch zoom than it is to simply click a single key on my Nostromo controller (my left hand rests on it at all times to run my hotkeys) and activate the zoom tool.

As I've said several times already, I swear by the Nostromo N52. Anyone who works digitally and doesn't have one is working with one hand tied behind their back. IMagine being able to access every tool and function you ever use in Pshop or MS without ever touching a keyboard, accessing a menu or changing the position of your drawing hand. The only thing more efficient and convenient would be telepathy.

I don't know. Honestly, I'm not sure if you'd want to... MS is a different environment with it's own custom pens/brushes. But you can read up on it, they've got a pretty comprehensive tutorial/manual that comes built into the software. I won't be surprised if it turns out you can.

I would love to see what pro comic book artists have to say about that. Far as I know, the Cintiq is still the industry standard.
