Yeah, not at all, man. I'm not feeling anything underhanded in the least in this conversation... and I don't want you to feel attacked.

What we ARE going for here in pummel, is to push ourselves. Part of that, is coming up with poses and the like. A year or so back, we had one competitor use a DVD cover to render and awesome Buffy pic. Was it good? You bet 'cha. But it was basically just recreating the cover - a design already conceptualized by an art team working on that box art.

This is a tough call... and I want you to know that there's no malice in it, but as the LHW Commish, I'm going to say that your piece/pose is too close to this piece.

and ask that you try to submit something else.

If you disagree with this, feel free to PM me and we can chat further. I really don't want this to be in any way negative - i think you did a fine job on the piece. I just think that it doesn't match the rules as we've laid them out.

I understand your argument spidey, and I certainly dont discount photography as a form of art. My point in that respect is that my art was an interpretation of a life photo. Any changes to proportion or rendering are artistic liscence, but I concede that the upper body of the photo and my art are the same..I just didnt think that that was a problem..since illustrators and artists do it every day. I certainly wont argue the point any further. If you or other artists I respect can only see this as a swipe, and see NO other merit to the peice beyond that, than Ive lost my audience any way. As I said before, Im happy to start a new peice using a different spin than photo realistic. I certainly dont wont to spark a debate over a subject that has obviously been beaten to death long before today. Thanks agin for your honest remarks.

Thx Jugg...I have no problem with that at all. Given this was my first pummel peice I just didnt want to be incorrectly labled going forward. I cant say I will finish, because Im going to Herocon in NC tommorow, but I will give it my best.

Drawdan I too didn't think you were trying to pull the wool over our eyes, and I do see merit in your art. Just not as part of a competition where your opponent wasn't expecting to, in part, go up against a professional photographer. I totally recognize the changes you made and rhe work you put into this piece, but when this is suppose to be a one on one battle this kind of feels like a tag match.

Personally, I feel like enough was changed for it to not be a totally blatant swipe. Unfortunately, I also feel like if someone can pick out your reference and post it up and it was obviously referenced, it goes against the your own work rule.

Just do your best on another one, or lightbox a different upperbody and paste in in. If you lose or don't get one in, you'll be right where you were at the beginning of this month. Pummel's really not about ranks, the ranks help fuel competition, it's about improving as a (comic) artist.

Damn, I really feel for ya, drawdan. I think it's clear that you just weren't clear what qualified as a reference infringement in the rules, and it must really suck to have to start from scratch when I can see how much time and effort was put into your first piece. That marker texturing on the lizard is awesome. I'm really glad you have time to do something new, though, and can't wait to see it!

I think to err on the side of staying in the rules if you have to grab photo ref that you don't/can't shoot yourself, stick to those that are specifically made for artists to use. There's stock artists on dA, actual physical books, and ImagineFX will also include human anatomy references specifically to draw/paint from every few issues. Not only do you have free license from the photographers, but they were also shot with the knowledge that they would be used as reference, so are usually a little easier to work from. It's still hard to make them not look flat and then costuming and all that is up to you, but then you aren't using lighting/composition that was intended as someone else's art.
