(See? I say "I'll leave this be." And then Wassy says: "No, it's okay..." Then I can't help myself

Like Dfbovey said; "Length of the story told doesn't even come into play in my mind. It's the quality of the art."

I would rephrase it a bit saying; "Nothing else matters except the quality of the art, and the skills involved to produce a piece of art"

That's why i can't accept your statement that because of some kind of a story in Wassys' painting or whatever other reason you might think of it's better than the Royos' pic. (You can take any other two paintings/drawings)

Moreover you probably already knew the story when you looked at Wassys' painting - while i never read those books and to me it's just a girl with dragons, hence i compare those pics only on the basis of their art quality.
I totally see your point, and I think we'll have to agree to disagree (Which is way cool).

To help you see my side (feel free to disagree with ) Let me illustrate with an analogy:

Let's compare a sculpture to a Ferrari. Both are aesthetically pleasing, both required artisans to do the work, both required a good deal of knowledge of engineering and skill working with metals to make them work. But no one expects the sculpture to be driven about, that's fine. No one expects the Ferrari to soar thousands of feet above the ground, either (At least, it SHOULDN'T be thousands of feet above the ground o.O), they have different missions as art pieces.

To me, you need to be able to sculpt to make the Ferrari, but you don't need a knowledge of high performance engines to make a sculpture. And if your mission is to be the best automaker in the world, showing off your sculpting skills, though very vital and important, isn't all you need to show.

Wassy has an awesome Jaguar here (I don't know you well enough yet to say "Fiat"... but I thought it ;p Hey... put the razor blade down....o.O). And compared to Michelangelo's David (The Royo piece), that Jaguar is probably not quite the pinnacle of art... but since we are an "automobile" forum, it fits the call to the job.

I'll make a disclaimer: This is in no way to disparage pinups or single frame art. I'm simply saying "Telling a story" is a factor when I vote as much as weight of line or proportions. If I have a better artistic piece of the main dude from GoT (I haven't seen it, either... nor read the books... I just have hard-core friends ) standing there looking bored, I'm going to vote Wassy because there is no story there. And we are storyteller artists.

Exactly that is the reason why you can't compare the two.

Here you start to mix apples and oranges. I understood your car/art example, i just simply think that is a false analogy.
Because you can compare art-wise how a car such as Ferrari looks like to any sculpture or whatever, but if you'll start to compare the mechanical skills that make that car go to art skills that are required to make a sculpture.
It would be a false analogy, because those two things simply require different skills and knowledge - like comparing apples to oranges.

Btw i have a modified (did it myself) 97 Fiat Brava ...so there is nothing wrong with Fiat.

Again, it shouldn't matter on what forum you're on....because if you judge art on other basis than skills and art quality, you would end up saying that a stick man is totally better than a Vallejo painting because we are on the "stick-men" forum right now.

    I don't agree.

I actually wanted to ditch this discussion few posts ago, as i kinda understood where it's gonna lead but i'm simply so sick and tired (personally) of people stating that skills and art quality don't matter anymore, what matters is __________ (insert here whatever you want- imagination/story telling/originality/soul...etc).
It's my "elitist" personal view on art so i don't expect from anyone to actually agree with me.

Open for commissions and work....PM me.

Oh! Wait! I was saying nothing of the sort! And I think you may have sort of thought I was... What I was saying was unlike your traditional artists, comic artists have the ADDED expectation to do everything right AND be able to tell a story. Since that's the case, I factor that in to my vote. I kinda wish I had said that at first, because I think I have led you astray. I was word-dancing so that it didn't sound like I thought Wassy sucked because she's a traditional artist. (I suck at word-dancing) I don't think storytelling is MORE important than skill, I think it's ALSO important... and ultimately the goal of any sequential artist (AFTER you master all of the other skills).

Anyway, just to clear the air: I'm completely with you about the "Art skills aren't important, Fuzzy dice and shrunken heads are what's REALLY important" thing. That wasn't where I was going I personally can't stand South Park for that very reason.

Juggs: You are clouding the issue, my friend I think if your goal is to make books of pinups, you become extremely niche and you have a future full of lots and lots of rejection letters
