2 cents= You may want to spot a few blacks before you begin to balance this one out. Suggestions would be his left leg, tail, and right collar and coat area. The area under his chin and right arm is a bit hard to read and you don't wanna muck it up in the inks. I'd go real bold on his left hand maybe even total overlapping his right leg in most areas.

    Jonathan,

Pretty nice drawing, dude! I really like it a lot! I think it could use stronger lighting and a better lighting strategy so I worked up a quick PS overlay for you. I hope you find it helpful.

Really digging your work. You just keep getting better and better, so keep up the great work!

Hey guys. Thanks for the suggestions. Since getting Manga Studio, I've mostly been working out my shadows in a layer over the pencils before doing the inks, kinda like what Loston is talking about with a separate sheet of paper.

Here are my inks for this...not quite sure how i feel about the halftones. Thoughts?

I like the final inks, but I liked the pencils too. The foreshortening on the hand is just such that the tail isn't lost/muddled in the pose. Wish this was the basis for the CGI model on the movie coming out next month. Classic Lizard, not the generic lovechild of a Enemy Mine, Last Starfighter, and the V mini-series reptilian alien threesome.

Manga Studio usually makes for sloppy inks personally, but you sir got this precise if I've ever seen it.
Also, growing up reading Manga alongside western comics, I'm biased and love the tones. They are undervalued in IMHO. See what I did there? Under VALUED? (As opposed to spot blacks, hardy har har.)

Thanks! Yeah, a lot of people use Manga Studio very sloppily. They just throw their hand around and expect the line correction to do the work for them. I turn my line correction very low most of the time, and cut off tapering completely. I just prefer it cause I am very anal about my inking so the undo button and the infinite possibilities of tiny detail work for me.

Tones in manga weren't something I ever got super pumped about, but I've noticed some western artists doing some pretty cool stuff with them lately and so I've decided to toy with them.

Like the final result, good work! May you try a version without halftones though?
