I'll add Holland into potential favourites, and although they lost 3-0 to Russia, I reckon Italy may be dark horses...

England will struggle to get out of the group stages.

I'm Russian, and even i find it hard to celebrate those 3-0 victories .....they can beat Brazil 5-0 in some meaningless "friendly" match and lose to Andorra 0-3 in an important match....bleh.

The cup hasn't even started yet and I'm already sick of it. I'm wondering if this is different in other countries, but over here retailers always treat the soccercups like it's the christmas season or something.
I've been seeing commercials for weeks on end now of chains and brands trying to sell loads and loads of orange merchandising junk to the people.

Every supermarket chain has their own tie in where you can get orange plastic figurines of trading cards or whatever with every purchase over a certain amount.
I mean, it's fun seeing people don the national color during these things, but it's getting out of hand with all the junk they collect for a sportstournament that only lasts a couple of weeks.

I'm really curious if this just happens to be a cultural thing or if this is a common practise. I certainly has very little to do with the actual sport.

Also my birthday was yesterday so I purchased the Uruguay alternate jersey which I'll probably customize with my last name.

My GF also ordered me customized adidas f50 cleats with my name and Uruguay flag stitched on the heel! Can't wait to get them and try them out on the pitch!

Yeah i think it's the same all around the world, it depends on the season and the sport that is popular in that specific country...and it really has very little to do with the actual sports event. It's just some people trying to earn some extra (a lot of extra) cash on the back of the fans.
Imo, if you don't like it or you don't care enough about the sport, don't buy it... no one says you have to like it or care about it.
