PSF: Become a Master of your Emotions

    The Challenge:

Pick an attractive female character, draw a portrait in each of these seven states:

    1. Vanilla. No emotion, just setting up the likeness.
    2. Rage
    3. Panic
    4. Come Hither Lustful Flirtation
    5. Extreme Sleep Deprivation
    6. Overcome with Sadness
    7. Joy

The focus of this fight is to express extreme emotional states while maintaining a likeness. (Sorry Sketchbook, I sort of forgot to add this, a little brainburn going on )

Nice job to everyone and to Sketchbook for coming up with this challenge! I think this was a valuable challenge as I don't often have the opportunity to draw many of these expressions. I should have probably drawn all 7 at once, but instead sort of did them one at a time and in no particular order. This sort of thing would be very valuable if you were drawing up a model-sheet for a character you were going to be drawing over and over again with all sorts of emotional changes through the course of your story. Another one, like the turn-around, that I will probably return to in the future !

I should note that the first two portraits in mine are vanilla, and I did the rest of the emotions out-of-order, and unlabeled. So If you can correctly guess what's what, then, well, points for me because that means I did my job right ^_^

I'll do some crits later, I gotta get ready for work! This was fun!

To my fellow fighters on this one: This wasn't laziness or "putting crap up", this represented the pre-sketch I had done for this project... I had tried seven times to make this one work, and I just wasn't getting results at all... As time ran out I couldn't do anything to make the seventh iteration work, so I scanned in the pre-sketch (since it was, sadly, the best of the lot). I don't want you to think I was disrespecting any of my fellow fighters-I respect you all immensely .

I went with VagabondX because even without labeling the headshots (like some of the other guys did) I could tell exactly what was going on. Good work from all you guys.

Voted Sketchbook because I love the over-the-top animation style expressions. Believe it or not, I was trying for that as well and even thought I was somewhat over-the-top on the expressions but, alas, now know I fell short.

VagabondX: While at first glance I like what I see here (these faces are certainly the best-drawn of the lot!), the faces are somewhat inconsistent. The amount of forehead, and size + shape of the chin, jaws and noses are just noticeably different. You probably could have pushed the emotions a bit more on some, too. What I think gets me the most is the random sketches here-and-there. I realize this isn't a normal street fight, but you wouldn't leave studies and sketches in your other pieces, so why do that here?

EmperorSteele: Your shameless and transparent attempt at using boobs to garner votes isn't going to work here. Carrying on....

Scmarooney: While I dig your pencil work (and I'm loving that layout!), there's quite a few problems here. In most of these shots, she either looks old, manly, or just plain deformed. It really has everything to do with the nose-down: Fully rendered nose, over-done lips, lines around the mouth, broad chin and jaw line, big/muscular neck... it's not attractive, which unfortunately was one of the criteria of the contest. I certainly dig the eyes and hair, and you certainly know what parts of the face move when certain emotions are being conveyed... unfortunately, you went a bit overboard =(

Sketchbook: While these are good, i have 2 main problems, though they're more of a subjective nature: One being, I think maybe you went a bit TOO extreme -especially with the hair-. The second is that I prefer your little self-sketch more than everything else you drew. Other than that, these work and fulfill the criteria. I really don't have much else to say besides "good job".

Aabh: Sorry to see you couldn't bring your A-Game! It happens... just be glad that this fight won't affect your otherwise flawless record ;-) CC-wise, your "Neutral" face is looking a bit "sad", and I can't tell what the right-most face is supposed to be.

Incidentally, Scott McCloud spent the better part of a whole chapter in Making Comics dedicated to this very subject! I didn't reference it for this contest, but now that we're done here, I recommend everyone find a copy and take a look, it's a fascinating and educational read!

Can't argue with any of that. Well, except the whole best-drawn faces part.
