Reminds me of a saying attributed to Jim Shooter - that the "Big 2" comic book industry only writes about "Truth, Justice and the American Way", they do not necessarily live according to the values they write about...
Comics Alliance has an incredible article expressing my doubts about supporting Marvel and DC comics.
For many years I have had trouble reconciling my desire to buy and read comics with my desire to see the artists (both written and illustrative) fairly compensated.
Yet I also worked for many years in a job that required me to write, edit, and recommend contracts that made my company responsible for millions of dollars in spend. I know how important it is to review a contract before signing it or presenting it to a Director level person to sign.
Make no doubt about it. I want to see "The Avengers" this Summer. I wanted to see both "Iron Man" movies. I just cannot spend my money to support an organization such as Marvel.
Now David Brothers at Comics Alliance has spoken for me. I quote him below.
"The lack of grace, of basic dignity being afforded to these guys is disgusting. The law is on the side of the corporations, but it is clear to me that Marvel and DC are morally and ethically in the wrong. They employed an exploitative, dishonest, and insulting assault on creator's rights in the past, and they're reaping the benefits of that assault now."

No, I will not be buying any "Before Watchmen" comics. No, I will not go see "The Avengers". I would not be happy with myself if I did.
Yes, I am aware this will have no impact on either of these corporations. That is not the point. I am not trying to punish anyone. I simply must live with myself. My personal ethics will not allow me to do otherwise.

Read the article. Remembered that nobody is putting a gun to content creators heads and forcing them to sign contracts. Went about my life.

I did not start watching "Walking Dead" until this past season. Sure enough I find out Tony Moore might be getting screwed. So, yes, I might stop watching it unless it turns out Mr. Moore did not get screwed. How will that be determined? By the way this processes through the legal system.
BTW, I HATE this hear-say stuff!
I wish people would STOP trusting people! When you are talking about business trust goes out the window. It is really frustrating to see so many people sign bad contracts. And it doesn't take much.
Stan Lee, for instance, got screwed out of his portion of the profits for the first "Spider-man" movie. Now this is a guy who should know better, but apparently he and his lawyers confused "net" for "gross". It can happen to anyone, but you should NEVER TRUST ANYONE when it comes to business. And READ the contract. Make sure your requirements are in writing!

You used guilt!
It is super effective!
Don't read this link until after you see Avengers, or unless you feel no guilt!!!
If I stopped watching, listening or reading everything where somebody was being screwed or thought they were treated unfairly...I'd have no entertainment at all! As far as I'm concerned, the creators know going into it with DC or Marvel that they no longer own rights to their work. You can't be a big ol' crybaby twenty years or more after the fact. People need to read their contracts. You can't get screwed over when you make the initial agreement! These companies aren't stupid, they hire lawyers from the get go to handle ownership and rights to their titles and characters. I'll keep buying as long as they keep making the things I enjoy. And some of the crybabies that were too eager to make a name for themselves need to STFU with their whining.
I'm not going to miss out on "The Avengers" or any other movies because some writer or artist is somewhere crying over their regrets.

See my reference to Stan Lee and the first "Spider-man" movie. People sign bad contracts all the time. Even those who have a lot of experience and the blessings of the legal office. I was fortunate. I never had to go to court for my company, but several of my peers did have to do so.
All it takes is one term in the contract to spell disaster. I do not expect people like Jack Kirby to be aware of all the minutia of contracts.
