Thread: Silent Sketch.

    Silent Sketch.

Working on a new image of a Silent from Doctor Who. I'd ask for feedback, but you'll forget it the moment you look away.

Very nice linework. One nitpick though...
The heavy shadows over the shoulders indicate the main light source is below and in front of the character, but there's no shading on top of his head to back that up.

You should either drop the shadows, or apply them everywhere the apply.

The thinking there was that the suit is a really dark black, whereas the skin of the head is very pale... but I'll try losing the heavy shadows when I ink it, and see how it works.

    Ah...
Perhaps you should consider som kind of hatching to create the illusion of graytones?

I would... if I didn't completely suck at cross hatching. Trust me, I'd completely ruin it. When I color it, the black at the shoulders wouldn't stand out so much if I choose to keep it.

Fair enough... I really love the work. It's just that the shadow really stood out.
By the way, what are you using to draw it with? Pen? Photoshop? Markers?

I love the linework, but agree with Mash about the shadow.

One thing I really really love is the way you captured the creepiness of the pose. That along with the detail in the face really sells it. Also, The Silent are pretty much the most kickass Who villains of the new run by far... so big props for drawing one. Now you need to do some Weeping Angels.

Photoshop all the way. I don't do so well on paper... because I've gotten so used to being able to flip the image to make sure it's balanced.

Thanks. I may do some Angels next.

    Finished version here.

The jacket collar is flattened by the hard shadow on his shoulders. Break the shadow up a bit when you get to the jacket collar. The collar on his right is pretty close to what I'm talking about but the his left side collar is way flat.
