    New Kid on the Block

    Good day all!

I searched the forum for an introduction thread but came up empty-handed so decided this was as good a place as any to post one. I'm an aspiring comic book writer. I've been a fan of the medium for a number of years but only recently decided to try my hand at writing. I must admit I have no formal education in writing (apart from those creative writing classes way back in school) but I feel like I have some stories to tell and I'm intent on honing my craft. I look forward to interacting with like-minded individuals on this forum. From what I've seen you're an incredibly knowledgeable and friendly bunch!

I've outlined a premise for my first story and will get cracking on the first draft of the script post-haste! No doubt this will be the first place I post it for some much needed constructive criticism.

    Thanks for stopping by, JP.

Welcome to PJ. Can't wait to see your stuff! Do you write the traditional superhero comic book characters or have you jumped on the zombie craze or do you prefer a different approach to comics as a story-telling venue?

If you want the most feedback for your writing, might I suggest the writing contests? A great tool for not only getting feedback and refining your technical skill, but learning to tell a concise story in as few pages as possible and get into the discipline of writing regularly.

    Hope to see you there.

Thanks for the welcome and the suggestion WildAces!

I'll definitely check out the contests. Like you said, I need to get into the habit of writing regularly and actually developing a writing process.

I've noticed my personal tastes have shifted from the superhero type comics to the high concept type that characterize the indy scene. So that will be my focus: writing strong, interesting characters in extraordinary circumstances.

Welcome aboard! I echo the comment about joining the writing competitions, they can be good fun.

I would add that one of the most useful functions of the forum is not just the opportunity to get unbiased feedback on your work but looking critically at other people's scripts. When you're forced to look at a story critically, identify its strengths and weakness and give constructive feedback on how to fix problems you take a short cut in your own development. You learn what not to do and what you can do better. Sometimes its hard to find something bad about a piece (or something good!) but by identifying strengths and weakness in a piece you become more comfortable doing it with your own work. And every opinion is valid, as every reader is a potential consumer.
