My first try at sequential art..these are pretty old

Once again still pretty rough pencils and I see so mistakes I should've fixed.



This last one was an idea I worked on with writer Matt Ashcraft. Sorry for the typo in the 3rd panel. Apparently everyone in the future dresses like surfers while our main character thought dressing like Mad Max was appropriate.

I'll say from the starting block you have a good feel for this type of art...Your first samples caught my eye ....your last samples are OK ( but I'm not really into too cartoony ) That said..I guess I'd like to know your direction....I know you gotta regular job..and all ( like most of us ) so what's gonna be your focus?

Well, that's a tricky question right now. I'm at that point in my life where my love of drawing/inking/coloring comics is out weighing the comfort of having a weekly paycheck. I've spent years (most of my life) reading everything I could about what goes into making comics of almost every type (comic books, graphic novels, comic strips, etc.) I have all the tools and the know how but put it off to the side to join a band about ten years ago. Now that i'm older and playing small shitty bars has lost it's appeal I'm diving right back into my artwork. The problem I'm running into now is that i don't seem to have enough time to devote to drawing the way I want (and need) to. I do a lot of design work on the side (flyers, t-shirts, logo's, etc.) digitally which is cool and all but my focus right now is to see how good I can get at drawing comics.

Just for your Info Ben I'm 52 this month and have been in love with comics since I can remember....I was an accomplished professional oil painter for 28 yrs ( not making a living at it...just selling every now an then..) when all my Kids had grown they encouraged me to go after my comic Dream .... And so That's what I plug away at..
So this is how I've been tackling work and Comics....after 8-9 hours at work..( I'm a Printer by trade in a commercial shop ) I'm usually pretty bushed...( never try a master piece tired ) so in stead I go threw my script and do sketches and get a good feel for what I want to convey on the page....once a solid idea is sketched,it's usually getting close to Friday and my energy level seems to go up....when Saturday hits and there is usually distractions ( take Wife Shopping ect ) I get those done by about 2-O-clock...then On to the drawing board for serious drawing ( I usually draw till about 6:00 ) Then Sunday after Sunday School I draw from 12:30 to about 5:30 ( then start thinking about work and getting in that frame.. ) then the process starts over...if there is unfinished panels I usually can finish them up during the work week with out too much trouble,before starting sketches for the next page....
Hope this gives you some ideas...it's slow but steady and always moving forward

Thanks for all the insight Bryan. Everything you've said about finding time to work out the art is pretty much what I do now. Evenings and weekends. It still doesn't seem like enough though. Tonight my wife and I are going to discuss what it would take for me to go part time so I can devote myself to spending more time polishing my skills. We are by no means "rich" but then again we're not exactly scrapping by either. A few years back my wife tried out being self-employeed with 100% of my support behind her. It went well for a while and then fizzled out. So now It's my turn to chase a dream so to speak. Thanks for taking the time to share you're thoughts.
