That's not a great analogy. McDonald's is simply cheaper and more convenient than say driving(farther) to and waiting 45 minutes at a restaurant to bite into tasty yet pricier porterhouse. Nobody really judges movies to the degree that you'd like to anymore. Avatar just kinda avalanched into something that was beyond being critical about and people really wanted to take part in it. You're right that it's success isn't necessarily directly correlated to it's quality just it's popularity. There have been far more provocative and original films before Avatar, like Crash, Schindler's List and City of God to name a few, but not everybody goes to the theater for those reasons. All you can really say about Avatar's success is that Cameron knows what movie goers want and knows how to cash in on it.

When adjusted for inflation, Gone With the Wind-- considered to be one of the greatest movies ever made-- is the highest grossing movie of all time, with the original Star Wars coming second to that.

Just because a movie makes a lot of money doesn't necessarily mean it's great, but when you're talking about extremely large sums of money that a movie like Avatar, Gone With the Wind, Star Wars, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and others have made, I think that holds some credence when determining the movie's quality... I don't know, though...

    Totally agree with you here.

Btw. This threads' title is "Movies you wish you never saw", not "Worst movies ever".....so yeah there are some people (me included) that think..."Avatar was a waste of my time and money".

Like a movie that's great and worth the money to go see over and over and over and over again?

    Totally agree with you here.

I mean... some people don't like certain food (like, I don't know... tomatoes or something), but that doesn't mean the only reason everyone else likes it is because they have ****ed up taste buds, or... I don't know...
Provide me with valid, logical reasons why something should be liked, and I'll agree with you.

I used to not like tomatoes myself. But people made valid points to me, like they taste better with ranch dressing, I may like them served cold with a veggie platter instead of cooked and on a burger, it's better to start with small bite-sized baby tomatoes, or that my tastes will change as I get older. I took these points to mind, and started eating tomatoes. I like them now.

Now let's take this as opposed to, say... Kim Kardashian is such an important person!
    I will say, "why?"
The common masses will say "CUZ SHE'S FAMOUS!" I respond with "that's ridiculous. There's absolutely nothing that differentiates her from anyone else. She's a stupid attention whore."
Common masses have nothing in response, and instead condemn ME for being the freak. Ergo, I have no value for their opinion.

Yeah...um, the Kim Kardashian parallel in non-existent. She's on an E! reality show, a channel that pretty much everyone I know doesn't even watch. I only watch it for The Soup and occasionally Chelsea Lately.

No one says that Kim Kardashian is important. Now, if she starred in a TV show that had ratings higher than any other show ever, or starred in a movie that made more money than any other movie ever, or released an album that was bought by more people than any other album ever, then maybe you could draw a comparison. However, she has not, thus your analogy is weak.

Well in the case of both Avatar and Kim Kardashian the are both visually pleasing to me. Therefore I like them.

The Batman Forever was a movie I wish I could return to the shop and....get my time back?
There are things, unrelated to movies, which should be liked, but ....that gets very twisted and philosophical.
Recent movie I saw that I would never recommend is Jumper. I saw it on cable at 3:00 AM and finished at 5 A.M and I feel like a moron for missing sleep. The whole movie is about two guys who can boom tube around. Nothing seemed to make sense. Just exotic locations and a white haired Sam L.
