    Complex

    Complex is my new comic written by Michael Malkin. We are releasing our first 64-page collection and will begin our 22-page bi-monthly series in February.

    Any kind of feedback (good or bad, general or specific) is welcome.

    Here are some sample pages. These were interesting to do. One of the challenges was depicting night without inking the sky black every time. I hope the shadows and silhouettes do the job.



    Fellow artists might recognize a variation on one of Wally Wood’s “22 panels that always work”.

    I’m still curious what a colorist would add to the mix...

    Keep the black and white going. I did notice the Wally Wood's tutorial. I think it looks great.

    Actually I grew up reading classic strips as well as comics from Italy and Argentina, so I think in black-and-white. Still, some pages are challenging. Here I had to depict the desert, so I refrained from using solids and hatching. I hope it works!

    Who were your influences? I'm very fond of Argentine and Italian artists too - Breccia, Sergio López, Toppi, Buzzelli, De Luca, Crepax, they're all awesome!

    Oh, I love them all! Also Muñoz, Stano, Milazzo, Pratt, Roi... Perhaps not influences as such, but I did pick up a thing or two from each.

    Your chiaroscuro reminded me a lot of Buzzelli's I Labirinti. Ever read that one?

    I grew up reading a LOTS of Argentina (and Italy of course) comics too and I can see their influences in your work: Risso, Munoz, Trigo, Manara, Giardino, Breccia as you already said.
    I really like the pages you posted and I like all te styles that you used very well there, my fave are te initial 2 pages

    My two cents:
    The page with the woman in the desert: In the opening panel I suggest to use the volture better, maybe putting it bigger in foregrond adding deep to the image. In panel 3 I'd move the woman falling a bit on the right in orer to better create the flow from letf to right while reading panel 2 and 3

    In hindsight, I agree 100% with you, but the comic has been out for some time now. Thanks anyway.

    That last panel of the first POST was a straight up visual treat. I am totally digging the pages. Bookmarked and will pick up a digital copy or two next payday.

    Thanks! You do realize I'm posting the best pages, right? Seriously though, I try to create my art in the service of the story... Michael is the real star of the book.
