Baseball. A whole team of dudes with bats (and who know how to swing them) could do some pretty good damage.

your team is automatically armed. as oppose to baseball where chances are your in the field and only one person has the bat. And the entire team is armed.. offer some armor.

the sticks are made of carbon compose more solid than hockey sticks.

Pfft, amateur! Everyone knows melee weapons are where it's at. No ammo, silent, harder to miss, quicker draw, less moving parts so won't malfunction, and deadlier. I'll take a hatchet or a metal bat any day over projectile weaponary.

Too bad there isn't any sports that involve hatchets (that I know of).

Skeet shooting or marathon running. Being good at either would be most helpful.

Ice Hockey. Walking on ice without skates isn't easy, every player is wearing protective gear, and every player on the ice is armed with a melee weapon.

Field Hockey could be a close second. Players are used to both sprinting and extended running, ever on-field player is armed with a melee weapon - sticks traditionally made of hardened wood designed for repeated impact (modern sticks are also made of fibreglass, kevlar and carbon fibre composites). Only downside is the lack of protective equipment (mouth guards, shin pads, and gloves being the most common gear).

Any sport where the majority of players don't have access on-field to any weapon and protective equipment would be nasty.

I was going to pick Baseball, but then again only one player has a bat in his hand when zombies take to the field (and possibly the players on the bench or warming up). I don't know Baseball well, so correct me if I'm wrong, but I also don't think there's enough bats on the sidelines anyway to equip every player on one or both sides.

    Update

Competition Wood Chopping anyone? This is a competitive sport in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the Basque country. The US has equivalent Lumberjack Championships.

Every competitor on field is physically fit and strong, every on-field competitor is wielding a short or long axe (or a saw which isn't so great), there's plenty of axes off-field, and although not wearing much protective gear, they do wear steel toed boots for safety reasons.

Another drawback is all the swinging axes around you.

There is also Competitive Chainsawing but running out of gas would make that chainsaw fairly useless (and I personally wouldn't stand next to a bunch of people wielding chainsaws like weapons).

I'd like to be doing that olympic biathlon with the cross country skiing and the rifle! You'd be WAY faster than the zombies on the snow... and you'd have a rifle!!!
