Well the only person who could stop bending besides Aang was Ty Lee, and even then that was only temporary. So either Amon is on a whole other spiritual level like Aang is... or he's an incredibly unstoppable balls-crazy martial artist.
Maybe both!
PR. I came to the Avatar game a bit late two.. About a year before the horrible horrible horrible horrible horrible M. Night movie came out. It's definately worth checking out, and you'll dig it after watching a few episodes of the new one just to see what some of the characters you've seen and heard about were like in the series. I have them all on DVD and both my and I constantly rewatch them when there is nothing on TV we want to watch.
I really wish they would make a spinoff show just about Toph.
PTX: Definately not a parlor trick. I don't see any reason for a big time gangster to go along with any kind of parlor trick when he's controlling most of the city. I am interested to see what's going on with that since I'm pretty sure that Aang was the only person ever in history (as far as the shows canon goes) since before bending to take away anyone's power.

He's a chi blocker
Let's Volt In!!!!!

Not really - chi-blockers use pressure point strikes. He was using the same forehead move that Aang used on Firelord Ozai.

I'm digging the anime and production value. Not sure I like the idea that she's in a professional bending league. The fights in the arena seems a bit generic to me.
I'll still watch this though. My son loves it and my wife and I enjoy it as well. My wife thinks that Amon is a descendent of Firelord Ozai. The fact that the Avatar took Ozai's bending away and Amon now uses the same technique to remove a bender's ability to bend. Also interesting is that he has to wear a mask to cover his scarred face which was caused by a firebender. Zuko's face was scarred from Ozai. Could Amon be Ozai's son/nephew and he encountered Zuko and thus resulted in his face getting scarred?

Which brings me back to my original question: Is Amon just like, the greatest chi blocker on the planet, that he can stop bending forever? Or is there some crazy spiritual side to him? The problem with the latter being that the Airbenders were the only ones with that kind of spiritual focus and power (the only possible exception being the Guru that Aang trains with late in season 2)

oooohh.... what if it's Tenzin? his dad tought him the chi blocking, and now he's all like "im gonna clean up this city, and piss on my dad's ashes" thats why he sped off before he could teach Korra airbending, SO SHE WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO STOP HIM!!
later on when she finally confronts him he's gonna be all "ILL TEACH YOU TO WRECK THE WIND TRAINING THINGEY!"
But at the end of the first episode, Tenzin is with Korra at the announcement ceremony... and then you see Amon's lair, where he's there listening to the broadcast live.
