Well, Doc, I lived for 2 years in Germany and still can't do much more than order a beer or ask where the train station is auf Deutsch, but I'll give your challenge a try:

To save anybody time who doesn't want to look at the first google search response above I'll include this relevant bit of information:

The Oxford English Dictionary gives a similar definition but with a later start point "... the period between early adulthood and old age, usually considered as the years from about 45 to 65".

I have several friends who aren't yet 40 who are already grandparents, as their children, all over 18, have now had their own children. That, I believe, is the definition of being a grandparent .

Used to work with a guy who was a few years from sixty and he claimed to be a great-grandparent already.

Clearly, the fine gentleman I have illustrated (yes, I'll admit it took me all of 10 minutes) is less than 60 years of age, and his two adult daughters both have children of their own, hence making him a Grandfather .
