I do in fact like ultimate spider man.

The synopsis? High school loser gets bitten by a powers-granting spider, and becomes a successful jerk, which results in his beloved uncle getting killed. Decides to fight crime and hooks up with a redhead way out of his league. Hi-jinks ensue.

Ultimate Spidey is good because it takes the best elements of 60 years of continuity and condenses it, all while putting it in a more modern setting and connecting it far better with its universe than any normal Spiderman title. For instance, in real life, it took over 30 years for Venom to appear. In Ultimate Spidey? He appears somewhere in the second or third volume. In the old Spidey comics, Spiderman lived in a bubble until a cross-over occurred. In USM, he regularly runs into the X-Men, SHIELD, The Ultimates and others. There's a far greater sense of continuity and world-building in the Ultimate universe, probably because it was 2 or 3 guys hammering the whole thing out before they launched any books as opposed to hundreds of writers over dozens of years.

Neu Peter Parker is also a far more believable protagonist. He has trouble making/maintaining his costume, he has trouble getting out of school to fight super-villains, and being 16 he's a bit of an idiot and i think by this point half the Ultimate Universe knows who he is. (this is even lampshaded when he's saved by the X-Men... he notices his mask has been removed and he moans "Great, can't I go a single day without someone discovering that I'm Peter Parker?!" To which Kitty (Shadowcat) replies "Uhm, we didn't know your real name...." Cue facepalm)

The best though is the dialog. It's believable, it flows well, and is genuinely funny... or saddening, or heart-warming, or whatever else the writer wants you to feel.

It has its bad parts, but the first few volumes are damn good reading.
