View Full Version : Grand Championship - December - Wheel Of Time

I've had this idea for a while, I wanted to choose a topic that doesn't have a lot of visuals associated with it, so people would have to imagine characters and environments without a definite model to work from. Might be a pain in the arse, but I think it would really showcase people's creative abilities. Of course, that means literature, and almost anything I pick will be something many people haven't read. Ah well, its something different so I'm going with it. My topic suggestion is Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time art (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wheel_of_Time). There's a great selection of Darrel Sweet cover paintings online, and the Dabel brothers have even released pages of their up and coming graphic novel, so reference is available. The wikipedia page has plenty of info and descriptions, and the possibilities are insanely numerous (12 books and counting). So, there it is; let me know if this is too awful an idea to work with.

Only 5 entries, a little disappointing, but understandable considering the holidays.
Adam Masterman- my number 2 pick. A really lovely piece.
Fallenangel- my number 3 pick. Great pencil work yet again.
Sacredbob- Not sure what emotion the man who is looking at the snow is trying to convey, is it wonder? It is a lovely illustration however. You really added some great stuff to the competition this year.
Scmarooney- My number 1 choice. The samurai and dragon just can't be denied.
Nice work all, hopefully this isn't the end of the Grand Championship.

I think I may have dampened participation with my arcane topic. Apologies, if I ever choose a topic again, I'll try to think of something more accessible.
FallenAngel:Sweet pencil rendering, as usual. I love how that guy is stabbing the skeleton and using the one power on him (crazy freak!)
McNeil: Cool Fade, and I like your palate. Props for knowing how much wolves hate the Neverborn.
Sacredbob: I sense a fellow WOT junkie. Great choice of moment to illustrate, and well executed.
Scmarooney: Great work. Got my vote with the awesome attention to detail.
Thanks for indulging me, gents. As always, an honor and a pleasure.

aye, the holidays have sucked my schedule dry like a 3rd ex-wife with Johnny Cochran running the devorce. I'm very sorry i couldn't get something together for this. I read like the first half dozen or so WOT books some time ago and always liked the world.
I went with SacredBob for putting out an only WOT scene (far as i can think of neway). GJ to everyone who were obviously better at holiday managment than myself.

The holidays... and the subject. I think a lot of people were just unfamiliar with it.
Nice entries though!
Tough choice between Adam Masterman and Scmarooney for me.

I went with ScMarooney. Great detail and vibrancy.
I was a bit busy this month - and, as suggested, the subject was completely unfamiliar to me.
The Championship has been very entertaining this year - but the arrival of PUMMEL did hit the number of entrants pretty hard.
You reckon it'll take up again in 2010?
Or will the dominance of PUMMEL have killed it off?

I really enjoy the monthly Grand Championship contests. PUMMEL's too much for me; one extra piece a month is about all I can handle. I'd like to see it again next year (and would be happy to post polls, etc. if it's too much on anyone's plate).
For this month, though-
Adam: I really like the POV and the lighting in this one. Yet another really strong image.
FallenAngel: You do the most wonderful things with a pencil. I like the depth of the image and the little details you always add in (The skewered bodies waaaay in the background are a nice touch).
McNiel: I'm a fan of the books, and the connection to the wolves and ability to slip in and out of the "wolf dream" was always one of my favorite abilities (even though Perrin was a whiney douche.) Thanks for giving the wolves some love.
It's also impressive to see that you (I think) completed an entry for EVERY single month. That's dedication, man.
Scmarooney: Damn. Just damn. You got my vote.

All that's required for pummel is one piece a month. Anything you do past that is up to you.
I'm sure the grand championship will continue as long as there are people willing to run it. I hope it sticks around! But I would encourage broader subjects if you want to keep participation high.

Thanks for the nice words to everyone who commented on my drawing this month. I appreciate it.
This was a tough one for me to vote on! I was really torn between Adam's awesome illo and Fallenangel's penciled drawing!
Here's my thoughts on this months entries:
Adam Masterman: Interesting composition and I like the comics style! Makes me want to know what is going to happen next between the evil guy and the POV character! Can't ask for more than that in an illustration!
FallenAngel: Great pencil drawing! I like this pencil drawing so much I voted for this one.
McNiel: nice use of color and good composition!
SacredBob: Cool illustration! I haven't read any of these books, but this definitely "feels" like a scene from a good book.
BTW: Adam and SacredBob someone should hire both of you guys to do a WOT comic!

Hey guys! Not much entries this month but the people who did enter did absolutely great job!
I voted scmarooney, i just loved the details and the colours!
although Adam almost stole my vote with his interesting scene and great use of colours.
Alex.
