ima just go with what I thought was the best surprise this year, at least for me: star trek. Star trek was badass and I never thought I'd describe anything ST as badass.

This is a provisional list, because I haven't seen a great deal of movies yet that were released post september. Also, I saw a buttload of foreign movies, but I didn't list them for obvious reasons.
A good year for movies, I'd say.

Since I've been spending a lot of time reading up on Star Trek Online, let me just say how nice it is to see a group of people admit that ST 2009 was awesome.
As a Trekkie, I hate Trekkies.
I'll do a top 5 since I don't think I could really do a top 10 list justice.

It's not worth it, unless you're a teenager are a fan of the books.

Twilight is written for women/girls. The fact that some nerds go out to watch this because it has "werewolves" and "vampires" is amazing to me.

I don't know if I've even gone to the movies ten times this year, but I'm glad that so many people are putting Moon in their list. That movie was freaking great, but nobody saw it! So I'm going to try to make a list, I guess?
1. Up
2. Avatar
3. District 9
4. Zombieland
5. Star Trek
6. Ponyo
7. Moon
8. Evangelion 1.0. Even though it's a nearly scene for scene rehash of the series, I just can't get enough Eva.
9.
??? Uh... I'm not putting Transformers or GI Joe or Inglorious Basterds anywhere on my top ten list, so I guess I'll leave it at that.

Twilight is written for women/girls.
Not this one. :x
I can kinda see the appeal to an obscenely uncritical reader (the "mature boyfriend" fantasy) but man I tried to read it and it's just terrible. The first movie is actually almost up to par for a Canadian TV movie, because they had the sense to cut out the bad prose and most of the blatant offensiveness. It's still insanely awkward and illogical.
Anyway yeah I think Star Trek is my favourite this year.
District 9 is a close second; Star Trek was more fun but maaan.
Coraline was great.
Watchmen was a fine adaptation; I actually wish they'd pushed it further from the book and I still want to see the Black Freighter thing.
Monsters vs. Aliens was a fine kids' movie but not my thing.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine wasn't as bad as all that but it wasn't good. Except for the 2 minutes with Deadpool talking and killing people at the beginning.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was the same as all the other Harry Potter movies, except based on The Half Blood Prince. So.
And that's all I saw for new movies. I can't even fill out a top 10 counting ones I didn't like. Oh and Torchwood: Children of Earth was just amazing and I don't care it wasn't a movie. It was great!

You guys watch alot of new movies. I think I only went to the movies twice this year. The Hangover was the only one worth mentioning of the two. I've just been watching whatever is avalible on Netflicks Watch Instantly and my regular queue is filled with slightly new movies and older ones I never got around to seeing before. So I've seen a ton of movies this year but not much that came out in 09. lol

OK, this list is actually all the 2009 movies I've seen this year listed in order of preference:
#10: Fast and Furious
BLAH. Why did I even go to this? I should have known better.
#9: I Love You, Man
This movie wasn't really all that funny, but Lou Ferrigno was in it and that counts for a lot.
#8: The Princess And The Frog
It's nice to see some 2D animation again, but apart from a kickass villain it's forgettable.
#7: The Hangover
Straight-up hilarious, but I'm enough of a square that I probably won't watch it again.
#6: Sherlock Holmes
This movie kicked all kinds of Victorian ass, but it had a few dull moments and some needless revisions of the source material.
#5: Black Dynamite
Quote of the year: "Your knowledge of scientific and biological transmogrification is outmatched only by your zest for KUNG FU TREACHERY!"
#4: Star Trek
Aww yeah.
#3: District 9
Aww hells yeah.
#2: Zombieland
AWW HELLS YEAH MOTHER****ER
#1: Up
Up is easily my favorite Pixar film. An exceptional story even by their high standards, it grabbed me from the first shot of Carl in the theater and didn't let go until the old man and the boy were sitting on the curb, counting cars.
Each twist and turn of the story surprised me, transitioning effortlessly from childhood innocence, to deep romance and loss, to heartbreak and loneliness. On the first pass, Russell, Kevin and the dogs seemed like shallow, one-trick comic relief characters thrown in to keep kids' eyes on the screen, but they each serve a crucial purpose in the story.
The crux of the story (as I saw it) is premised upon the idea of being faithful to your word.
The dual stories of Charles Muntz and Carl Fredricksen demonstrate the truth that keeping your word for the sake of your pride will result in obsession and madness, poisoning those closest to you. On the other hand, keeping a promise at the expense of your own desires, embracing responsibility and even giving up your dream for the right reasons is what's truly satisfying.
Up is a fantastic tale that really struck a chord with me, and the highest compliment I can give is this: It's exactly the kind of story I dream of being able to tell.

The only part that is off for me in UP is the dogs flying planes. I was COMPLETELY on board for the entire rest of the flick, but that part really sucked me out. Granted, that's only a moment in the film, but compared to the rest which I hold at such high regard, it really stood out. The rest seemed semi-plausable, just not the airplane flying dogs.
I think I've read Inkthinker echoing the same sentiment.
