I read Ultimate Avengers and it was so good I had to read it again. Finally Mark Millar comes back to clean up Jeph Loeb's mess and does an issue with some great action and cool last page reveal. Carlos Pacheco lives up to the "A-List Artist" title Millar gave him a few months back. It reminds me of Hitch's stuff with a lot less hatch lines and shading details. The helicopter sequence was done beautifully on both Millar and Pacheco's parts. The story is a quick read since the only areas with lots of dialogue are the scenes with Hawkeye and Nick Fury. Cap busts out a cool one-liner in his entrance. Although the story only takes place a few weeks after Ultimatum, Millar does a good job reviving what Jeph Loeb has sullied in the opening pages. Pacheco tries too much to copy Hitch in the opening page and final page with the close-up shots of the characters in an emotional state with their one sentence of dialogue. This book with definetely be on my pull list.
I didn't buy Ultimate Spider-Man since I'm waiting on how the book is received before I get it. I would love to hear about it.

I thought they were both fantastic starts for the new series. Both kicked things off excellently, although I could have done with less length to that helicopter fight. And yes, Pacheco has managed to take up Hitch's mantle without too much of a hiccup. Though Joe Mad and Dave Finch's stints, and the subsequent costume designs, allow enough distance to not constantly compare to Hitch.
Spider-Man was absolutely fantastic and does 2 really great things to **** with the status quo and announce that this is, indeed, a fresh start. In a way that is vastly more interesting and well played out than in the laundry list of scenery-chewing deaths that was Ultimatum. Lafuente as the main artist is going to take some getting used to. I think he's a terrific artist but its a "cuter" style than I'm used to seeing on USM.

His bobble-headed Spider-Man on the cover was one of the reasons I wanted to steer away from the book but after reading what you said, and other reviews online, I think I might end up picking it up.

millar's one liners are overly sarcastic and goofy, just like loebs. i love em both.
pacheco cant draw the hawkeye costume right to save his life, so he gets rid of the mask? lame.
ultimate spidey is fun though i love lafuentes stlye.
Hawkeye's redesign by Mad, while cool looking just tears down the
type of character that Hitch portrayed him as. He had a receding
hairline but Mad chose to give him a head full of hair. Idk, when he
escaped from torture and certain death using his fingernails near the
end of Ultimates v2 he turned into a darker character. Moreso when
he killed Black Widow. Then it's like they rebooted him to normal
Marvel Universe Clint Barton in Ultimates v3. Identity crisis? Meh.
I do like the concepts that I hear Millar is introducing. A Mrs. Fury
sounds great. Don't know about her being called 'Black Widow' though.
After they reveal Red Skull as Cap's kid in the end on the first
issue it did feel soap opera-ish. Issue 2 sets it up nicely though.
I like the angle of the US not being able to replicate the super
soldier serum and when they do it creates characters like the
Hulk and Red Skull.
The Red Skull transformation is a great idea too. You'll just have to
read it. Overall, the issue seemed too short. In terms of art I do
prefer Carlos Pacheco of old. His run on Avengers Forever and
Fantastic Four suited his dynamic figure work. Still, his work is
solid. It may not be Hitch but then again who is? Personally I think
Trevor Hairsine (sp) could work.
It's a fun read and makes me appreciate the Ultimates Captain
America even more.

.
what are you talking about? he acted nothing like 616 hawkeye.
Oh, yeh, are you talking about how Hawkeye as Ronin or some crap?
I'm talking of the previous version of him wearing the purple get up.
I guess I'm wrong about his core character because he's not
really consistent other than acting on inpulse and being hot tempered.
Whatever.

NOD: Nah. It's the same ultimate continuity, they just made a small time skip.
and I have yet to read issue 2, but I'm glad hawkeye ditched that stupid mask. Mad's redesigns for ultimates 3 sucked hard. Totally ignored the mood Hitch set up. He was too busy playing video games to actually pay attention to what the characters are.

i liked it too, but he took someone elses thing and like compleatly changed it. Somethings i liked, some i didnt, like thors hammer changing, i loved the half hammer half axe metal thing. but then he made it the common stone one and took away the specialness of it. as a story, loved it, part of the ultimate line....ehhhhhh...
