This story has too many Snakes.
That, um. Might be my fault. I was the one who decided the first Snake was actually Luigi in disguise. Then I also decided that Batman was the real Snake in disguise. After that I can't claim responsibility for the confusion, though, since the real real Snake was introduced into the story, meaning I had to make Batman-Snake actually the Joker in disguise.
The three Snakes is but one of many things in the Strip Jam that makes zero sense.

Are you kidding? There aren't enough snakes!tic

Just then Donkey Kong appeared and tried to eat Kobun, but The Major impaled DK's brain with The Biggest Banana in the Universe. Sam, holding the briefcase, slipped on the banana peel and the case went flying
Only thing I see so far is that it seems like this passage is saying Sam slipped on the peel of the Biggest Banana in the Universe, when I think he slipped on the dead peel of Kobun after DK squished him... DK still has the Biggest Banana in the Universe lodged into his skull I believe.

Hey Scott,
Here is basically my take on your summary.
I kind of rewrote and reworded the whole thing, more for clarity's sake than doing it in the voice of the Penny Arcade guy.
If anything I hope it clarifies a lot of stuff.
Let me know what you think!
When last we checked in, Joker Snake had successfully followed Obama's orders to capture Lauren and tie up any loose ends associated with the Solid Snake identity debacle and the M.O.F.L. briefcase. Double-crossed by Obama after completing his mission, Joker Snake was trying his best to resist the false memory implants being administered by Skee-Lo.
Before Skee-Lo could complete the retconning procedure, he and Obama were blinded by a bright light in the room! A space portal had been opened by Joker Snake's a rescue party- The Major and his trusty assistant Kobun! Working for what is believed to be the same organization Lauren works for, they enlisted Joker Snake in their quest to obtain the M.O.F.L. briefcase and use it for their own fight against the shady organization that Obama and Skee-Lo work for!
They raced up the Rainbow Road towards Asgard in their mario-kart with Obama and Skee-Lo in hot pursuit. But Joker Snake landed a direct hit on their kart with a red shell, sending the President and his short rapper over the edge into space!
Meanwhile in Asgard, the recently-deceased-and-ascended W-Force had just captured and chained up Yoshi, Tycho and me. Apparently, even in death they were able to continue following the President's orders to apprehend us and the M.O.F.L. briefcase!
Joker Snake, The Major and Kobun arrived in Asgard to find W-Force ready and waiting for them. Then in an unexpected twist, the deceased Sam, his son Sammy, Luigi and Buff Toadsworth arrived, turning the conflict into a three-way Mexican standoff! Odin, starved for entertainment, sat in his big comfy cloud chair and watched the whole thing from above, letting the conflict play out to his amusement.
With everyone momentarily distracted, Kobun made his way over to the M.O.F.L. briefcase and cracked it open, much to the horror of his friends! Sam snatched the case away from Kobun, but it was too late. Whatever was in that case had an unexpected effect on Kobun, and he morphed into the creature "Bananigans," a 50 foot tall, hammer-handed banana-man!
But before Bananigans had a chance to run rampant around Asgard, a hungry, giant-sized Donkey Kong grabbed hold of him and began to squeeze. The Major warned DK not to do anything brash or foolish, prompting DK to tighten his grip, turning Bananigans innards into pulp. Enraged, The Major killed Donkey Kong by impaling DK's brain with The Biggest Banana in the Universe.
The Major then demanded that Sam hand over the M.O.F.L. briefcase, unless he wished to suffer the same fate as Donkey Kong. As Sam cooperatively moved toward The Major to surrender the briefcase he slipped on Kobun's banana-corpse, knocking W-Force over the side of Asgard while hurling the briefcase high into the air and into the hands of LAUREN, the very same woman who had demanded the money in the briefcase from Sammy all the way back at the beginning of this ridiculous story! She was last seen with a bloody lip, stopping Mario from murdering who he thought was Solid Snake (how many Snakes are in this story anyway?), but who was actually Mario's brother AND Lauren's lover, LUIGI. *GASP!*
Sometime after being captured by Joker Snake, turned over to Obama, and hardened by prison life in Cell Block D, Lauren acquired some prison guard pants and accessories and escaped from prison, then made a beeline to Asgard to put an end to the testosterone-fueled, pompous sausage-fest, AND get her mo'erfuggin' money.
But alas, before Lauren could enjoy the fruits of her labor, MF DOOM appeared, a powerful HipHop Mage in cahoots with the President and Skee-Lo, who had been rescued and were now in tow.
MF Doom threatened to reveal Lauren's true identity if she didn't hand over the case. When she threatened him further, MF Doom summoned his army of Doom-Bots™ revealing the President Obama to really be a RObama. MF Doom then unleashed a powerful "Thriller Attack" which forced everyone, no longer in control of their own bodies, to do the Thriller dance originally performed by Michael Jackson.
Word instantaneously got back to Michael Jackson that his song and dance moves were being used without paying him royalties. MJ immediately hopped on a Red Rocket Bomb and dropped it high in space over Asgard and all of us! He thought he was being accompanied by his chimpanzee Bubbles, but it turned out to be the devious, mysterious Star King(!), who, in an unexpected power play, pulled an "old, dirty, Bakalite Trick" (whatever that is) on MJ, and everyone far below.
Meanwhile, MF Doom's control over everyone ended as quickly as it started when Lauren, in the throes of the Thriller Attack, dropped her gun to the ground, causing it to misfire into MF Doom's skull, killing him.
The Major began to deduce that all their opponents were black and/or robots, coming to the conclusion that everything points to a Black Robot Conspiracy! As he, Lauren and Joker Snake pondered this "revelation," Sam and Sammy took advantage of this small window of opportunity by grabbing the M.O.F.L. briefcase and high-tailing it down the Rainbow Road with Yoshi. They almost immediately got held up on the Rainbow Road by Sam who, being a drug-addict, fell into an immoveable stupor brought on by the idea of the large quantity of drugs he could buy with his son's money that he assumed was still in the briefcase.
Just then, W-Force ascended in a hot-air balloon touting a First-Place Shell (from Mario Kart).
Simultaneously, The Major and Joker Snake made their way towards Sam, Sammy and Yoshi to reclaim the briefcase.
A "?" Mark box in front of Sam, Sammy and Yoshi began to smolder.
W-Force unleashed a Kung-Fu Chicken Chop attack.
The Major and Joker Snake closed in.
Then?
BLAMMO.
Michael Jackson's Red Rocket Bomb WENT OFF all over everyone, annihilating Asgard and everything in it in a giant Michael Jackson Mushroom Cloud. The horror...
Cut to 25 million years later!
In deepest space, the briefcase is spotted by Jedi Master Yoda and R2-D2 in an X-Wing. They retrieve the briefcase and bring it to their home, The Hatch, on an undisclosed planet.
Yoda opens the briefcase. To everyone's surprise, there is no money in the briefcase. Instead, the box is empty except for a row of five boxes on the inner lid with cryptic hieroglyphs in each one! Oh yeah, also in the briefcase were the trapped and disembodied souls of Sam, Sammy, Yoshi, Joker Snake, and The Major.
Before Yoda could make heads or tails of what he was looking at, the zombie corpse of The Major basically materialized behind him. After the destruction of Asgard, The Major roamed the universe as a soulless, flesh-eating monster, his corpse now a home for a colony of powerful intergalactic Space Bees that flew in and out of his eye socket. It turns out that almost everyone caught in the Asgard tragedy had become soulless zombies, sent to hungrily wander the cosmos for the next 25 million years.
The Major swallowed his soul and became human again. His mind and body fused with the hive-mind of the Space Bee colony inside him, granting him a new skill set of Space Bee powers. So cool!
The Major, having gained his compassionate human faculties once more, began strategizing a game plan to reunite the four souls in the briefcase with their respective zombie bodies, travel back in time 25 million years, stop the destruction of Asgard, and exact his revenge on those responsible. He asked Yoda for a favor and that favor was to die. Then The Major killed Yoda with a Dragonball attack. Old habits die hard, I guess.
Meanwhile, across the galaxy, it turned out that the person who pulled the strings of everyone in order to build an intergalactic empire from the ashes of Asgard was none other than the dastardly Star King(!), last seen riding the Red Rocket Bomb with Michael Jackson. Ruling from his thrown inside his formidable Star Fortress, The Star King is backed by his terrifying Zombie Army, and has the zombie remains of Sam and MJ working directly underneath him in the Throne Room.
Deep in the bowels of the Star Fortress are the prison cells that housed the notorious criminals Vegeta and the King Koopa Bowser. They were both locked up together in one cell. Vegeta was the only one chained to the wall. They had begun to starve, having already eaten all the Shy Guys that were originally locked up with them, save for Shy Guy Mel, who was now all alone...
That's all I was able to write out before work ended.
That reads really well Wild and Uncouth. Nice work to borh you and Scott for the summarization.

Ok, I finished my rendition. It's now completely caught up to the latest panel. A LOT has happened in the past, almost-80 panels...

Back at The Hatch, The Major had used R2D2 as a toilet and then changed into some clean clothes he had found, going for a risky "jacket-with-no-shirt" kind of look. He slipped the still-mysterious M.O.F.L. briefcase into his satchel for safe-keeping, and put his colleagues souls' into test tubes around his waste for easy access were he to happen across any of their zombie corpses.
As The Major was about to head out the door on his journey, he got an incoming call from The Hatch's communication station. A shadowy figure had called explicitly for The Major(!) to tell him about Zombie Michael Jackson's head's time machine that was located in the lower levels of the dreaded Star Fortress.
This is where things really began spiraling out of control.
The Major used his Space Bees to create a Space BeeHive transport and rushed to The Star Fortress. Unbeknownst to him, Han Solo had been waiting for him in the hallway outside the docking bay he was landing at.
Han was from the future and had used "Red Matter" to create a wormhole to travel back in time to kill The Major, whom he calls "Darth Major," thereby undoing the future death of his wife, Leia, at The (supposed) Major's hands. But while The Major was docking, Han got a surprise of his own.
Han had a bounty on his head, and was being pursued across space and time by Samus Aran, who, upon confronting Han, referred to him as a "space pirate." Maurice, a man Samus believed she had killed (and who was a dead ringer for Spike Spiegel), showed up to correct her improper nomenclature, citing that "Space Cowboy" is the proper terminology. Han Solo then zorped Maurice in the chest, making damn sure that in all the confusion one thing was certain- he always shot first.
Meanwhile, in the Throne Room of the Star Fortress, the Star King was having his own troubles. While the King was relishing his intergalactic rule, who should appear but the infamous, mysterious and most confoundedly, IMPARTIAL "Wutangurai," the Wutang Samurai, who immediately fatally hacked down the Star King with a mighty FWOOSH of his sword.
The disembodied zombie head of Michael Jackson was beside himself with grief. But the Star King had seriously considered that all this might happen and had made a contingency plan beforehand, revealing that he had hidden a little version of himself inside of... HIMSELF. He emerged unscathed, but now lacked the requisite power levels to maintain control of his zombie army, which began to run "Amuck."
Back at Docking Bay C, The Major had just landed when he heard the ZORP! in the hallway. There he discovered Han and Samus bickering while standing over the fresh corpse of Maurice.
Han immediately confronted The Major about his future crimes against the universe and the murdering of his wife. The Major did not recall doing any of this, citing the 25 million years he spent as a zombie as a possible reason why. He told Han he had never heard of Leia, but since their goals of going back in time to undo the past and get revenge were one and the same, The Major invited Han on his mission to find the time machine. Samus, apparently bored with it all, resigned to going to the Star Fortress' cafeteria to get a cup of coffee. While this was going on, Bowser and Shy Guy Mel discovered the cell door was unlocked and wandered out, leaving Vegeta chained to the wall.
Almost immediately after calming down Han, The Major turned around and walked right into another fiasco. He spotted the zombie corpse of Sam and decided to attempt reuniting Sam's soul with his body. But before he could implement his plan who should show up again but Lauren, and this timeshe had even MORE abandonment issues, dragging a battered Samus behind her by the hair and wielding a lightsaber. Women.
Lauren informed The Major that she barely survived the destruction of Asgard. her soul was not separated from her body like the his and the others, probably due to her distance from the M.O.F.L. briefcase when the bomb detonated. She was found by the Empire and was restored by Sith technology.
Years later, Lauren crossed paths with Han, who had traveled back to her time in search of The Major before he recalculated and time traveled forward to where they were presently. Lauren noticed Samus was trying to collect a bounty on Han and was in pursuit, so Lauren stowed away on Samus' ship, and everyone was brought to Star Fortress in the present day. WHEW!
Around this time Vegeta triumphantly freed himself from his pesky chains! He had big plans! But alas, Wutangurai showed up and did his thing, slicing Vegeta in two.
The Wutangurai then went for the triple crown and attempted to strike down The Major, who was able to dodge the fatal blow but instead lost his left arm. Once again the Wutangurai spirited away, impartial to the events around him.
Lauren mocked The Major, citing that he basically deserved the mutilation for abandoning her. Women.
Han Solo grew impatient and decided he just wanted to kill The Major again, seeing as his plan seemed simpler than The Major's, who kept getting held up by EVERYTHING. He challenged The Major to a duel.
Lauren then attempted to assist The Major by taking the rocket armor off of Samus' RIGHT arm and attaching it to The Major's LEFT arm. WOMEN.
Meanwhile, 25 million years in the past and mere minutes away from the dropping of the bomb, Luigi cowered behind a cloud after seeing Lauren arrive. He loves Lauren, but had developed an inferiority complex brought on after his death coupled by self-loathing for his fear of competing against The Major's natural suaveness over Lauren's affections.
While Luigi was caught up in his own thoughts his deceased brother Mario showed up wearing the Tanooki Suit he died in and riding on the zombie corpse of Yoshi. Mario explained that after he died at the hands of Thor-Snake and Joker-as-Batman-Snake, he ascended to Asgard and found himself riding forward through time on the leg of an ancient Norse heavy metal god. He wound up in the "bad future" that is the 25-million-years-from-now present, where the Star King controls everything.
Mario tells Luigi that he discovered in the future that The Major finally reunited with his soul. Mario then was the one who contacted The Major and informed him of the whereabouts of the time machine in the Star Fortress. Mario then jumped onto future Yoshi's zombie corpse and traveled back in time to Asgard, where he will wait to rendezvous with The Major. Mario is certain they can change the future, but needs The Major's help to do it. Mario hands Luigi a frog suit to wear while they wait.
25 million years in the future things are getting perplexing. Vegeta is seen walking around unscathed and enters a bathroom/time machine for men.
The Major and Han are dueling and were in the middle of their paces when all of a sudden The Major decides that too much crazy stuff happens when he stands still. His Space Bees had finished assembling a new arm for him, so The Major chucked the Rocket Arm at Han's head and ran away in the general direction of the time machine, ditching Lauren, who then gave chase.
Around the corner Shy Guy Mel had stabbed the Wutangurai through the head with a chef's knife, multiple times hopefully, effectively ending the ronin's killing spree.
The Major runs right by Shy Guy Mel and around the corner, only to cross paths with a flame-spitting Bowser! Caught between Mel and Bower, The Major jumped over Bowser's flames and onto his head, causing Bowser to torch Mel. But that move did to Bowser was cure his heartburn. Bowser then counter-attacked The Major with a "Bowser Ryuken" uppercut.
Meanwhile, Han Solo, having lost The Major's trail, took a wrong turn and stumbled across a Xenomorph egg that was just hatching a Facehugger emerging from inside...

Holy crap. My only concern is how wordy it is. Also I don't want it to be a complete and total recap of every little thing that happened in the story, but more of a "here's the general gist" thing that cuts out the stuff that doesn't make any sense or that we can do without. My plan with the first recap was to simplify the story enough that, not only would new people be able to follow it and add onto the story, but use it as a way to cut out the BS that didn't make any sense and figure out what was "canon" and what we could lose.
I can go through that and edit some chunks out, though. Thanks for your help, Karl.

Totally, Scott!
The point of my write-up was just to address EVERYTHING pretty-much matter-of-factly; to just take everything in and explain it as plainly as possible (with a little humorous flares here and there).
A LOT of stuff has happened in these almost 80 panels, WAY more than I remember happening in the first 80 panels. The crazy really got cranked up a notch.
Nowhere near everything I put down is relevant to the overall story arc.
As soon as I read back over the entire entry I knew that a good 1/4 of this could be cut out for simplicity's sake. (For instance, the summary doesn't need to go into detail about The Major taking a dump and changing his clothes).
I look forward to the simplified recap.

Oh man, I didn't notice that. That was one concern I had starting out the Strip Jam, because if you look at the Draw My Character thread, it goes back four or five years (the old thread, anyway), and a lot of the older posts are missing artwork.
But, y'know, we've still got the recaps and maybe I'll PM Morgan and ask if he can put the panel back up or at the very least email it to me so I can host it.

I noticed a typo in it though: "disappeared" is misspelled. You don't have to change it but you could if you wanted.

I've already noticed a couple typos in peoples' placheholder roughs as well as their finished art.
I've been letting them slide, leaving the responsibility up to the individual artists.
Should we start cracking down on this?
Because if so, just ask Schock about me. I am ridiculously good at spellchecking peoples' stuff. I CAN'T NOT notice when people mispell things, or mistake "your" for "you're," etc.
I just didn't want to nitpick. Everyone should have spellcheck.

I know, but this stuff happens. I remember one time when someone didn't PM me within 24 hours so I skipped him, then he got mad at me and said "hey why'd you skip me!?!" So I told him if the next person dropped out, I'd undelete his post and let him go ahead. The next person dropped out, so I kept my promise. He let his 48 hours run down and didn't post anything. No, there's no penalty for letting your time run up in the thumbnail stage, because it doesn't mess anyone else up. Missing your deadline in the finished stage messes up other people, and thus should carry severe penalties.

That's right. Or two placeholders if you're not working on a page. To be honest, I can see how other projects might cut into time you could spend working on the strip jam or Anchorbird, but the thumbnails (at least for me) take no time at all. I took my sketchbook into the bathroom with me and drew my last thumbnail sitting on the can. They're pretty easy to do, so I don't know why someone would let their time run down unless they absolutely couldn't think of anything to do.

Sorry about my Anchorbird panel fellas. I narrowed it down to 3 different scenarios that could branch off of the encounter with Josie, but nothing seemed to fit right. Plus I was having a blah day. I'll try to realize this ahead of time next time and just give up the spot if I draw a blank.
I like the idea of correcting grammar mistakes. I'd like to think that I have decent grammar, but I guess it's always better to have someone else proofread your dialogue just in case. I'll keep an eye out from now on.

And for the record, I don't care if people correct their spelling mistakes or not. I am in no way a stickler for spelling and I don't want control over anyone's dialogue in any one of their panels.
At the end of the day, it's your work going up, and if you want to risk distracting your audience with poor spelling, then feel free.
Spell-checking is basic editing stuff. We would be irresponsible if we didn't do it on an organized project like Anchorbird.

About the Major… Major Grubert was created by Jean Giraud, a.k.a. Moebius, a.k.a. Gir in the 70’s for Metal Hurlant magazine. The major is an immortal of sorts who has a spaceship called the Ciguri which monitors several self enclosed man made universes called airtight garages. The story takes place in the airtight garage of Jerry Cornelius. Another eternal of sorts. In later printings Moebius changed the Jerry’s name to Lewis Carnelian to avoid any legal problems with Michael Moorcock, author of the Jerry Cornelius Chronicles. Personally I think Michael was too busy enjoying the rock and roll lifestyle to ever be litigious.
But about the major…The reason I brought him into the story is the way the story was written by Moebius. He would publish two to six pages per month giving the story a serial disjointed feel. At times when the issue of Heavy Metal came out I would look at the previous issue and not see any correlation at all. Stream of conscience is like that, characters and side stories would be introduced and never heard from again. The Major seemed to be a perfect fit.
I read these stories collected in one volume years later, made even lest sense. To go from level to level of a reality a person needs a key to unlock the next level. If a key is not used realities will collapse and the Bakalites succeed in sending everything into a chaotic void.
The Bakalites fear only the Nagual, who from what I can fathom are formless entities of order. Or I could be wrong about the whole thing. If you have never read Moebius I urge you to find these stories and come to your own conclusions. Oh and the major also appears in a different story as a mysterious shadowy figure known only as Master Burg.
Stands to reason someone who writes with so many pseudonyms gives his characters different names.

Wait, what? To what is this referring?
The whole letter is a private message to me from Godwin.
What he is blaming you for is the error in the second dialogue balloon-
2. Marty - I think with your lack of memory, the city views you as a threat.
You will have to pass the ritual of Laddwch Mwytawr.to gain it’s trust."
I had made a notation saying that it should read as its, and that there doesn't need to be that period after Mwytawr. I also made a notation about Elsa's exclamation
3. Elsa - A sentry bird DOWN HERE!
Noting that the way it reads right now would imply that she has seen a sentry bird down where she is, when in fact it should read
3. Elsa - A sentry bird! DOWN HERE!
Where the first sentence is her exclaiming to Anchorbird and Marty, and the second sentence is directed at the sentry bird to get its attention.
Godwin told me that there was no mistake except for the its, and that it was yours, back when you edited his post.
I told Godwin that I am only working with what's available, and to please keep note of it. Besides, there were two more mistakes.
He then sent me that pm.
I don't know what his problem is.

W&U, you are a grammar ninja. Its awesome.
Also, its nice to finally know what 'Bakalite' means. When the word first appeared, I thought it had some thing to do with Ol' Dirty Bastard because Godwin captioned his panel 'Its an old dirty Bakalite trick.' That's why I originally thought the Star King was Ol' Dirty Bastard in a star costume.

I forgot that the dialogue had been changed on Turtle Boats' page, replaced with the comment about his destructive power, and the drawing to accompany it.
Now that's destructive!
AND ABOUT THE STRIPJAM
I wish people would let the characters pick a side already.
Lauren's allegiance has flip-flopped LITERALLY every other panel. I personally feel she would be more interesting if she was an antagonist of THe Major, seeing as how he's trying to GO BACK IN TIME STILL to save the (slightly) more innocent version of her.
I'm glad the Bowser fight has ended. It was a good little fight, and I am happy it didn't drag on into utter-retard territory. (and yes, I know I may be speaking too soon)
One thing that has really bothered me is that NO ONE, not one person, has taken advantage of the fact that there are supposed to be ZOMBIE HORDES running amok all over the ship. WHAT THE F--K GIVES?

I've noticed that sometimes people involved in the strip jam or Anchorbird will read a PM right away (because I use read receipts to know exactly when someone reads one of my PMs), and then wait until their 24 hours is almost up to reply. At first I thought this was because they were deciding whether or not they had time to do it, but the thought occurs to me that people think they have 24 hours from the time they reply to finish their panel, and thus wait as long as possible to reply in order to give themselves more time to finish their panel. This is not true.
You have 24 hours to reply, and then another 24 hours after that to finish your panel. Meaning, no matter when you reply to my PM, you have exactly 48 hours from the time I sent it to draw your panel. Even if you reply five minutes after I sent my PM, it's 48 hours.
Thank you.

I was riffing on Marty's outfit for the guards, adding some more military features. Kinda a Roman/tribal/Buck Rogers kinda thing. :) For color scheme I was thinking whites/khaki and maybe gold for the helmet and epaulets.
For the rocket car/airship/limo thing I was thinking gold and silver metallics, with that bitchin' van bubble window a deep blue. I'm open to suggestions.

I'm bored at work so I took all the 1/2 pages posted so far and photoshopped all them into full pages, ostensibly creating the first 5 pages of the comic.
It looks... good. It looks really cool. I can't wait to have enough to actually print one out to hold it.
Scott and Sean's page is a GREAT first page. The palettes are the same from each of them, and it looks really uniform and solid. I didn't put a page next to it because it's page 1, of course. So it stands out to me. Especially with Sean's Kryder at the botom!
Pages 2-5 all look really good too- I especially like how the double-solar eclipse panel ends page 3, and then the reveal of the Moon Tyrant is after you would turn the page- Page 4.
Good stuff!
The colors really make a difference too.

I just went over to the fusion jam to see what you were talking about and all i have to say is- Thank you Scott, for being so goddamn organized. I've been spoiled by only posting in threads created by Scott Ewen.
Having one topic be for placeholders and finished art, and another topic for discussion is SO MUCH EASIER to navigate than that Superman/Goku thread.
Oh, and yes. I think not worrying about such a silly thing like a script helps out our page count tremendously.

I was thinking today... do you guys think eventually Anchorbird will have an ending, and if it does, how should we handle it? I mean, the Strip Jam has "Never-Ending" right in the title, and it's meant to just keep going forever (or until I lose interest and no one else wants to pick up the reins). But with Anchorbird, there's a mystery set up in the first few pages. It seems like we have to have an answer at some point to what happened to Anchorbird to put him where he is, and he has to get home eventually, but it could take months or years before we get him there.
Should we just let the story go where it goes or actually brainstorm an ending and try to steer it in that direction?
I know it's way too early to start planning out an ending, but just something to think about.
caseycp
06-16-2009, 04:48 PM
I like the idea of letting the story flow as it will, and then retroactively deeming "chapters" when it seems a story-arc as come to a logical conclusion. When we have enough chapters under our belt, then we could all sort of steer toward a conclusion.
...but then we could always start a new chapter/spin-off if we want to!
Wild&Uncouth
06-16-2009, 04:49 PM
I say we just let it be.
Having people writing whatever they want every half page does not lend itself to satisfactorily ending ANYTHING.
I think a discussion of an ending will come about when everyone seems to be done with the project. When the majority of the contributors get tired of it, THAT is when a discussion should be had about bringing things to a close.
We'll list all the plot threads that need wrapping up. And then maybe pick an order in which they should be wrapped up. Then keep it as loose as possible as people address each one while NOT introducing new mysteries.

and i must say, this story line, as cryptic and random as it is, is really getting under my skin. I really want to find out what happens in each succeeding page (and I'm even part of the process).

06-16-2009, 05:32 PM
Yeah, I say let the story runs it's course. Worry about making new and interesting story elements at this point instead of how it will all work out. We have a pretty good stable of contributors so way out randomness and non-sequitor plots that would hamper good story flow should be sparse if they happen at all. I'm sure the story will come to a logical conclusion when it feels right.

Hey Scott, Did you get the email, with my 200dpi anchorbird strip? On the topic of the Anchorbird Strip ending --- Why end it(in the distant future) may not be "Never-ending" but, if a storyline ends you can release the book if that what you want to do. Thinking of the end, so close to the begining is not the greatest idea. I'd say run with it as long as it allows, then if nobody want to work on it(in like 20 years) then come up with an ending. Until Then.............Anchor's away!!!!!!!!

Has anyone noticed how in the StripJam, Lauren and Sam have been standing around with The Major in Sam's arms for THREE PANELS NOW?
For three panels they've just stood there. Sure, things have "happened." Sam is back. Lauren is on The Major's side again? Sam apparently thinks he's been plotting something devious (clearly he's lost it). Sam also apparently doesn't know what year it was when Asgard blew up and he died. His brain is so fried from drugs. ANy second now I'm sure he'll freak out, thinking his hands are melting again. Oh yes, and FINALLY some zombies, way off in the distance.
I guess that's fine. I hope The Major doesn't go back in time yet. The whole Star Fortress adventure seems like it's been a big waste, and I still have hopes it will redeem itself. I don't think going back in time has been properly set up either. I'm afraid it will be boring going back in time and rehashing Asgard again. I think I can speak for Spidey and myself when I say that I don't want to draw rainbow roads again just yet.
Maybe it'll all get turned around in panel 60...

don't you get it? Sam isn't really sam. He's ABE LINCOLN! On steroids! how come everybody seems to have forgotten that? of course he was planning this all along, it's so simple. And they're not trying to go back in time to asgard, they're tryna go back to 1865 to prevent Lincoln's assassination.

Sam's no Abe Lincoln! If he is then where's his giant mole? A why isn't one side of his face all dented in and paralyzed from horse hooves?
The comment by Tycho in the recap page regarding Sam as a steroid-using Abe Lincoln is pure conjecture. "He starts his sentence off just like the comment I just made- "Apparently..."
Tycho doesn't know! Where the f--k is he anyway?!
Besides, Abe Lincoln's name was never Sam, and he was never married to Samus and they never had a Jewish kid together named Sammy!

Hey Scott, speaking of your turn-
I was just thinking about how just because you're doing a recap, that shouldn't count as your "turn" should it?
The first time you did the recap it was just to do the recap.
But technically, you can post the recap AND do your panel, right?

Looking good, Sean!
Yeah, because I was taking out so many characters by making them zombies and/or killing them, and because people always want things for characters to fight with, I'm hoping people will take advantage of a pretty bad-ass monster and have it cause trouble. I mean, c'mon! It's a xenomorph alien with Samus' blaster and Han's pants. That thing is SO EVIL. And it killed Samus, so you know Sam's pissed. Sure, if he can change the past he'll change the past, but if that alien got up in his shit, Sam would want to fight it. You KNOW he would.
Mainly though, I wanted to make sure people understood where the alien came from and whose body it incubated in. Zombie Han has that big hole in his chest and his pants are missing, oh look there's an alien that bursts out of people's chests and it's wearing Han's pants. Pretty cut and dry, I feel. But hey, Vegeta getting cut in half seemed pretty cut and dry too, didn't it?

Nice new Anchorbird panel, Scott! Rock on!
And something else about Anchorbird-
I wasn't around at the start of the stripjam where it is evident that people are kind of testing the waters with what it is the whole thing is about. Then people got comfortable, messes get made, and the whole thing became a great deal of fun. To the point where you were angry when it (frequently) went off track.
I don't feel we're past the "testing the waters" stage yet for Anchorbird. We're still feeling around. It's interesting that a major threat has shown up so early in the story. It does not leave a lot of obvious room for characterization when such a massively powerful entity is making its way as the crow flies towards a peaceful city. But I think we're getting there. I want to start tossing shit around. I want dangerous situations. Right now Anchorbird is fuzzy-headed, doesn't really have a reason to fight. For all he knows the Moon Tyrant might help him out.
Anywho, that's what's been on my brain recently. Anchorbird and the world he has awoken in are teeming to the brim with mystery. But is it interesting? Are we in a massive groove? Not quite yet, imo. But we're getting there. I'm excited by Jesse's cliffhanger. What's Schock going to do?
I hope it's not too Flash-Gordon-y!!! (inside joke)

It gets addressed occasionally. It's what distracted him on Rainbow Road when the bomb hit. I really like Scott's idea of a collaborative splash page for Anchorbird. We could decide where such a page (or pages) could end up in the story, or we could have them as stand-alone pin-ups. Obviously I wouldn't want to mess with the system we have going on, but it might be a nice break from thumbnail/page/thumbnail/page.
I even came up with a way we could do it...
http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/7555/4waysplash.jpg
1. We decide on one thumbnail.
2. Split into 4 (or more) equal pieces.
3. Four artists draw layouts for their respective quadrants, fixing any inconsistencies from the others.
4. The four artists independently work their piece up to final lineart.
5. Artists 1 & 4 color their piece. Then send their colored artwork to artists 2 & 3.
6. Then it's up to artists 2 and 3 to independently color their piece gelling with the artwork they received from 1 and 4.
7. Stitch together the finished splash page!
It may be a bit weird, but I've seen other such collaborations work really well. We have (close to) 16 participants, so we could potentially have 4 of these things.
Let me know what you guys think.

OMG, Taro, you're right! I was going to point out that you drew Sam in this current timeline first, and you didn't necessarily draw him without pants.

But then you went again in panel 137 and he is clearly seen tromping around in his underwear.

Then in panel 140 Godwin drew him in what looks to be pants,

Out of all the inexplicable things that have occurred in this story, Sam with pants was not something I was curious about. I asked Steve McBride if he had a website or something because his deviantART is empty, and he pointed me to www.myspace.com/stevemcbride . There's nothing new there, as all the art he has is from when we were at the Kubert school, circa 2005 or 2006, but I assume that's the most recent stuff he has on the internet.
Anyway, he wants to participate in Anchorbird. If it's okay with you guys I'll set him up.

I was looking forward to seeing what he would do with the StripJam first, but we have the guidelines set up pretty well now over at Anchorbird, so it's fine if he wants to be thrown down into the fire immediately. I trust we're still under 16 participants?

Steve McBride is the sixteenth person. Which means if someone else wants in, we gotta weed out someone who hasn't participated yet (which I don't think is fair quite yet, give it time), or tell them no.

Writing my recap now. It's being narrated by Gabe this time, to Tycho. I hope nobody minds, but I used a wrap-around kind of set-up to the exposition. Meaning, there's a bunch of dialogue between Gabe and Tycho at the beginning, then the recap, then more dialogue between them at the end. So it's sort of like two panels but I think since it's a recap and not really a standard panel, it should be okay.
Also it's frigging epic and explains a lot about the Star King and his relationship with Michael Jackson and the Major.

I wouldn't be so quick to boast/announce that your panel is ready.
Scott's panel isn't JUST a recap panel, he has story in it. Your panel might contradict whatever it is Scott's establishes.
Plus, announcing your panel is ready before the person ahead of you has posted theirs is just bad form. It has an air of "I don't even need your panel to do what I'm going to do."
ScottEwen
06-22-2009, 10:59 AM
True... my panel involves Gabe, Tycho, and the Star King. If your panel doesn't have those three characters in it you could get away with doing it early, but I've learned my lesson doing an early panel before. I had to redraw a lot of it.
colesla
06-22-2009, 11:06 AM
I don't mean it like that at all. I did it early because I know that you are recapping and the story in it is centered on Gabe and Tycho. Plus, I had time yesterday and I might not have much time later. I'm just eager to get it up there because I like to see this thing move quickly. The sooner my panel is up, the sooner the next goes up.

Yeah but my panel is about bringing Gabe and Tycho back into the story. In other words, my panel takes place in the Star Fortress and involves the story that's going on right now. Not saying you have to wait for me to finish, but my panel might contradict something you've put into yours.

so i think the strip jam is boggling up with too much dialogues these days. We need more action!!!
And idk, it's not as funny as before. :( To me, the highlights of this whole thing was
1) the panel where mario takes the star and goes, "Shit just got real."
2) yoshi bites snake's head off, and
3) when scott brought them all back in the land of the dead.

Well, considering that there was a good, four-panel fight sequence between Bowser and The Major not even 10 panels ago, I am going to have to disagree with you on that, Turtle Boat.
I have always felt that the StripJam suffers from too many absurd pop-culture references that derails the paper-thin plot (Ex: Garfield hanging out with South Park characters and peanut butter). A lot of people may find it more challenging to think up something funny and/or interesting to do with their panel that DOESN'T introduce a random pop culture reference.
Sure, too many words can muck up the flow of the story if the writer isn't paying attention (VIM22's Thor/Batman Jelly Syringe panel will always be a prime example), but it all depends on how fulfilled each contributor feels by the plotline when their turn comes around, and whether or not they have a good set-up to make a funny joke with their panel. There's a lot of shit going on currently. There's plenty of room for good "quotable" panels (like the "Shit just got real" panel, which was hilarious), but the next person in line needs to feel like that's what they want to do.
I'm notorious for writing word-heavy panels. I like moving story and explaining things. Before panel 160, my last panel was the Wutangurai cutting Vegeta in half (panel 143). A sight gag. 18 panels then went by that I had nothing to do with, and people still wrote word-heavy panels. Others wrote short, quippy, action panels. I think the current trend is due to the slightly more serious tone of the plotline. It currently seems to be a zany redemption plot. Slightly more serious than a chase plot (Mario chasing Solid Snake with the MOFL breifcase).
I also wanted to dissect your three examples.
1. Mario powering up with a superstar.
Very funny! A pop culture reference talking like a gangster. Very pleasing to read.
2. Yoshi biting Snake's head off.
One pop culture reference killing another pop culture reference. This has happened pretty much throughout the entirety of the stripjam. Is it as funny when the Kool-Aid Man got klled? Or how about when Bowser fried ShyGuy Mel? Or how about when Garfield killed Felix? Or how about when The Major killed Yoda? Any of these are interchangeable with Yoshi biting Snake's head off, imo.
and-
3. Everyone comes back in the land of the dead.
I find this to be your most interesting pick, because it is a MAJOR REASON behind a lot of the dialogue-heavy panels you are having a problem with. Characters get killed, they don't stay dead, then the next person is left to explain why they are back. Over and over again. But this was a good one, because Scott bringing them back was a plot twist.
This is the dynamic of the StripJam. You can't harp on people for wanting to tell a story. That's all narrative art is. You want to change the dynamic, then do it with your panels. Your last panel was word heavy, and didn't accomplish too much, imo. Your one prior to that (the Bowser Ryuken), was funny. Do more like that.

Man, this is a ton of work. I've been at it all day. But here's a preview of my top panel, what I have so far. This one is a particularly wordy panel as there's so many dialogue balloons I'm having trouble fitting them all in. And there's another panel after the recap with more dialogue.

2 things I noticed/need correcting-
1. You mention that The Major sees zombie Sam, but is unable to reunite him with his soul. Then the next time you mention Sam is when they're running to the time machine, but you don't mention that he's now human again.
2. It's a little confusing, I know, but Lauren did not kill Samus. her strike goes through that first zombie, then Spike, Han Solo, and Amy Winehouse. Samus is supposed ot be in the background, and is being impaled by the Xenomorph's tail. I had to cram a lot in, so I understand why someone would mistake that (plus, the sound effect is right next to Lauren's lightsaber).

I have a question about PencilJack- As a moderator, can you rearrange panels? The reason I ask is because Taro Mochi's panel would work great directly after your recap, and I don't want anyone to mistake his panel for not being canon.

True... that's what gave me the idea to have it be a biography of The Major... because the last 80 panels have essentially been about him as a main character.

I can't rearrange posts, unfortunately, I can only edit and delete. But since the header on my panel says it's a recap of 81-160, hopefully people understand that 161 is not included in that.

I would argue that the major in panel 36 and the Major Grubert disguise Sammy is seen wearing earlier is not the same The Major that is currently adventuring in the stripjam. You've already shared with us what the Major Grubert reference is from, and the major in panel 36 was nixed from canon in the first 80 panel recap.
So while Spidey pulled from these mentions of a Major character and the reference of Major Grubert, I would argue that they are in no way related to each other besides their rank. At least, one could argue...

It seems that the Original Snake who died of a P.B.O.D., certainly does have a history with the Sam Family.
I wonder when people will begin to explore all that?
Why was the original Snake rotting in jail in the first place? Why would Luigi disguise himself as Snake when he went to retrieve Lauren's money from Sammy? Why would the President (or whoever's pulling his strings) use Joker Snake to murder the original Snake, and why would they also want to bring Lauren in?
Robots, Presidents, and Snakes. Something is rotten in the state of StripJam...

The Major at the first is Grubert after he transforms into the white fly. Where Moebius left him at the end of the airtight garage storyline. The Major now is more of a mutated mid airtight garage version. No offense to Moebius, the strip jam version is more fun to draw. The details of space bees and tattoos make him an entirely different person. Even if he does go back in time I hope this one stays around.

Oh shit, that is Major Grubert. I've seen this art before too.
You'll have to excuse me, as I have not read my dad's old heavy metal issues in about 10 years, so my Moebius recollection is fuzzy.
I also didn't realize that Spidey got that reference.
But yeah, considering that our Major is just called "The Major" and doesn't share the same wardrobe anymore, I count his current form and persona as original. More of an homage to Grubert than it actually being him, let's say.

I'm almost positive that Sammy is an original character but Sam and Lauren may or may not be. Lauren was briefly shown (in Joe Frontirre's panel) to be Princess Peach, but nobody else really went with it and it wasn't in my recap, so it's not canon.
Given her romantic involvement with Luigi, it would make more sense for her to be Daisy, though.

W&U - You're right!
No offense, VIM22, but sometimes I think you don't pay any attention to what's going on in these panels.
I mean, first you used Thor-Snake and Bat-Snake after one character was already dead and the other had become Joker-Snake. Then you had Han Solo dueling The Major after they'd already agreed to work together. And now you weren't able to figure out that Ringo Starr is the Star King despite the fact that Gabe said it two panels ago in plain English.
I understand that there's 160+ panels of continuity and it can be a bitch to keep track of who's dead and what's going on with certain characters, but to read that last panel and not understand that the Star King is Ringo? Again, no offense meant here, but are you just skimming the dialogue or what?
If so, you should understand that when you ignore the continuity and don't pay attention to anything, it makes it very frustrating for those of us that are invested in the strip jam.

I have another question about Moebius' Major Grubert- Was he British? He's dressed like the British soldiers from Gunga Din, but since Moebius is French, I don't know if h ever explicitly mentioned whether or not Grubert is in fact British, or if there is even a Great Britain in the universe Grubert exists in.
I ask because I've always thought The Major is British, in case no one has noticed how I write his speech. Since I wasn't aware of Grubert, when The Major first showed up I assumed he was just a generic British soldier-type, like from Gunga Din

Anyway, it doesn't really matter. The Major is definitely a pre-established character that has taken on a life of his own, much like a lot of characters in the StripJam. He's just risen to the next level, imo. If we changed his name I don't think anyone would even get the reference. Btu don't get me wrong, we should keep the name.
Anywho, I'm over it now. I just thought he was original and had this idea that I was defending Spidey's creation. Nevermind!

Wow good question Karl I have a day off tomorrow I will read through the books and see what I can find out. I don't remember his nationality being addressed. Screw it he's our's now.

Yeah, sorry guy. It was intended to be Major Grubert. I was trying to tie him in from when he was mentioned earlier on. Since the Grubert name wasn't every really mentioned after his introduction. He could be Major anything at this point to help seperate The Major from Major Grubert. I gave him pointy ears and huge mustache after he powered-up during the giant banana incident.

Notice the blue aura and ripped up shirt? It was kind of a homage to Dragon Ball Z's super saiyin transformations. I figured it wouldn't have to be explained since Mario did it as well early on. I wasn't trying to make him a spot on version of Grubert, hence the English accent and portal gun. I figured stipjam is all about taking liberties.
Darth Lauren's costume is totally original. The original Sith design I drew made her look a bit like Asajj Ventress so I changed it up to what she's currently wearing.
P.S. Jocko totally downplayed the size of the banana in his panel. I was would have loved to have seen all of Asgard covered in banana goop.

Nice Anchorbird curveball Scott! Now where do I go from there...

That is an awesome twist, Scott.
One thing though. The moon tyrant was going to show up anyways because of the double eclipse right? Wouldn't AB's timely appearance on Colthoria just be coincidental?
Totally agree, Scott. FYI i would have went back and re-read things before my next panel.

Er... well, you see...
Um, well, when Marty and Elsa first noticed the double eclipse, they seemed shocked by it, as if they didn't know it was going to happen. Also, it appears that Euh City has not taken any precautions against the Moon Tyrant, meaning they didn't know he was going to arrive either.
This can mean two things: either Colthoria has zero astronomers who can predict when a double eclipse could take place, or it's a completely unpredictable event that could happen at any time. Or maybe part of the legend around the Moon Tyrant is that his arrival is also concurrent with the arrival of a "savior" or a counterpart. Who knows?
Also, these guys are, I assume, not the brightest. They are backing the Moon Tyrant, after all. So them assuming that Anchorbird's arrival triggered the Moon Tyrant's return could just be because they're superstitious.

What the F is going O?
Waitaminute. Josie knows Bode?!?! J/k
Seriously though, those two soldiers are allied with the Moon Tyrant? They're separatists, right? There is an actual king of Euh City, but those two soldiers think they're pulling a fast one and are bringing Arnchorbird, for some UNKNOWN reason, to the Moon Tyrant. (because the Moon Tyrant has never explicitly stated any desire whatsoever to talk to some jack-off wearing jammy-pants with a tattoo on his shoulder).
Anchorbird has only been a "Person of Interest" so far. The city barely cares. These soldiers better explain themselves, OR they better be misguided idiots, and something terrible better happen to them.
Crazy.

Yeah, I meant the King's Guards to be separatists. There is an actual King (King G'nik) of Euh City, but these two are taking Anchorbird to the Moon Tyrant, who they consider to be the real king.
Maybe I should edit the dialogue to make that clearer.

I think it's spelled out pretty clearly that they're bad guys.
The only thing I can think of that is disparaging to continuity is the line in Rian's page where they soldiers are betting money that the King will throw AB in the pit. Why would they make that bet when they're really taking AB to the MT?

That is true.... hm. Maybe I should scrap this and redo.

I don't know what to tell you, it's a great twist. I'd hate to see it scrapped. I guess just do what you feel is best.
I also want to applaud you on a scene change in the middle of your page. Very clever. If you weren't going to bring Bode back in, I was thinking about doing it.

I'm thinking I could have one guy be the separatist and the other guy also being surprised that they're not going to King G'nik.
So ANCHORBIRD says "you're taking me to the King?" and one guy says "That's right --" but the other guy says "weeeeeeell, not exactly." The other guy would be the one to originally bet on King G'nik throwing him in the pit.
This would require Rian and me getting together and making sure we have two different character designs for the guards and making sure the correct one is saying the correct lines.

So you're saying only the guy piloting is a separatist? If so, the other soldier could panic if not taken control of. Maybe the one soldier could totally kill the other and AB could be all like "WTF?! You totally shot that dood!"
Like I said before, You'll just do what you feel is best. Rock on, Scott. And prosper.

That could work too. I like that actually, I'll probably do that.
And by the way, just because I'm an editor doesn't mean you can't tell me to change stuff. The "just do what you feel is best" is fine, but if there's something that really needs to be changed, feel free to say "try this instead."

Somebody should make a Book of Legends, that could be explained to AnchorBird it would give the Moon Tyrant a more powerful origin.....I mean maybe done the road.
