for those that dont know chiaroscuro is the technique of using shadows and strong contrasts, or light and dark in the work

hmm...its going to take me alittle while to decide.

i tell you this spidey...your drawing is well done but it doesnt say chiaroscura as much as physics.

I like Spidey's drawing a bit more, but like Teratophile said... that's not really chiaroscura.

Spidey, I'm really impressed with your entry. Although, I must agree with the others concerning "chiaroscura."

Physicdesigns has done a great job with it.

What to do, what to do...?

I've never heard of this before, but after doing a little research, it seems like Spidey's is more accurate to the technique than Physic's. I'm going with Spidey on this one.

I don't think there's necessarily a correct way to do chiaroscuro. I looked through my old art history books and it's really just forming a shape with light in darkness.

The bare bones scan just doesn't do the drawing justice. My scanner is never faithful to the colors in any medium I scan. That's why I tried to make up for it with some Ps tweaks, but shit hit the fan so I just cut my losses.

To be fair, Spidey's figure does display a more delicate form of chiaroscuro. Though Physicdesigns uses it to a stronger degree which most would probably find more readily recognizable. Strong shadows shaping the figure from within as well as without, for instance.

Wikipedia is hardly the end-all and be-all of sources but it does give great examples in historical art.

Though, at this point, I'd hate to point to the semantics when I enjoy both pieces as much as I do. Both did a great job and it's my favorite work of Spidey's that I've seen thus far in my short tenure here.

I sympathize when it comes to the scanner as well.

I was always taught that it was pure contrast between white and black. Similar to what Frank Miller does on Sin City.

No..The best example is paintings by Rembrandt and Caravaggio.

I think the PJer who does it often is Gobl1n.

It is technique which has a lot of levels there is light chiaroscuro, heavy, etc. in purest terms any form of shading can be considered chiaroscuro. however the ones with high contrast are usually the ones your talking about. Basically though your usually trying to convey a certain 3 dimensionalness with it the contrast defines the shapes, as well as making it more dramatic. frank miller is extreme chiaroscuro, boiled down to only 2 colors. in comic form, frank miller and especially mignolla, are probably the biggest examples, but there are a number of people who use it.

Id say your goal is probably to define the shapes more with shadows than with lines and create a dramatic focus, but thats just my two sense

I think its more harsh lighting then anything. Just very drastic.

Hey, look at that, you guys are getting a free art lesson in this draw-off. We should have more draw-offs where we practice a popular art technique to keep us brushed up on our discipline.

That is actually a really good idea, i think some ppl get stuck doing a certain style but if you pick up a comic they range widely in medium.

I went with physicdesigns, but only by a hair. The dappled effect is really nice.

Spidey, man- that's one of the nicest Scarecrows I've ever seen....ever! The texture is spot-freaking-on. Fantastic job!

God damn it you two i want to strangle both of you because this was a really freaking hard choice. Both of you brought your A game and damn it was nice showing. Though in the end I had to go with Physicdesigns's. The style of the image just really came out. Both of you have rep coming to you.
