Okay, but how Joes will buy the farm? How much to real-life will it be made? Cobra outnumbers the Joes and still manages to lose.

I can't watch the live action movie after the Cobra Commander fiasco.
This looks much more promising.

You can watch it on Adult Swim's site. I checked it out because of the involvement of Dave Johnson and Warren Ellis and was impressed. Really makes the 80s cartoon look like the crap it was, but that we might not have realized as kids.

I was the only kid I knew who realized the original cartoon sucked ass. To this day I still know people who are in denial about it.

Started out okay so far. And they don't seem hesitant to lay out some blood and violence.

kinda weird that this resolute is billion times better than the live action movie coming up.. with a budget of over $50 dollars...(not sure of actual budget uknow what i mean)

Nah, there's precedent. I think Tartakovsky's Clone Wars animation was a ton better than the live-action movies to which is was contemporary.
I'm only up to ep. 4, but I did laugh my ass off as Cobra Commander told the assembled men, "there will be no more of your CRAP this time!"
Definitely the best GI Joe I've ever seen, but then again that might speak more towards the weakness of that which has come before as much as it does to the quality of this. I mean, let's face it... the old cartoon is a product of it's time, and even then it was not the finest show on the block. I'm just pleased we're not doing red/blue lasers anymore.
Also, I'm feeling the lack of a PSA... I need this to cap off with a short 3-minute cartoon about the benefits of something that I should know, because knowing is half the battle.
They ought to at least say the line "knowing is half the battle" somewhere in this. C'maaahhhhnnnn...

I'm in love with Dave Johnson's character designs. Though it does make me realize that GI Joe had the most relaxed dress code of any military unit in the world.

'Tis on TV right now. Apparently you can catch parts 1-10 on the site now, but they won't be putting the 10-minute finale up until Monday, so if you're planning to catch it first you better tune in soon.

Weeellll... I'm collecting my thoughts still, but I think I'm largely positive about it. I I liked the adult tone and the improved animation, but I was ultimately disappointed with the characterizations and the plot.
The show seemed to take it for granted that we'd know who everyone was and what their relationships and motivations were. I vaguely remember most of the cast (still can't recall the name of the guy with the black beret who's apparently of equal rank with Duke?), but I'm 33 and remember the old show. I don't know if anyone would be able to care about most of the events in the show if they didn't already have some familiarity with the franchise. The "twists" at the end were all painfully predictable, and I don't know that any of the dialogue or events were particularly evocative of the writing of Warren Ellis. I guess I shouldn't expect much, it was certainly better than the plotting of the 80's cartoon, but I rarely accept "it's just a cartoon" as an excuse for mediocrity.
Most of the action was pretty hot, but that only serves to emphasize when the action is terrible. Duke and Scarlet standing stock-still back-to-back while thirty Cobra soldiers shoot at them (and miss, of course, except for a drama wound), is just downright infuriating. I don't know if it was because the budget for heavy-frame action sequences was starting to stretch by that point or what, but at the end of it all Cobra soldiers make Imperial Stormtroopers look like Kentucky sharpshooters
And Cobra Commander... seriously, why does anyone work for that guy? He executes more of his own people without warning than Darth Vader. I'm not even asking about how they took over an entire town in the heartland of the USA without being noticed by the state or federal government.
I really enjoyed the Storm Shadow v. Snake Eyes fight, as I expected I would, but what was up with the slicing of the wrists and piercing hands and absolutely NO BLOOD? It's not like they didn't start the series with Major Bludd in a pool of the stuff, Cobra-themed dagger in his chest. And it's not like they shied away from it when Snake Eyes was sniped or any number of minions take a bullet. But Snake Eyes effectively zips up Storm Shadows wrists like a teenager and nary a dribble?

I think I'm mostly on the same page as you, Ink. I just also think the skimping on characterization was a necessary evil of the episodic format.

PG13. never shows too much blood. There is an article over at AICN talking about how he got the job. (he says he wrote this BEFORE GIJOE the new movie had a final script.)
And if you've watched enough kung-fu movies, you know exactly what he did by slicing his forearms.
he was trying to "destroy his skills"
I thoroughly enjoyed seeing my favorite joe's even if in a glimpse. (no different than when we caught glimpses during Justice League Unlimited)
I would so love to see this turned into a series and THEN backstory given on joes. Over all I was well pleased.

I watched a good portion of this last night. It was pretty dope.
The frame rate for the animation could have been better. It just looked very, very choppy in places. And some of the dialog was pretty mediocre, especially for Ellis. Maybe it was parody though. *shrugs*
Overall, I think I'll buy this on BD before I ever see the upcoming "live action film."

wtching it again. it made me realize not only is this better than the live action gi joe movie..
in some ways this might be better than gi joe the movie the one with cobra la and sargeant slaughter.
i dont mind they dont they dont have to say who flint is.. who stalker is ..
..everything doesnt have to be explained with a caption mark like the hills.
y i think in someways this was even better than the animated movie was
1) they realize how bad ass snake eyes is ... not just being bitch slap by cobra la troopers.
2) gi joe and cobra actually died... althouh i wish its not bazooka as a codenamed gi joe who died..
3) bullets vs lasers..
overall its still not perfect but better than any joe cartoon/animated or live so far..
i wish zartan had a more grandeur death and i wish destro actually killed a named joe.

Bless you Chuck, I thought I was just being a picky animator, but yeah... there were scenes where I was thinking, "if someone had just put in a couple tweens, that would have been slick as hell".
I don't really know anything about the production of this. I know a little about animation production, though, and if I had to guess this was a case of really nice layout and planning, but mediocre execution by whichever overseas studio did the frame production, either because of the budget or the direction. I'm talking completely out of my ass on this, 'cause I did not check the credits to see who did what, but that's what I'm guessing.
I would like to find out more on who did the actual grunt work for this (down in the trenches, below the Dave Johnson/Warren Ellis level). It looked like fairly familiar CN mature style, similar to what we see in the Marvel D2DVD productions, but kicked up a notch perhaps? I would not be surprised to see some familiar names in there.

FLINT. Thanks man, that was going to pick at me for days. I hate when that happens. :D
PG13. never shows too much blood. There is an article over at AICN talking about how he got the job. (he says he wrote this BEFORE GIJOE the new movie had a final script.)
This would have been, I think, TV-14 (most of adult swim falls in that range), but I see plenty of anime on in the same block that gets plenty bloody.
And if you've watched enough kung-fu movies, you know exactly what he did by slicing his forearms.
he was trying to "destroy his skills"
Did not catch that. I just figured he was trying to kill him, and slicing up both the inner arms like that is a good way to bleed out. In fact, the whole scene would have made perfect sense to me if he had started to bleed, but then used some kickass mystic ninja shit to pull it back in while doing that extended "ARRRGGGHH" bit he was doing anyhow. I would have bought that and thought it was cool.
But that's not what they did. Anyhow, all I'm saying is I don't think they can use the rating as an excuse for not having blood after they started the show with a blood-soaked corpse in a pool of his own blood. I can believe that someone up the chain in the executive end of things got his jock in a twist and made an editing call based on bullshit, but frankly I think kids would be better served by making it clear that if you slice your wrists, you WILL bleed.
I thoroughly enjoyed seeing my favorite joe's even if in a glimpse. (no different than when we caught glimpses during Justice League Unlimited)

Ditto. I would watch this as a regular show, gripes aside. But dammit, bring back the PSA! Direct 'em at an older crowd or something, but bring 'em back!

Fell asleep watching it. Kinda liked the designs but for some reason I kept thinking Bart Sears designed the characters. They all had that ropey muscle look and wide jaws Sears loves to draw. Ultimately it was a bore.

I liked it. I liked the cartoon as a kid but ALWAYS had a problem with the lasers coming out of normal looking guns and the lack of killing. I understand if the good guys aren't going to shoot at a guy who just ejected out of his jet and isn't otherwise armed but I was always like, "Why isn't Cobra shooting the Joes when they're sitting ducks in mid air?! They're BAD GUYS, damnit!!" In my school EVERY kid agreed that it was B.S. but we all knew that the reason for it was grown-ups who didn't want us to see real war.
As a fan though, I loved this take on it. They took plots and origins that they put into the latest comics version (which were crap IMO) but made them cooler.
In the end, it was just a geekgasm for fanboys of the original, much like JLU and the new Transformers: Animated.
