As far as those names go, there are already Marvel characters named Wasp, Hornet, and Yellow Jacket. And then there's this fellow:

It's a decent design.
And no I don't envy you trying to come up with a good and original name.

Most insect themes were snatched up by the big two. In fact, a majority of the early Marvel characters has insect names, to the point that it was joked that you could take out the lot of them with a single, rather large, can of Raid.

I would suggest that you look for other striped themes and base the character's name off of that. Like, for instance, going with a white and light blue color scheme and calling him The Ghost of Argentina.

No, I don't think that's how it works.

How about Bumble-Boy?

Buzz-Boy?

Hive Master?

Drone?

No, those names all suck.

Sorry. You're gonna have to keep thinking...........

Further information on Marvel's Hornet can be found here.

That said, looking at this character in color now, the design doesn't scream "superhero" to me. He looks more like one of the faceless minions of a larger villain. Thus, calling it a Drone might not be a horrible approach.

As long as he doesn't call him the Zebra. I know of a writer who did that, and he's been lambasted as a racist ever since, though that wasn't remotely his intent.

I think I can help you keep your name and motif.
how about The Golden Hornet.
And to give his costume less of a grunt look add some light armor to his shoulder and give him long black gloves with little spikes on the knuckles kind like Kazuya from Tekken. May be add more insect like elements to the mask. Maybe long hornet wing that go to the back of his knees.

Don't help him think of his name, because when he gets a contract deal with a big agency you'll get the credit for the name, even though he thought of the costume and designs you made the name.. so naturally you'll get the rights and stuff.

remind you of anyones situation?

Do I detect a bit of satire there M? ;)

remind you of anyones situation?

Liefeld maybe? Though probably not. It strikes me as something someone might say if they weren't familiar with the way the industry works.
But I do agree Eric should be allowed to choose his own name for the character. It's fine if others want to suggest alternatives, but ultimately it is best he decides I think.

I was going to suggest Yellow Jacket, but looks like you nixed that one. I like the design, maybe give him a weapon?

marvel does not own the word hornet. or you can add "the" before it. if marvel had a character hornet-man they could own that name. but they can not own the word hornet. what about hornet-guy. the bee-keeper. the horny-hornet. the hornster. sir hornsalot. killer wasp. mud dauber.

I think there is a fine line on that, since it called a hornet and you can name things after insects. I dont think you can copyright a name that already exists because the bugs dont sue marvel. I think its when the name and the likeness comes into play i might be wrong but well run out of names for things if it worked like that.

I chuckled at that one:)

Anyway, why not look at a non English name for your character? Seems to work well enough for Volkswagen and Hyundai....

p.s. I know those are cars and we are talking about comic characters here but it's the idea that's important here. I think.
