picked this book up at the good old B&N last night because im a big Adam Kubert fan.

This book has Geoof Johns teaming up with Richard Donner to tell a superman story with adam kubert. The story kind of reads as a "superman #3 what-if"...the story begins with superman catching some space pod that zooms out of hyperspace. a smiling naked 8 year old boy is inside who turns out to be kryptonian. clark and lois adopt him and name his chris kent. however, Zod and his two cronies, Non and Ursa, are released from the phantom zone because chris is acting as a 'tether". together,t hey release all the other kryptonian prisoners from the phantom zone and take over earth, in the process trapping superman in the phantom zone.

supes howver, escapes and, teaming up with luthor, parasite, bizzaro, and Metallo, "take back" metropolis and earth.

Ill first talk about the story. The story summary sounds awesome, doesnt it? I mean, I thought so. However, everything feels so rushed and quick. Donner doesnt seem to have a very good sense of comic book pacing, and the whole story wraps up far too quickly. The final "battle" barely even happens. the issue with superman in the phantom zone comes with 3-D glasses and while i normally would consider such a move to be ultra cheesy, it was actually very cool. more comics should do this. however, in the end it ultimately wasnt worth it as supes escapes the phantom zone in about 4 pages.

The saving grace for this book is ultimately adam kubert's art. I have been a big fan of his since his ultimate x-men stuff. His covers are simply gorgeous IMO (i love the cardboard/white paint scratchy look) but there are points where it looks very rushed and sloppy. kubert is inking his own pencils, but it looks like he just drew it all with a pen, as in some points he doesnt even bother to connect all the lines.

Dave stewarts colors on this book are elegantly simple and understating, but they give a real depth and feel to kuberts art.

overall, the book had a great premise and hype around it with donner as a writer, but the speed of the book ruins it.

6/10.

I think I liked it a bit more than you did. I was never a huge fan of Superman and the movies in particular but Donner(and Johns) and Kubert seemed like an interesting combination. The story is rushed, but I would say that it's probably Donner compressing the story like he would for a movie. And with the almost immediate delays on Kuberts end, I'm sure things were cut and tossed out to save time. I would of loved to see Chris meeting all the heroes, learning about the earth's good and bad, and seeing Clark and Lois really deal with having to raise a krypton child differently from the Kents. The fight was short but the scale was really nice. I loved Luthor in this book. In the end, this probably should of been some massive 12 issue maxi-series, but it's still a short and sweet read that I think most people find something appealing about it that despite the hype and delays makes it a worth while book to have.

oh i agree its worth it to have...I mean the cover looks dope. I just wouldve liked to have spent more than 15 minutes to read through it all. and what exactly DID they do to Non?

It seemed like a much longer read for me than 15 minutes considering how late some of the issues were.

I loved this storyline. I'm a huge fan of Adam Kubert's style and storytelling ability.

Nick, you should check out Adam's run on Incredible Hulk, especially the Savage Land story with Wolverine and Ka-Zar, and most especially the -1 issue. Amazing stuff.
