This is a fun sketchbook, Bryan! :D Vegetarian zombies... ha!
Here's a suggestion: when drawing women, try to get rid of as many lines in the face as possible. You often draw those 'skin folds' starting from the corners of the nostrils down to the sides of the mouth. They make the women you draw look old and kind of ugly, to be honest. Something to experiment with.

Adam Hughes comes to mind first. Just study the way good comic book artists draw women. You'll quickly see similarities in their approach.

That last panel says to me: "Look out! Big-headed Dracula behind you!" ;)

Seriously, Bryan, there's some issues on this sequential page. The perspective in panel 2 is off. The girl and the doorway are too high up in conjunction with the table, unless there are stairs leading down from the doorway onto a lower floor, and there's no evidence of that indicated in panel three, so I think the table is too low on the horizon line, or the door is too high. One or the other.

The drapery of the girl's dress in panel three doesn't seem very convincing to me. I realize she's pregnant, and you're trying to show that, but it just doesn't look right, I'm afraid. Did you use reference to help? What time period is the story set in? Her clothes look to be circa 1960s era. I thought this story took place closer to the '20s or '30s era? Hairstyles and clothing styles say a lot to the viewer about the time period. I'm a little confused by the mixed signals I'm getting from this page.

Speaking of mixed signals, the lighting in panel three is also a little strange. If her dress is casting such a heavy shadow on the ground, then it would seem to follow that the light is exactly overhead. This means that she should also have heavy shadows under her nose, chin, breasts, and the underside of her arms and sleeves. Even the "fire exit" sign should be casting a respectable shadow here. Keep things consistant, amigo.

In panel four the mushroom cloud explosion isn't too convincing. It looks more like a stalk of celery sticking out of a test tube than it does a mini-explosion. Again, reference is your friends. Don't shy away from using it if you need to.

It's very difficult to draw the human head from a top-down view. I think you did okay with that in the last panel, but Stark's head is way too big! You could reduce it down 8-10 %. That'd put things more in proportion.

I know the blog threads aren't really meant for detailed critiques like the other lab boards, but I thought I'd offer up some comments for you. Hopefully you still have time to make a few changes on this. I believe the page would be superior if you made a few.

Always great to see you posting stuff, Bryan!

Hey Loston
Wow thanks..Yes the story time period is 1945 give or take..I got the maternity close from a friend at work from 1950 I thought it would fit since there is not a lot of reference except Lucy an Desi not much on the net. On panel 2 I can not disagree but if I drew here in spec you wouldn't see her..the script called for a front shot of Ted with Dorthy (op) saying " Hows my hero " I guess I should have planed that better.
Panel 3 Crap! I kept looking and knowing there was something.
Panel 4 I liked my cartoon test tube chain reaction thing going ( this was a comedy of sort a very light story ) But I do see your point..
and wouldn't you know it..Panel 5 was straight from reference...it was an Asian gal and her American boy friend..Dang! I figured it would be perfect.for the last shot.
Thank you so much for for stopping in Loston you know I always apprecite any crit Good or bad.
Thanks again!

Bryan, I gotta say dude, you are one of my favorites. I really enjoy you light hearted campyness, particularly in the zombie pieces, and then you have the ability to darken up hit us with the Living Dead Chick and bring us to the other end of the spectrum. I love it.

Very good update!

Like a lot the ND page! Finally one of my fave hero backs to hit the scene on PJ

The IG splash is a nice one...may I suggest to make him (just him)darker (more shadow), in this way the composition should work even better.

Good talking shots. Have a solid reference helps a lot in this kind of panels...in some way it's "easier" (not true, but I think you know what I mean) to draw Hulk destroyng NY street instead drawing talking people give them a realist and natural look.

Just a funny thing: your rough pencil are what usually I call "final pencil":D

Yes Alex he is...I was afraid if I thickened it, it would be taken for a cig.. (that wouldn't be a bad thing though) is it not clear because it leaves a question on what it is?

no problem pal... also watch the spacing between the words. I'm a fairly decent speller if you ever need someone to check things for you feel free to PM it to me or whatever. Or type your script into a word program or something and let it catch 90% of the mistakes for you.

shoot, one other small thing: last panel I'd make that guys arm cross just a little bit in front of his jacket/coat to add depth. If the image was bigger I might be able to tell it's crossing but as small as it is right now it appears the hand and the coat have the same line...

Bryan E.Warner
09-28-2008, 03:11 PM
Thanks again...I'm doing my best at the lettering..it's kinda tricky fitting the lines to a limited amount of space..Thanks for the tip on the spelling..you know a lot of times I'd swear I knew how to spell only to find I miss a C/S spelling-an i-e rule or some dumb thing jumps up and gets me.lol

Relaxed Brain

Hey Shawn
Hey Scott
Yes both methods are at my whim ( so to speak ) But with this project as my last 2 personal ones The Cosmos Bar and Nick Dean #1 it's kind been a school of hard knocks going the traditional way..I work it all old school and the balloons an lettering are part of the art just like the old days..and still used a bit today.

Looks much better, Bryan! The art tweaks are an improvement, and your balloon stacking is a lot better too!

You still need to add a comma between the words "tingly" and "ticklish" though, and your "W"s would be much more legible if you lifted the middle apex of the letter higher.

Holy Crap! A Piggly Wiggly! Haven't seen one of those in years. Nice work on the badge panel, Bryan! The girl's eyes in the last panel look to be a little low on her face. Might want to raise them up a bit. Here's an overlay that might prove helpful:

Forgot to tell you about panel 5 the way you drew the wall and the position of Frank so Zombie natural...and the good work done with black in the background make this a very good panel. As I said it seems you're wearing the big weapons for this pitch.

Loston have a good poin there...do the change he suggest and this page is portfolio quality

Hey Loston thanks..I'll try an revamp those eyes :)
When I was a Kid we had a Piggly Wiggly...the other day I was shopping at grocery out-let and there was Louisiana hot sauce with a Piggly Wiggly lable..( had to buy one 99cent's ) then found an old pic of the one we use to have in town years ago... and there ya go;)
Hey again Simone Thanks! :)

Bryan, I am loving those magic pipe sequentials. Very effective story telling there. Do you ever add color to them? I'd be interested in seeing that.

Hey Jake :)
you know the "Magic Pipe " is kinda made to color...( and it was brought up as a color book too.)
But for now let me get it into Comic form..Originally each panel is on a separate piece of paper..( it spent a very long time with a friend who wanted to make a animated version....but it finally fizzed.*sigh* )
So pages to come :) I have to kick off page #3 of FZ...and then I might need a break..lol

I like your work Mr Warner. But in my honest opinion it should be more agressive and dark if you want to draw superhero comics. It seems a little to whimsical.

Hey Lawrence :)
Thanks for stopping in...On Super-hero's I like'em and there are a lot of folks out there drawing them...in my 49 yrs I think I've always been a bit out of the box...so are the hero's I do...kinda like your average guy who's in unusual circumstances...like the reader could be thinking " hey that could be me " I do like things on the lighter side..but with Frank Zombie there may be a darker cast ;)
Thanks again for checking me out Lawrence.

I really dig these last two pages, Bryan. The backgrounds are superb. I also like the spotting of blacks and the hatching. Great angle on the first panel on page 4. Nice work all around.

This is a very good double splash. the general composition is very good...it show us Frank is still able to fell something as human emotions and how she was important for him. Very intense.

My two cents: According to me the armchair in the background is too small, and the several object in foreground are in a strange position...I'm sure you did a perspective grid before to place them, but there is something strange to my eyes. I think both table and chair is not just overthrowed, but also broken...maybe this is the reason they're a bit tilted

Hey Eddie :) Thanks.
Hey Simone :)
Of course when I originally thumbed this out everything seemed to be in proportion...you may be right about that chair,I was using panel 6 on page 5 to go from..
Yes the chair an table are broken...Lucy's apt going with the script is not as turned over as Franks office but a few things broken as she put up a fight.I've never had to do a double page splash before, and it was a bit of a challenge for me..I sure appreciate your incite and input..things I need to be on my toes with :)
