It had to happen eventually, right? Well, it did, because I haven't posted any art here in so long that it was starting to become pretty sad, at least for me.

So, this will be where I put all my art stuff. I won't post art in any other spot until I start posting my comic pages. This sketch blog will be where I put any warm ups, commissions, crap, etc. Don't expect anything great here. I haven't been drawing much at all this year so far. Lots of writing, but very little drawing.

I may dig some old stuff out and post it here, too, since other people are doing the same sort of thing. I will try and update at least once a week.

This is from this morning. Missing the old Alpha Flight, and I may do a full team shot at some point.

For Fathers Day, my wife completely blindsided me with a gift I was not expecting at all. She got me an Intuos tablet. I was floored. Anyway, here are a few sketches I did to initiate it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Popninja/Sketches/wacomsketches01s.jpg

This was just me riffing. I don't think they look half bad, considering I really haven't drawn anything in quite a few weeks. I really liked using it, and didn't think I would.

I came across this while cleaning out some folders. It's the piece I did for the 100 Artists project. This is before I added the grays in the finished version.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Popninja/turdsmall.jpg

This was an abandoned Conan piece that was for a draw off here a while back. It's weird looking, and a very strange composition. I'm not sure why I chose to not zoom out and show the whole figure, or the whole sword.

That's it for now. Two old pics. I'm working on something now on my Wacom that I'll share tomorrow...

That's a shame, because what you gave him was really awesome!

Only thing that bugs me is the anatomy of his left arm, namely the bicep region and shapes in the upper arm.

Pop, you must keep drawing. Please please please.

I'll try, and have been trying very hard. Last month, I would have told you that inspiration left me and wasn't coming back. Then, something "popped", so to speak, and I'm getting back into it again. But I'm a pessimist and a cynic at heart, so in the back of my mind, I'm not expecting this little rush to last too long. But, I'm enjoying it while I can.

I think a belt would help define the shape of the torso and seperate her top half from the bottom a little better than just the single line and the hatching that trails out of it. It'd also add a little more length to the top half to help sell the angle better. Just my $.02.

I truly believe that if you were able to push yourself to finish stuff, without excessive self criticism, you would be one of the top artists around here. You have skills, but they seem undeveloped. I know how hard you are on yourself.

Your quest for perfection is holding you back. Allow yourself to be less than perfect.

and keep drawing.

spidey976
02-23-2009, 07:06 PM
Gotta disagree Ugga ... I actually think Pop IS one of our best ... both artistically and when it comes to C&C.

Pop your quick stuff kicks some serious tale ... and to be honest whenever I see that you have given some C&C it makes me sit up and take notice ... striaght forward and to the point C&C.

Would love to see some more quick drawings thought ... ;)

Ugga Bugga

I think Pop is one of the best here. I also know that he gives up on drawings because he thinks they aren't good enough.

Please don't misunderstand my point. These drawings show that when he does draw, and allows himself to consider them finished, he is most definitely among the best here.

My assessment is that he applies the same blunt criticism to himself, which is fantastic, to a point. It can also be self limiting though if taken too far.

I guess my challenge to Pop is that he start realizing that he does have the skills,

When I said that his skills were undeveloped, I meant that I think he could progress at a faster rate. I didn't mean he hadn't progressed at all, because clearly his talent level, and progress is immense.

Popninja
02-24-2009, 07:26 AM
Two things...

First, thanks for the kind words, guys.

Second, Ugga's on the right track. I have some major issues with my art that go a lot deeper than just not thinking I'm good enough. I know I'm good. But I see enough art on a daily basis to know that "good" isn't necessarily worth very much.

I've got A LOT to work on. I've fallen back big time. I'm trying very hard to get back on track, and so far it's very difficult.

Thanks again, Bathill8, Uggs, and spidey976.

Since it's already inked and done, I can't post this for crits in the finished art forum, so I'll post it here. This is the bigger version of my piece for the draw off with Thordad.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Popninja/demonmed.jpg

I know it had issues; alot of them I didn't catch unfortunately until I was close to done with it. NickGuy mentioned something about McFarlane in the draw off thread, which is funny because I did a very rough blue line breakdown and then finished it all in ink, which is unheard of with me. So, if it has a McFarlane feel, that's the reason why.

Well, as a recent arrival, this whole thread is new to me. I really, really love that inking at the top. The only thing that jumps at me is that, like others said, Etrigan feels more 90's and the lady and the BG feels much more like classic Kirby or something. I love those huge chunky fields of black.

I think this is what strikes me about the Iron Man sketch, too, it feels simple and powerful.

I'm hoping to update this more regularly. I'm working on a comic right now with a writer that actually lives in the same city that I do. It's such a rarity and such a treat and something I never thought would happen. But it has, and I'm very excited. He's very tight with his script, though, but I'm hoping he'll permit me to put pages up here to get crits...because I will NEED crits on this. Right now, I'm doing character designs and setting designs that are a bitch but very necessary, and I want that stuff done right before I start up on the actual pages.

So, basically, look to this blog to be a little more active in the weeks and months to come...

Holy crap...

This may be the single saddest Members Art Blog thread of all Members Art Blog threads. Good grief, it's been over TWO ****ING years since I've posted a drawing in here. I could have put shitloads of PUMMEL stuff in here.

Wow, so neglected. Poor "Popninja's Magical Rabbit Droppings."

Well, I dragged it out of the depths of hell, so here's a couple of new things.

A warm up sketch from yesterday morning...

...and a finally finished WSG piece, that I'm going to post in that thread when I find it...

See you guys again in late 2014.

Also...whilst scrolling down...that Marshmallow Man totally mistook it for something Quiet Different!
Deviant Mind of Mine what it is and all.

Of course you can. Right now I'm sitting and looking at a lot of half-finished crap that I want to finish, because I don't want to trash any of it. So, there's more on the way...

Interesting...

Here's some old stuff I just came across today in one of my Photobucket folders...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Popninja/Art%20Archive/unusedTMNTjamcover.jpg

This was an unused cover for a TMNT art jam we did here a long long ass time ago. It's a horrible looking cover, but I don't think I ever posted it, so here you go. I guess this would be an example of a piece I would want to redraw.

But wait, there's more...

Here's another piece that from that same Photobucket folder that I drew that no one has ever seen. It was a fan piece I did for Jeremy Dale's old creator owned comic called "Trust."
