Higgins/Diaz collaborations!

Ninjaboy Higgins and myself came up with the idea to swap original characters every week or so to see what twist we do on them. So here is just a rough sketch of 2 of his original characters just to kick things off

alright here goes your first challenge higgins!

nevas is a female chimera, she is also a space pirate in a futuristic world......so she has to incoporate pirate stlying, futuristic gagets and the attributes of a chimera such as a lion or cub-like face ,goat horns,bird wings or talons, and a snake tail or whatever the hell those myth creatures have

ok, the challenge is on! haha those are cool characters btw. i think i'm going to end up doing the chimera...cuz i'm better at drawing girls..and i'm not into the whole demon thing so we'll see how that turns out!


alright, now for your challenge kris! here is a character (the idea never went too far) she doesn't have a name but the idea is that she is from a distant forgotten place of asia and has a magic tattoo that covers her body (most of it anyway) and when she want it (the tattoo) comes to life as a dragon...(the tattoo is a dragon...the chines kind)...she fights ninjas and sorcerers.

ok...gonna have to look at the bottom left side of this page and find a girl with a mowhawk...(can't find any other pics of her right now) her name is black neon...she is cybernetic inside but looks very human. (except for the holes in her head and on her body in certain places...they vent radiation) she's built for one purpose...to kill, so the creator didnt bother with things like emotions or pretty voice simulators ...just kill...so she's hard core.

Black Neon's umm pelvis, is incredible LONG. From her bellybutton, she has miles of real estate it seems, where the barcode is should be the beginning of her naughty bits. Looks silly like that.

it's Bazooka girl, she's always packin heat. she's got a thing for bazookas...(they get her off) so she's a little punk 'ish'...almost has a tank girl attitude.

no but that might make a pretty cool thread.:D . Kris and I swap a character about every week and draw them for eachother...see if we can't do something cool with em. you should totally start a thread and have a weekly picture that everyone tries to 'one up'.

It's just a few illustrations I've seen here are line for line pretty close to some illustrations I've seen by pros, most easily recognized is Travis Charest. I don't really understand what's wrong with my comment... I can scan in the art I'm talking about. I have it in a comic on my bookshelf. What I'm saying is that they have "original character" posted all over their illustrations, when some of them aren't original at all. If you are using an established pro's character as the reference for your own character, you should probably give them credit. As for the waste of talent comment, what I meant was that they obviously have talent, and I think it's a waste to use it on art and character designs that look just like someone elses and call it your own.

Many artists learn by copying. Many artists use reference. I can see that Ninjaboy's work looks like Charest's as well as you can, but there's nothing wrong with that. He's still learning - we all are. I copied art by Ron Frenz, John Buscema, Art Adams, Mike Zeck, and Jim Lee before I figured out how to do everything on my own.

I understand that many people learn by copying artists they like, we've all done it. You're right, it is one of many ways to learn. But, when you have a thread that clearly is you stating that these are your original characters, when they are characters copied from someone else, it'd be nice if that established pro got some credit. I've had someone swipe my art for a freelance job they did, and it's really annoying. That's a little different because it was paid work and not for learning, but I still believe credit should be given when you're telling people that it's all "originally created by you."

After looking at your art blog I understand why you're being so defensive... it looks like you're doing the same thing. You obviously have some talent, and I love all your influences, but when you tell people that one of your characters is an original design and concept, maybe it actually should be. And if it's obvious to someone that it's swiped, it wouldn't hurt to at least tell people that it's "heavily influenced by..." At least then it's only a half-lie.

I was just pointing out that if you're going to "learn" from another artist by copying them then you need to give them credit, and certainly not call them your own orignal characters unless there are in fact that. well..quite frankly..maybe you should "learn" some social skills...and don't blame hades,..i honestly can't believe how overwhelmingly narcisitic and sociolpathic you are. first of all, i would actually like to see what you're talking about...yes, i'm guilty as charged when it comes to travis charest being an influence of mine, but i'm not very aware of tracing any of this characters or stealing ideas that aren't already in the mainstream. but heaven forbid something we think of could possibly already be out there.

As soon as I get home I'd be more than happy to scan the exact drawings you swiped from. And as for my social skills I tried being polite and apologize about arguing with him on your thread. There is nothing narcissistic or sociopathic about ANYTHING that I've said. Is it narcissistic to point out someone passing off someone else's work as their own? So nobody is suppose to ever point that out or else they are a narcissist, sociapath, troll, hater, etc? You and I both know that one of your character designs is much more than a coincidence of something else that's out there. It might be a coincidence if the character in question wasn't exactly like a character drawn by your biggest influence. Not to mention a few of the things drawn are EXACTLY like his drawings. Very nice work higgins diaz. Some of them i get a grafitti vibe from which in my book is very cool. I started out with a spraycan until a teacher gave me a sketchbook and said I would have better luck staying out of jail. I am not that up on Travis Chavest, what i have seen I like, but i also see some Jeff Matsuda influence, maybe? Anyway thanks for doing this cool thread have you guys considered doing a crossover comic with your charachters?

As far as the purpose of this thread is concerned, I would like to suggest that maybe you guys could tweak what you're doing slightly-
Instead of running through your dictionary of vaguely familiar and what some seem to feel are already-established character designs, you guys could take turns picking a certain archetype character to base a design off of, then post your different takes on it. That seems like more of a challenge, imo. You're designing instead of just drawing each other's characters.

There's a giant well you can draw from, from fantasy races/job classes (dwarfs, necromancers, squires, thieves) , science fiction staples (robots, aliens), superhero-types, cowboys, pirates, indians, zombies, universal monsters, lovecraftian horrors, historical figures, soldiers, warriors, etc etc etc. Design an original Street Fighter/Star Wars/ RPG character that could fit in seemlessly with the established universe.

That seems like more of a fun thing to do AND see happen rather than watch you guys cycle through your personal character files. This also could curb accusations of drawing LadyTron or other established comic book characters in an 'original character' thread.

now we should come up with another system to our madness...here are my ideas.

idea 1.) we each think of a word and write it down, combine them and create something out of it...could get weird.
idea 2.) one of us makes a topic. and we each do what our imagination comes up with.
idea 3.) see if someone else has an awesome idea.
idea 4.) make a huge list of nouns (people, places or things) and try to combine 3 of them to make something....then replace the words with new ones...

just some ideas...let me know if you think of anything...OTHER IDEAS WELCOME! oh and my DA page is up...go scope it out.
