By the way, I always told you you would be a much better artist than me. I didn't have the right opportunities when I needed them and I had to go in a different direction....but at least I can still draw a little bit.

I'm not much of an inker but I decided to try inking with a brush for the first time ever. I did not want to take a chance of screwing up my original pencil piece so I made a bullshit Xerox copy on copy paper and inked over that. It is obvious that I have a lot to work on but any crits, comments, accusations are more than welcome.

I went to my very first life drawing session ever last night. It's called the "draw-a-thon" and hosted by Michael Alan. For those of you interested, you can check out the website at www.michaelalanart.com

It was a great gig, with people actually performing theater as well as having live music played simultaneously. There were six models all together ranging from early twenties to mid sixties, five women and one man of varying body types. It was definitely different and I enjoyed it. Being able to connect with other people with similar interests goes a long way.

Here are some of the pages that I sketched out last night. I will be attending next saturday night as well and i will post everything I do in the session on a weekly basis.

Thanks for looking.....

Thanks Shawn. I've been struggling of late with my creativity but I hope to change all that with the life drawing sessions I have been attending. I try to watch and learn as much as I can and I try and improve everytime I draw. It always has to be better than my last piece.

I think you misquoted me, I meant "six women and one man, of varying body types", meaning fat , slim, young, old, etc.

I'm glad you enjoy the drawings I do of the Voluptuous women. Not too many people do appreciate that type of art but it is a part of my repertoire so I continue to draw them. As far as the Hellboy Expression I just looked in the mirror while I drew it. My Nephew Kris says that it does bear a striking resemblance of me, and who would know better than he, LOL.

honestly there nothing wrong or lacking creativity there.possibly being a bit too critical of your work

besides they are more like anatomical or gesture studies so they are lacking outfits and little intrical details.maybe thats why you feel there is a lack of creativity..............when you get back to it im sure youll knock some shit out!

Good stuff, man. You picking up good tidbits you can apply to your work from the photo reference drawing? It's really a great way to hone your skills with proportion, anatomy, lighting, and so forth.

I think you might be overdoing the trapezius muscles and necks a little, and also making the heads of your heroes a little small in proportion to their bodies though.

I'm enjoying your blog thread a lot, dude! You have a classic eye and approach that I really appreciate.

Actually I've been combining the two, photo reference and my own imagination for each of the last couple of drawings. I think I have been having some decent effects with it and since I have been in such a creative rut lately I will just keep combining the two for a while.

Certain times, you may be over critical of your work, or in the middle of a rut because your going through a period of growth. Its one of those things that is hard for an artist to see for themselves until they get through it. However, I don't think I am the only one who has noticed the increasing skill evident in each drawing.

While photo reference is helpful it's my two cents that drawing directly from life is best. You don't need a model to sit, but just draw from what you see everyday. You also don't have to complete a whole sketch, but try capturing a pose or movement in some quick lines.

(WARNING: NUDITY) Here are my latest life drawing session pages. this last one was very intense, I was really into it. I tried a few different things like improving my shading techniques and the last one was just go with the flow improvisation of a very unique looking model.
The first one is of a very talented artist who is also a very gifted model as well, she sat down and drew for a while then posed for the drawing with all the gold chains that were put on her neck.

I love your sketches.

I laugh at the "WARNING: NUDITY" attached to life drawing sketches. That's just absurd, while people here post all kinds of violent bloodshed with no warning whatsoever. That's not a knock on you, Flava' P; I just wish people could benefit from seeing the work you're doing without having to click a link. Life drawing, IMO, is important and I find it silly that we have to link drawings like these...especially like these.

Are your images too big to scan, or do you just not have a scanner?

I love your sketches.

I laugh at the "WARNING: NUDITY" attached to life drawing sketches. That's just absurd, while people here post all kinds of violent bloodshed with no warning whatsoever. That's not a knock on you, Flava' P; I just wish people could benefit from seeing the work you're doing without having to click a link. Life drawing, IMO, is important and I find it silly that we have to link drawings like these...especially like these.

Are your images too big to scan, or do you just not have a scanner?

Thank you for the positive comments Popninja. I really have to agree that it's ridiculous to have to link images of art that some may find offensive. I feel that people who have an issue with nudity in art have no business viewing any art sites because the two are really intertwined, one cannot learn proper anatomy and shading without nudity. We, as an art based community should not have to censor our work because a non artistic element may view this site. Thats what they have parental controls for.

Yes I do have a scanner, I'm just a lazy bastard lately and taking pictures is so much faster, but I will start scanning again to give higher res pics of my stuff.

Here is my HEAVY METAL based WIP. This is something I have been dabbling with on and off for over a year. I have just had no motivation to finish it. I am also trying different things with markers and color, been picking up some cool things that I have seen in my life drawings sessions. The crap below is some more photo reference stuff that I do just to pass the time when i'm bored and can't think of anything to draw.

WARNING: LINKED FOR NUDITY AND ADULT CONTENT

Don't know what the hell compelled me to sketch this but I wanted to do something straight from scratch with out worry about pencils or making mistakes so this was a straight up marker to paper smorgasbord out of the darkest recesses of my warped mind. I probably should not even post this up but hey, some will perceive it as art, some will probably see it as smut. If you're a sissy, don't look.

I have not been very busy lately, kind of falling off. I did do a collaboration with one of my pals from my life drawing sessions. It's a Zombie portrait. I designed the face in pencils and he hit the piece up with color marker and graffitti.

I am a HUGE fan of the X-Force series that is out right now, and I love the artwork of Clayton Crain. I decided to try my hand at drawing some of the remarkable faces that he did in some of the issues. I did my best to match up the colors using Prismacolor Markers. On the same page i decided to draw my own Heavy Metal inspired character a la Simon Bisley whom I also admire. Hey, at least I'm trying.

Lots of Accusations of people tracing who use reference material going on out there (Actually it's pretty funny watching people lose their cool and act like idiots) But just in case anyone gets any stupid thoughts about me I figured I would put up the actual reference photo I am using for my hellboy draw off submission, and an update....

I would never have accused you of tracing regardless of whether you placed the reference and the picture side by side. Your drawings have too much integrity and solidity.

Just be careful with over rendering Selma's face. You can prolly fix it with a grey tone but all the hatching makes her a bit manly in the face.

Your work is always great to look at, Flava. It seems you and Kris are crazily creative with the amount of work you put out.

I'm just a work in progress and trying to teach myself to draw.
