very organic style. your inks dont do your pencils justice though, you should work on inking more. you obviously have a great handle on rendering, you should work on anatomy and inking.

It's quite incredible the amount of work you push out a day. I would say to really try to focus on tightening things up, making things smoother so they don't look rushed. The speed is great for capturing energy, but try to use that speed for more of an underlay and take a little more time and you'll be top notch quick.

Kris nice work on this and design but I would remove the face in the background because it fills the page a little to much and takes away the focal point. But I love this piece from you, keep up the good work man.

Example:

The eyes feel a bit more relaxed now to me.

Good work ethic, dude. Being under house arrest has a good effect on you. The weakest piece on this page I have to say is the Supergirl piece. You just need to work on faces or scale up your smaller drawings in photoshop so you don't lose proportions.

Just get into the habit of doing thumbnails. A lot of people suffer the safe problems (myself included) when they go gung ho and work big. What happens feet don't fit on the page and heads get cropped. Your Supergirl suffers from that because you tried to fit all the length of her legs on the page making her look really short.
Same with the short haired femme fatale.

Avoiding cropping the top of her head and trying to fit the gun by bending it. If it means you gotta reposition her arm to allow the gun to fit on the page properly you gotta do it. Cool stuff nevertheless. Keep busy, man.

KrisDiaz
01-10-2008, 05:43 PM
actually the supergirl was one of the first pictures i used a thumbnail....i just didnt stick to it very well......i didnt think having her off the page was a prob. but i see the effect it has now......as for silvia ,the short haired femme fatale as you put it...the picture started off as a concept for the bulletproof corset but after all the rendering i had to squeeze her in the pic....its extremely hard to draw a character from the center out!
thanks for taking the time to shed a little light on my mistakes.I wish more people on this site would reply with that type of informative comments.
and yes house arrest has helped my art very much...it just sucks that i had to do what i did and go through this shit to have my skill get where its at...i just hope i can build a job and maybe a carrer outta this

Dri
01-10-2008, 06:08 PM
I think people are reluctant to be more informative in their crits because there could be a backlash from people being defensive. There is a lot of reasons really. Other people can really dig your work and see nothing wrong with it. At least you are getting comments, mate.

That's cool you want to make a career out of it and you're working hard to make it so. Maybe trying something different from working from the centre of the page. Gesture drawing, armatures, skeletal framework can really help in that regard. It's quick and provides a solid foundation.

Hey Kris - a couple comments and crits for you... These are more general than anything else, as opposed to being about a particular piece.

It looks to me like you kinda just draw as you go, which leads to a bunch of structural issues. Your rendering is very good, which covers up a lot of those problems at first glance. Example - a lot of the faces (particularly female) end up a bit lopsided and too small, while a lot of the arms end up being too long or too short.

I'd really recommend that you dig around online and find a pdf copy of Loomis' Figure Drawing for all it's Worth. It's an older book that is out of print, but you should be able to find it free online somewhere. It's an excellent resource and should really help you work out some of the structural kinks.

By the way - I think that Silver Surfer/Thing piece might be the best thing I've seen from you. It's got nice rendering and consistent lighting which makes the picture much clearer. Keep at it, and keep posting!

Nicely done Kris ... I really like this piece. I noticed that there are some more spot blacks on Deadpool then the rest. So I was wondering if some more blacks would help make some of the others pop just a little more. There are some small hand issues ... but overall this is a great piece.

Nice work here Kris

I love the Ultimates pic ... Cap looks amazing ... though Hawkeye's right arm looks just a bit siff.

With the Vampirella piece I think her nose may be a little thin ... and a bit high on her face.

Great work m8 ... I need to learn how to render like this ... and I know ... practice practice ... practice.

I like the addition of the Wasp into the Ultimates drawing you did. Do not ink that, leave it as pencils but do try and put something interesting in the little bit of background space that is left. Hawkeyes chin is Too pointy, square it off a bit.

As for the Vampirella pic, Redo the nose, eyes, and mouth on this piece. The left eye (hers) is higher than the right. The nose looks a little thin in the middle, use a reference if you need to. Thie lips looked a little warped.

After you make those corrections to each piece they should both be quite impressive.

Dude, Kris, I'm loving everything about your work. These are excellent pieces with a very fun and enjoyable style. But there is a problem with most of them. You don't draw natural looking faces/heads. The heads just don't feel like they're attached to the body, and the facial features don't seem to fit the head. Don't get me wrong, I love your work, but that kinda jumps out at me.

thanks for the input covie.....im well aware my faces suck.im been trying to sketch them more and used andrew loomis' drawing faces and hands. after reading a lil bit of the book my faces suck more!?! so im kinda lost as to what the hell to try next.maybe photo reference till i get the hang of constructing faces and/or come up with my own way thats comfortable for me to draw em.cuz the loomis way seems to not help me......any suggestions anyone?

Listen, I didn't mean to offend you if I did. I'm sorry dude. Just pointing out what I saw.

As far as method for faces? My work blows complete chunks, so I wouldn't be the best for advice, but photo reference and material study from other artists would be my suggestion.

Keep drawing different stuff. Keep experimenting and keep sketching. Your stuff is starting to look a little looser and I suspect that once you have loosened up your best work will follow.

Keep working with color too. I will pick up a set of Prismacolor markers like the set that I have and I will send them to you. You have a great natural style of your own and you need to stick with it, not become a clone of someone else like so many others that we have seen. Sure there are a lot of things that you have to improve but you have a huge upside.

Now stop being a turd by reading this bullshit and go draw!!!

A very wellrendered piece. tThe Inks on Pacino looks awesome. the "dotty/grainy" style adds to the work.
I'm not a big fan of the graffiti-like style on "Scarface", but that's just me. It's still well done, none the less

the only reason why the story has gotten better is cuz its from a script (by craig smith) so i actually have something to go with other than my usual "**** it i just wing it" pages.also the writer would like to have it colored and is looking into getting it done...so i am also looking forward to seeing how my shit looks colored by someone else(cuz it usually looks like crap when i color?!?)

Man thats a lot of work, I looked thru all of your pages man!

One recurring problem you have, Awkward cropping, and tangents. And the tangents are caused by the awkward cropping.

You crop at the knuckles of hands, and through feet a lot. And you leave feet out a lot.

What helps with this is thumbnailing and planning.

As far as inking goes try the refillable brushpen by Pentel.

And for the leadholder, man I love using H lead, then tightening with 4b, it almost looks like ink.

Keep it up man.

Hey Kris,

first off, you show a lot of dedication, which is something to be admired.

Things are still shaky in a lot departments. Anatomy and perspective are of course the most important ones. But also rendering of materials. These are things that you'll have to study, which of course takes time. But you'll get there, don't worry.
One thing I'd like to stress: try to get the basics down before overcommitting to a drawing or sequentials. So make sure the perspective is good, the proportions on the figures are all right, etc, and then go nuts with the finishing touches.

$25000 is a lot of money. How do you like the SER?

By the way, that smokey the bear is the coolest thing I've seen all day!

the s15 started at 28-32,000 and dropped to 25000 when it was sold...which wasnt bad for a 2000 s15 with a 250hp
sr20det motor and it had a factory bodykit so it was cool!

My se-r spec v is pretty cool it was only $8ooo so that was way more reasonable...its got a 2.5 with lots of torque and even with the limited slip differential,6 speed and 17" street tires i get lots of torque steer! the interior is nice stock
(its red and black) and ive got it lightly tuned so it moves, problem is it takes 91 octane and gets 16mpg city!!!!!

hows your s13, any mods on it, im thinking of getting a s13 or s14 and converting it and using for a project car

Kris,

Not a bad job on inking Brokenhill's military image! I think it might benefit from a few more thicker outlines around the soldier so that he pops away from the tank in the background a little more, but you did a nice job staying true to the pencils. Good work!

Like the Thor too! He's powerful looking, and Thor should always look like he can go toe to toe with characters like the Hulk. If you indicate a little bit of the underside of the hammer's head, the hammer might not look as flat as it does, and some stronger shadows on Thor's left arm and other places might really put this drawing over the top.

Cool post.

My s13 right now has the stock KA. Me and my wife got the car and engine for $600 and made the car from auto to manual. It just has exhaust. I have some no-name coilovers to put on it and an SR20, but I hate working on cars in the summer. It's already 113 degrees here in Phoenix and no fan really cools you down even at night.

Ever track the SER? Looks like a fun car!
