best thread title ever.
Like the last page the most. Nice colors on Leia.
Glad to see that you're back in the game, and that your health problems are far away or at least don't prevent you from working on your art anymore.
Great delivery, your style gains fluidity and subtlety through time it seems, and these sketches kick butt! I really like the first and last pages.

LOL. He's throwing it.
I probably should have depicted his arm at the end of a big swing, maybe even exaggerating it.

speedpaint.
A few words about my sight problems:
To summarize: it hasn't bettered. I still have trouble seeing. (There are a lot of symptoms.)
If I draw, paint on my 'puter, that comes at a price. And I can only do that in relatively short stretches.
Right now, I'm motivated enough to not care; insofar that's possible of course.

What impresses me the most about your stuff is the variety of subject matter. It's all across the board , which is coo.
Impressive batch once again. I absolutely love the last one, even if I have absolutely no idea of what's going on (but maybe it's an abstract peice, and in this case just slap me. It does seem like some sort of creature in a cave though).
I also really like the post-nuclear chill-out. Yeah multiple light-sources are the bitchest things, I often find myself struggling with them too. You pulled it out pretty well.
The cow-boy piece is alo pretty cool. Question on this one: did you use reference? It's just that I find the volumes on the horse's head really well executed!
Otherwise, ditto than bindlestitch, sorry to hear about that condition that doesn't seem to want to go away... Tell it I hate it, that actually nobody likes it and maybe eventually it will (go away). Bully tactics, I know :/

You know what I hate? I hate how you make this seem so effortless. Your art seems to come out just right. I find it hard to see things that I don't like in your art. The compositions are strong, the anatomy is solid, the lighting and mood are usually perfect, and the poses always convey the right emotion. And even though you work in digital format, it doesn't have that feel to it.
So could you at least pretend like you struggle through the process?

LOL ! :D
it's when you achieve a line that looks effortless and doesnt look like its been overthought or dwelt upon. And that only comes from practice, practice, practice. And I can see from the range of subject matter and style you have dedicated quite a bit of time to your talent. Something more of us should do, me especially.

Landscape speedies (+/- 30 min. each.) From reference, I should add.
http://www.astella.Com/lava/ls.jpg
Simone - Thanks for the compliment on the Batman/Joker. :D
About tutorials: there's a wealth of great 'how-to's' and tutorials online, obviously. I've acquired my knowledge about painting techniques and theories through years of accumulating info on various sites, and from various teachers. So it's hard for me to give you just a couple of tutorials.
And if you want to learn how to color in Photoshop, google it, and read and learn.
There are almost endless ways of coloring in photoshop, and you'll have to find the technique you like best. But that'll take time.
If you really want to start with the basics, study color theory.
Good luck with it.

Those speed paintings are rad. Did you use reference for those?
Also, I've never done speed paintings, but I know it's a common tool for improvement. What exactly is it designed to help you on?
Ra Havok
06-12-2008, 10:29 AM
Shoryukenmaster - I forgot to mention these were indeed from reference. I'm not so great with landscapes, so these were for much-needed practise.
The main thing with speed paintings is that you can't 'render' anything. You have to be more deliberate with your brushstrokes (brushstroke economy). Also, by painting fast, you can better understand the way to best paint certain surfaces, use color palettes and so on.

What the hell's bland about this? You captured a very specific mood in this illustration with a finesse that most artists contributing here should envy. I like it.

^ That's a really nice portrait, Billy Bob (;) ). The face is well done (as always) but what really gets me is the wallpaper-like background that fades in and out of focus. Nice touch.
I'm also digging those medieval doodles on the previous page. The simple lines are very effective and are a kind of a departure from your usual style. Are they referenced from somewhere?
Anyhow, it's always a pleasure browsing this thread. :)

as i said in the other thread, I really like that piece, ra.
the "blank canvas"/"one color" motif has been used before, so this isnt necessarily groundbreaking art, but you've utilized the internet as medium in this piece.
The title "in the moment of clarity, we see the least" can be interpreted many ways in this piece. Here we have a moment of "clarity" the white space) but we "see the least" by expecting more. By making the piece long vertically, you bring the internet/web browser into the piece and make it an experience of the art by forcing us to scroll down to view the whole piece...and the whole time were still expecting something to show up. In this moment of clarity, we arent appreciating the nature of the space, we are "seeing the least".
Well done Mr laurens

I know what you're talking about concerning the Joker's foot. I can put it in this equation:
hard angle + poor artist = tiny foot.
By the way, that guy IS going to pull a Wile E Coyote!! :D Hahaha, that was what I imagined, at least.
