Yeah, I've found that Cutting Edge Comics is a pretty good quick reference, especially for tricky head angles, hands, feet and some expressions.

Not all of those sketches are right out of the book. Several of them are mine in the same style (like the wide eyes), but I didn't see any reason to separate them, as it was all just practice.

Hey, Wes- You picking up some valuable knowledge doing the referenced muscle sketches? A good way to learn from that sort of exercise is to do a drawing with reference, take a pencil and paper into another room and then draw it from memory. Compare the two drawings. Believe it or not, it's good practice, because you're training your brain to observe and remember details, shapes, proportions and other aspects. Give that a try.

Hey Loston,

Yeah, I'm finding the muscle sketch group invaluable. I was falling into the trap of "memorized" poses where I would only draw the same thing and not actually think about the body position, musculature and what was happening. Talk about some stale drawings. This has really helped to break that habit. Plus it is putting a lot more realism in my work. For example six pack abs are almost never perfectly symmetrical, adding those little flaws really brings things to life.

I really like the idea of redrawing these from memory. That is a fantastic idea. Thanks for the tip!

So, Sunday I managed to fall down a mountain and break several of my ribs. . .

(And if one more person from work tells me I'm too old to be learning to board, I'll kick 'em in the shins!)

Anyway, thed meds they have me on are messin with my coordination, so I've missed the last couple of days sketchin. They said not to operate heavy equipment, get married or sell the house while taking this schtuff, but I don't think my wacom counts as heavy equipment, so back at it!

I’d like to give a big thank you to everyone who has helped me with the Emma Frost picture above. There are a few more tweaks I’m going to make, but I think I’ve learned all I can from it at this point.

This leads me to a question I’d like to pose to those of you that are so kind as to view my blog. I made some comments recently in the Greg Land (http://www.penciljack.com/forum/showthread.php?p=994973#post994973) thread that were well received, for the most part.

However, one individual felt the need to give me negative rep with the following comment,
"the true artists like ourselves" lol from cheesecake man who uses just as much photo ref as Greg Land

In over 30 years of artwork, I don’t think I have ever traced a figure and passed it off as my own; though I have traced pieces like a gun as recent as a few years ago (I know better now). Yes, I’ve use photo reference a lot in the past and still occasionally render a copy of an admired artist/image to better understand the line work and technique (but NEVER try to pass this off as my own or usually even post it anywhere). In fact, you can see from my early works about all I did was renderings from photographs. When I had the opportunity, 11 years ago, to be mentored by one of Disney’s Feature Animators he referred to me as a “Xerox artist”. Ouch!

Since that time I’ve worked extremely hard to learn anatomy, proportion, foreshortening, lighting, etc. Now I’ve worked up to the point where I only use references when I’m struggling with a particularly difficult angle or when a reference is provided for a sketch group. Granted, I still have a long way to go. Hell, I serve on the board of a publishing firm; if I thought my stuff was good enough to publish, it would already be out there!

Now while the title “Cheesecake Man” is a bit catchy, normally I would ignore the anonymous personal attack from the cowardly individual mentioned above; actually thinking it was kind of cute that he/she thought their opinion would matter to me. However, in this case, their comment did strike a chord. At times, I do like to draw cheesecake or pin-up art, but I like to think that my drawings, paintings and sculpture speak to a much higher level of craftsmanship. Perhaps I’m giving myself too much credit. It angers me that this individual has made me doubt myself. On the other hand, perhaps thanks are in order as it may be time to reevaluate myself as an artist

You know, the more I thought about it, the funnier it became. I know exactly who and what I am as an artist and where I'm heading. Ignorant comments shouldn't get to me, however it did inspire me to create a new avatar:

Thanks Bat! I don't remember which issue I referenced for the pic, but I think it was one of Jim Lee's. Couple of fun facts, I had to repaint it several times because at Mach 1 the paint kept burning/peeling off. The one you see here was done with Testor's model paint and it held up really well! I even got to go up for a flight for painting this and a couple others. Nothing compares!

Hey Loston, yeah I just scribbled some black spots and then used the Twirl effect. Seemed to deliver pretty much what I was after, though I was wondering if I should have done a white twirl on a black background due to the color of her legs.
