I haven't picked up a pencil in nearly 15 years. I've recently started a sketchbook to shake off the rust and hopefully improve.
Crits and comments are of course welcome.

Studying folds got me thinking about Bryan Singer's last Superman flick. In Singer's first X-men movie, the characters joke about how ridiculous they would look in spandex. Yet in Superman Returns, Singer opts to put Superman in spandex, with greased hair and spit curl. It just seemed out of place for a modern film. I thought Supes needed updating. Perhaps he needs updating in the comics as well.
Just playing around with the Superman's look. A quick sketch with a different haircut and looser clothes, but still trying to keep the general feel of the character. Didn't come out the way I intended, but whatever. That's what practice is for. :D

Instead of using a light box, I sketched in blue pencil directly on the bristol for the next page of my test sequence. I found I don't like doing it this way because I feel too tenative, like I can't make mistakes.

I recently was informed that one can download full size penciled pages from John Byrne's website. Very cool for practice.
I inked a couple panels for warm-up this evening on a 15 year old brush I found in my art bin. I sucked at inking back in the day and I still do. The hatching and hair need work, but it was fun trying to get line variation on the metal guy (I forget his name from Doom Patrol).

We have something in common, I stopped drawing for at least ten years. I was in a bad relationship where my artwork was not too encouraged so I gave it up. When I eventually left her, my next girlfriend encouraged me to draw again. After I left her, my next girlfriend who eventually became my wife pushes me to draw regularly so in the past two years I've actually gotten a little bit better.
Your stuff is great.

I think if 15 years ago the internet was as pervasive as it is now, I probably never would have stopped drawing. The tips and tricks, as well as feedback from other artists I get nowadays from this site and others on the web, are simply invaluable and keep me from feeling stagnated.

Thanks Kris.
I've recently been working at trying to get the hang of using a brush. I use a Windsor Newton Series 7 #2 brush and a Raphael Kolinsky 8404 #2 ---- depending on which one is dry after cleaning --- but they're both pretty much the same.
The Buscema pic was all brush, but the Indian Warrior was half brush, half digital (a first time experiment). I did the Indian figure with a brush, scanned it, and completed the background in MangaStudio. It's just so much easier to do vanishing points on the computer, but I still prefer the brush line to the digital line for figures.

^ Thanks, literacysuks1 :)
To answer your question, for quick inking I use a Pitt brush pen... but the lines I get from it are a little too fat to go beyond simple sketching.
When I take my time (like in the last post), I use a Raphael Kolinsky 8408 brush and Speedball Super Black ink. The 8408 is an awesome brush that I can't recommend enough. The lines it produces are sharp and I feel more in control than with other brushes. I also use Strathmore 500 series bristol with a smooth plate finish. The paper really makes a difference for me. The 100% cotton rag sops up brushed strokes nicely but it's a little flimsy compared to other boards.

For some reason the hairy guy on the right seems familiar to me. What's the project?
Repo Man
05-31-2008, 08:53 PM
^ Thanks, Ryan.
The giant hairy guy on the right is named Vadric. He's probably familiar because I've been drawing him in various forms through-out my sketch blog -- trying to nail him down. Hopefully I haven't subconsciously swiped him from somewhere.
The working title for the project is "Banestone," but that'll probably change as I believe that term is used in a fantasy novel and maybe even a video game per google research. It's just a rock 'em sock 'em fantasy based story --- but non-Tolkein, so no elves, dwarves, etc. Some of the creatures will seem familiar but their origins and interactions will hopefully have a different twist.
But I'm so slow I'll be dead before I ever get an issue off the ground. :skull:
Ryan.Smith
05-31-2008, 09:22 PM
I know that feeling. :D
I think that's why I'm so adamant about putting together sequentials now, even though I'm not at that "professional level" yet. I feel like I'm at least doing SOMETHING towards that lofty goal of putting something out.
Have you done any sequentials with these guys yet? I'd love to see 'em if you have. ;)
Repo Man
05-31-2008, 10:39 PM
^ Yeah, I've seen the New Warriors (that's the name, right?) pages you post over in sequentials. Good stuff. You have a natural flare for story telling.
Funny, but I'm the opposite. I'm slowly working my way up toward sequentials, but I've gotta do stuff like height charts and tweak the characters and then I never feel I'm ready.:D
But hopefully I'll get there. I've just been drawing for a year (after a 15 year hiatus) so this year my goal was to get comfortable with inking (something I was never able to do in the past). Hopefully by summer I'll get some sequentials together.
But then again I'll probably delay and do another height chart before I start... ;)

Oh..Kane Kosugi as reference. Only remembered him as a kid under his dad's shadow. He still kicked ass. Sho Kosugi is THE ninja of movies :). Revenge of the Ninja being the most memorable.
If I could offer some tips, (it may seem nitpicky) just add a curve to the bottom of his left forefinger. It's even in the photo reference. It just gives the hand a more corrected form. But the thing that alerted me the most was his right wrist that you confused with his shoulder in the photo reference. As it stands it looks too wide.
I know we shouldn't be slaves to the reference but it helps clarify forms.

Ah very good ad as always I see Golden age influence there!
My only point , but just a very small detail, problably the 3D effect could imèprove overlapping the Hat with the man body a bit (just my opinion).
Keep up the very good work!

I'll buy this board just for the running pose of the knight in panel 1! If you add some cool king pose and hot chick....:lml-:

I see what you are saying - pull back the "camera." I used too many close-ups on this page probably. And sorry, but you can't buy any of my boards --- because they don't exist! It's all digital. ;)
I know you were joking, but if I had any boards I would give you one for free just for helping me out these past few months. But just one. :D

Ok, a weird crit: the floor keeps changing. In some panels it looks like hardwood floors and others it looks like large stone slabs. The texture and crevasses need some work to really put the reader into the environment.

Not a weird crit at all, Alex. Fact is, I have no idea what I'm doing background-wise. I'm trying to learn the perspective rulers in Manga Studio and I'm just throwing stuff in that fits around the characters and hoping I can squeeze it through under the radar. Aparently not. I'll work harder on that next time.
I really appreciate the crit, my friend.

Haha...you took it up several notches. I'm glad that you read the pot was a cauldron and not a pot belly.
