I thought I would start a sketch blog, so here goes. Here are some muscle studies I did from Flex magazine bodybuilder types:

My advice for you is to learn your structure for anatomy before you go in and do the finishes. Alot of your weaknesses lie in your structure area.

I always look forward to hearing from you Juan. If you are talking about "Good Guy", say, what specifically is wrong about the anatomical structure?
As you can see, I've been using muscle mags to try and get the anatomy more accurate.

Juan nailed your biggest problem when you draw - you need better understructure, and a better understanding of the muscles (how they look on the body, under the skin). Your stuff is good, it just needs a little refining and a little tweaking. As Chris Hart wrote in one of his "how to draw comics" books, "It's not one big thing, but a lot of small things that make the biggest difference". You're not forgetting to add shoulders or something like that; you know what the body has, but I dont think you know exactly how some stuff looks underneath the skin - and thats what you need to know. Just grab an anatomy book and study up. Keep practicing too!

Spend some time focusing less on the muscles and more on the bones underneath the muscles. Draw some really skinny dudes and you'll see what I mean. Before you can hang all that muscle mass on a character, you need to have the bones underneath it down.

Okay -- here is the deal. I went out back with a cigar, a beer, and the Who's (first) final concert DVD (1982) and did some REALLY quick sketches. We are talking 10 minutes, tops, for each one. Then it got too dark to draw. Just an exercise for laughs. Interested to see what people think.

Hey Jedi
The back leg looks stumpy ... I think it is the lower calf that is the main problem ... it is too short. I know that it is suppose to be in he background ... but it is simply two small/short. Also, I think that your waist may be slanted the wrong way as well ... instead of slanting down ... I think it should come up. However ... I like this effort the head has more depth then your second attempt.

What kind of paper did you buy, jedi? A lot of the stuff sold inside of "sketch pads" isn't actually well suited for drawing and erasing. Even regular bond copy paper is better.

Sorry to take so long to reply. It was a Canson Sketch pad. In retrospect, working on a surface that can't be erased has its advantages as a training tool, but in general -- bleh.
