Figured I'd start a blog where I have all my artwork I've ever created as a member of this site posted in chronological order, or at least a summary. Starting with the first bit of art I posted working up to now and then posting everything I'll do in the future in this thread. Mostly out of curiousity to look at how I've progressed and let people see stuff they might have missed all in one place.
So here it goes...

Holy jesus that's a lot of drawing in one go. What sparked this?
Part of it was that I just moved, was looking through all of my art over the past 6 years and it gave me a renewed feeling. I wanted to chronicle that and also use it as a catalyst for a new beginning... which is why I started a new blog. I'm feeling motivated and want to keep the energy going.
The overwhelming feeling I have right now is that I haven't drawn nearly enough over the past 5-6 years and I need to make up for lost time. If I had been dedicated to my craft over that time I feel I'd be working in comics right now.
I signed on to draw the first episode of Everforce for PJU and that's where it'll start. Then I have a project with Ugga Bugga that I'll hit hard after that. You guys are going to see production out of me that you haven't seen before. And that's starting now. Any art posted in this thread from this point forward will be brand new.

Being new to this forum and seeing all these pieces for the first time, I'm very surprised that you aren't working in comics now. Awesome stuff.

Sure is fun seeing some of these pieces again, Dave! I remember how busy some of your older work was--all those leaves and details that you really didn't need. You've come a LONG way, man! You've refined and streamlined your work tremendously over the years!
I've always watched your posts, whether I posted or not, and I've always been impressed with your artwork, man. But your attitude is equally impressive. You helped to make CRITICAL MASS a joy, and your valuable feedback and input on PJ has always helped make this place special. I just wanted you to know that.

Loston, It's fun to look back and see progress... but it's also interesting to look back and notice some of the repeated mistakes I am prone to make. Need to work on my architecture and explore more unique composition and layout. Looking at it all together I've noticed that there are lots of repeated patterns.

Great collection of work here Dave and glad to see you becoming so motivated. Something must be in the water because I have recently had a fire lit under me also, starting in August (once I begin my new job) I am really going to get serious about my art for once.

Regarding the Everforce page: Flipping the legs on the flying figure was an EXCELLENT decision, Dave. It works far better than in your rough. I think the guy's eyes are a little too close together though. If his right eye were moved a little bit to the viewer's left, I think the page would be better for it. Trust me on this one. ;)
The figures in the inset panels might be a little too small. You'll drive yourself nuts doing all those tiny full body shots, so zoom in the camera a little on at least one more of the panels. The variety of figure sizes will add extra interest to the art as a whole. Right now, all your eggs are in the basket of the large flying figure. Make the inset panels count a little more.
Keep posting more stuff, man! It's great work!

Thanks Manji, motivation comes from strange places. I have alot of negative forces working against me in my day to day life right now. Years ago my art was a stress reliever when things were tough and I am trying to get back to that. Make a negative situation a positive one. If things are destructive all around me, it's up to me to be constructive to balance that out.
Look forward to seeing what you have in store, man. :)

Thanks Loston, I agree on all points. I've fixed the eyes this morning before I went to work because it was getting on my nerves as I was brushing my teeth. Heh...
I see what you mean about the small figures as well. I'll see what I can do about switching up some of the views. The one panel where earth is prominent, maybe I can have his head coming in looking at it instead of him hovering in the middle of the panel.
I'm also switching the panel above that to a close up headshot.

Thanks man :) working on some thumbnails now for the next page. I really need more time to draw. Have too much going on and it's starting to frustrate me that I don't have good chunks of time to settle down and actually get into what I'm doing.
The treatment you give to the image with your pencils makes the inking stage pretty unnecessary IMO. Dale Keown, which I can sense is an influence of yours, did this when he came back to comics (with The darkness i Think), and his art never looked better.
I'm saying this because the inked battlescene is pretty hard to read /decyphrate, whereas your pencil work is crystal clear.
Very solid work in any case.
dfbovey
10-31-2007, 11:06 PM
Thanks Jel!
Keown is definitely an influence. I was trying to develop a process along the same lines as that in order to save time from having to ink things myself, or the expense of having to hire or find one for future projects. So that you say that means I'm heading in the right direction. I still have a long ways to go to perfect it though.

That's a great drawing. I think anytime you tilt the "camera" effectively you can really pull the viewer into the drawing successfully. It helps give the viewer a little bit of vertigo in this case.

I know how you feel. I lose track of time when I get really into it. Been a few times where I look out the window and see the sun coming up! And with no sleep, I head out to my day job. :)
Only today it's not about drawing. Just got a new kitten and he decided he was going to dig under my pillow to try to play with my hands all night. And when he was done doing that he would pounce on my feet! I think I got about 2 hours of sleep.

Since Mark Farmer is out of my price range and I don't have the time to ink this myself.... I'll probably be cleaning this up a bit so that it stands on it's own without inks and go straight to color.
I'll probably be looking to collaborate with a colorist as well if anyone is interested.

As I said several times (I'm getting old) it's very intersting to see the work you did with just graphite...I know it's the same approach you have with splash or pin ups, but seeing it applied in seq pages is really interesting.
Do you write it by your own?

That running guy is collapsing, right Dave? I love the way you drew that fist in the foreground, and I know his hand was in a fist as he was running, but I think it would sell it a bit more if his fingers were extended. Sorta like he was trying to break the fall or grasping for something. Otherwise it almost looks like a punch when you first see the panel.

Was diggin through some boxes... found some art from 10 years ago. Self Published venture. Kinda fun to look through that stuff and see how cruddy it was. This is actually one of the better pages.
Character was called Crucifix. Was a mix between the Crow, Batman and Jules from Pulp Fiction. His father was a corrupt preacher who was murdered... basically giving him a reason to go around killing mafia members while quoting passages of the bible as the blood goes everywhere. I always thought the character could have been something cool and toy around with the idea of updating it ever so often.

The only thing that caught my eye is her left knee. The way it's shaded makes it look like her leg/knee is flat and just curved like a bent piece of metal. Showing a little more of the circle on her armour would probably clear that up.

Yep, very nice, not sure about the cape though, doesn't seem thick enough, to be draping so much in a free fall... But I don't have any alternative suggestion, apart from maybe going for a straighter and more iconic route, à la Sal Velluto in the 90s comic? Plus I think I remember MK used to use his cape to glide a little.

05-19-2009, 12:41 PM
Was asked a few questions at another forum and figured I'd post a quick description of the watercolor process for that Tarzan piece.
For the motion blur, I laid down puddles of color and then pulled a really large dry brush through the puddles. Just repeated the process in layers and different shades until I got it exactly how I wanted it.
The rest is pretty much standard glazing technique where you lay down puddles, let them dry before putting down a new layer.
And the water splashing was done with pro white ink and water. Flicking the brush handle to create splatter of white. And then I tapped some spots out with the tip up my finger.
Some details like the snakes teeth and the water coming off it's head were also done with pro white and brush.
Background behind the snake was done by laying down a layer of yellow, letting it dry and then added layers of green over top of it, and smeared it with a paper towel while the green layer was still wet.
Any smearing or dry brush techniques were done with motion in mind, whether it be Tarzan's running motion or the motion of the snake. I tried to make it as fluid as possible to give it a cinematic feel.

This piece is looking awesome Dave. Great movement, yet again. Since you're still working on it, I think some more definition on the leg/hoof of the foreground horse would really help. I stared at it for a while before I realized what I was looking at. I think roughing in some shadow to define the underside of the hoof would be all that you really need. And if you can deepen the blue sky to the right of the leg, that would really separate it, and match the rest of the sky too.

Did you scan this differently or did you add more warm tones (reds) to the horses? I ask because the ogre/troll REALLY stands out now. I see the added detail in the foreground horse hoof and the added speed blur - that really helps frame the ogre as well. Is this for round 3?

Yeah, I think it's just that some of the techniques I try to pull off with a pencil are much easier and quicker to do with watercolor and color pencil techniques. Like the blur effects, and just filling large areas with textures.

Yep, this is for my battle against G0b1in. Can't wait to see what he comes up with!
I darkened the horse in the foreground, rendered a bit more of the details of the hoof, added a little bit more color between the foreground horse's legs and added a tiny bit more shading to the Cyclop's face. I scanned it slightly larger because I was getting some feedback that some couldn't make out the Cyclop's face. But other than that, it's scanned the same with no other adjustments.
Nice!

I really like it, think maybe the water could use a bit more of a blue or green tint, I know you're kinda going for the whole dirty water dirty place blend together look but it just blends a bit too much I think.
dfbovey
06-14-2009, 08:31 PM
Thanks TK!
Well, not only is the water dirty... but it's also kind of a sunset shot. And if you google images of sunsets over rivers, the water takes on the color of the sky. Adding blue would kind of go against what I'm trying to establish. If it's not clear, I'd have to think of another solution besides adding blue.
Here's more progress:
http://www.davidbovey.com/images/fisherman-1-1.jpg
hadesillustrations
06-14-2009, 08:39 PM
The water ripples are long - it makes them look more like sand instead of water, though I get the idea. I think reducing the size and increasing the number of ripples/peaks in the water would get more of a liquid feel across. Also, adding an extreme highlight for the sun's reflection in the water would add to the water effect. In fact, reflections all around should really be added - you have some for the rock formations in the foreground, but the canoe and huts in the middle ground have no reflections in the water. I know you're going for the "everything orange" look, but those reflections still exist, even in that lighting.
That said, I really like the mood of this piece. I have SO much trouble with color - I envy your painting skill. Well done!

06-14-2009, 08:48 PM
Thanks Alex! Good suggestions!
One thing I need to work on if I'm going to illustrate an entire comic this way, is painting small. That's part of the reason the water strokes are too long, is this painting is much smaller than my normal size. Probably need to work with smaller brushes. This is only 5x11 inches.

That is awesome.
One thing that usually throws me a bit with your work (and it's a preference thing, so I've never commented on it) is that I usually find the musculature to a be a bit too harshly defined. That's not the case in this piece, where I really think you've hit the sweet spot. It's especially impressive considering the harsh lighting. I love the volume in the clouds too - just great work man - awesome stuff.
After glazing for a while to it, and being nearly blinded by how cool it is, I noticed a small something: the breasts don't really react to gravity nor to Storm's speed... They are more as if the girl was laying on her back. It's not distracting, but fixing it could enhance the piece even more.
dfbovey
06-16-2009, 07:26 AM
Jel - Thanks man! This is 99% watercolor with a couple minor things that I enhanced in photoshop. I agree that it's probably my best, and it needed to be for the championship round :) I see what you're saying about the boobs. I kinda thought that her outstretched arms would flatten them out a bit, especially since they aren't proportionately large ones.
Krikkit, I agree with you about my tendencies. I think it's especially prominent when I draw male figures... but I try to taper that back a bit when I draw women. Something I'm trying to be more conscious of in general though. Thanks!
Alex, I love you too man! :D Can't wait to see what you came up with.

Hey Dave, I don't know if you have any interest in an overpaint for that fisherman piece, so if it's not cool with you, let me know and I'll take it down.
Otherwise, something like this might help separate the land and water while keeping the same mood and color scheme that you are going for:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/krikkit13/fisherman-overpaint.jpg
All I did was add the below greens in photoshop set to Multiply with an opacity of 56%:

You're extremely good with watercolors so you could probably do something similar that way, without resorting to digital. I hope this helps.

Jel - I kinda thought that her outstretched arms would flatten them out a bit, especially since they aren't proportionately large ones.
Oh definitely, but the detail that makes them appear as if she were laying on her back is the shadow rim you placed, as is they had this flattened egg shape boobs have when girls are on their back... getting rid of them would change everything I think. I can do an overlay if you want.

I think it's excellent but I see some of the pencil and inked pieces and I guess I feel nostalgic since a lot of it inspired me so much when I started out here.
So, where will we be able to pick up this comic you and Uga are making? Love the sketches for the next page.

Thanks guys :)
Alfred, I definitely enjoy doing both... and you'll probably still see me do plenty of pencils. The comic is just easier to do this way and I think the painted feel will really suit the subject matter nicely.

Fantastic update the colours in the second one are amazing too! I like how you set warm ones (yellow/orange) and more cold for the magic stuff (green ish). Can't wait to see the whole page

Love the coloring techniques you use, Bovey! Nice sense of mysticism that comes off with a realistic touch. Tough to pull off, but you have done a great job!

I almost wish you hadn't outlined the hand the energy is emanating from - it would've really pushed the light source even further. Great work Dave!

Thanks Bat! I've been thinking about doing some kinda documented video about my process at some point. Video tutorials on watercolor techniques and other processes like the prisma and turp technique. Just have to figure out how to carve out the time for it. Or if it would be something people would have interest in to begin with.

Back to doing a bit of pencils. Feels a little goofy after all the color stuff I've been doing lately.

Very good work Dave. I like the Venom face in foreground a lot!But the thing I really dig on this pic is the difference between the Rhino brutal approach and the Spidey one. They very reflect the characters nature. It's a good sample of body language

Thanks! Probably not. If I take it any further I might ink it, and then maybe let someone else take a stab at digital colors over it.

Doing a little bit of conceptualizing right now. Hope to resume page work this weekend.
Been extremely busy with the new house this week. Having a family get together this weekend, lots of family coming over who haven't seen the house yet. Had a lot of walls to paint, pictures to hang... and so on.

Eyes are one of the things that I usually don't have to reference unless I'm doing a portrait of someone specific and need to get a likeness.
