I've recently decided to draw through Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing From Life. I'm hoping to do a page a day.

My computer's been broken for a few weeks and I only had a PDF of the book on here, not a paper copy, so I couldn't continue. But now I've got my computer up and running again, so I'm going to start this back up. Here's another page I did weeks ago and never got to scan in:

http://www.scottewenart.com/bridgman/002.jpg

Instead of continuing these sketches, I decided to draw out of a couple nude pose books I have ("The Figure in Motion" and "The Nude Figure"). Here are sketches from that:

Oh snap! Well, this whole sketch blog is going to be linked, then. This is about me learning anatomy and thus drawing nudes.

bridgmans!!!

sweet, keep doing those drawings, every day.

Yeah, I spend about an hour every day doing these (or at least I try to). A lot of people I went to school with did these and say they help a lot with anatomy. I'm 30 pages in to this 300 page book, so this'll probably take me a while.

Nice character design. I can see the balance in the figures (Bridgman at work?)

How are the Bridgman's going? I tried something like that with Hogarth's Dynamic Figure Drawing but lost interest fairly quickly.

How are the Bridgman's going? I tried something like that with Hogarth's Dynamic Figure Drawing but lost interest fairly quickly.

I still do the Bridgman drawings every day, but I usually wait until I have a bunch of them and then scan 'em in all at once. So right now I probably have between 5-10 pages of Bridgman sketches I haven't scanned in yet.

I would highly recommend drawing through the book. I've never read Hogarth, but these Bridgman sketches are really helping. I've only been at it since... June, I think? But I can already see a dramatic improvement in my figure drawing.

ScottEwen
10-17-2007, 08:48 PM
Oh, and one other thing, about losing interest in it... I had a hard time keeping at this when I first started doing it, but I kept at it and after a couple months, it just became routine. I sit down at my desk every morning and pull out my sketchbook, and start doing Bridgman drawings. I don't even think about it anymore, you just need to get into a routine and it'll become a lot easier.

^ I know that Jack Hamm book backwards and forwards. I've had the same copy for twenty years! I've never been much into Bridgeman - not because I don't like what he has to offer, but because I just haven't been exposed to his stuff much. But looking at what you've done in this thread I just may have to pick up a copy of the book your working from.

Pssh, no. I had to memorize all these muscles at the Kubert School and I don't remember any of 'em.

Thanks, but like I told Bryan, all these drawings are just copied out of a book. You'd probably be better off going to the original source and picking up your own copy (http://www.amazon.com/Bridgmans-Complete-Guide-Drawing-Life/dp/0806930152/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1228679290&sr=8-1); although I'm attempting to get as close as I can to the original, I know I have made mistakes and I'd hate for someone to copy those mistakes.

You should also consider that I have almost 200 pages done so far with many more to come. It'd probably be cheaper to pick up the $12 book than to print out all my sketches.

Knowing me, I'll do three pages, than quit, but its a start.

That's awesome, Ugga! Don't give up... when I started out I found it difficult to find time to do a page every day, but after a month or two it became part of my daily routine. Wake up, roll out of bed, crack open the sketchbook and fill one page with Bridgman sketches. I don't think I've missed a day now in months. I treat it as my warm-up every day before I start working, and it has become necessary in my mind; it has to be done before I start work.

I will see what I can do.

My interest is in cartooning more than anything. However, I feel I really need to learn the basics of anatomy, to learn how to properly exaggerate them.

I have a crapload to learn.

Absolutely. My interest in drawing is not at all to be super-realistic, but I feel it's necessary to learn at least basic anatomy and proportions if you're going to do comic art. The more familiar you are with this stuff the easier it is to exaggerate without it looking wrong.

I think what's helped me more than anything, though, is having to draw a superhero comic. Prior to getting hired on the book I'm drawing right now, I was doing webcomics about zombies or high school kids. When I drew an arm it was essentially a tube; but over the past few months I've had to draw convincing muscles in various angles and poses. It's very difficult for someone like me that doesn't have the experience of drawing lots of superheroes, but I think I've learned quite a lot from doing it.

Ugga Bugga

Throughout my life, I have been able to get chuckles from my art, because it is silly, and fun - and the humor has made the lack of art quality less noticeable - to people who would see it.

Before I arrived here, I never realized how much I needed to learn to get my art to the next level.

Being surrounded by accomplished, and truly talented people, I realize that either I can have my art be the same for the rest of my life, or I can try to push and get it somewhere new and exciting.

I hope this lasts, and I know I get busy with stuff, and don't always have time.

However back to the basics for Uggs, is the plan for now. Then I can add some quality to the silly.

Other sketches go in this thread, but I hardly ever do any sketches other than Bridgmans. I wake up in the morning and do one page of Bridgman sketches out of the book. Then I work on Titus, or if I don't have any Titus pages to work on, my new webcomic The Bar. Unfortunately, because of a non-disclosure agreement, I can't post anything from Titus until it's published. All pages and sketches and roughs from The Bar go in the Sequential Art lab (here are the first four pages, f'r instance (http://penciljack.com/forum/showthread.php?t=90429)).

So, I don't really have time to do any sketches other than this stuff.

Since there was a request for non-Bridgman sketches, here are the roughs for a Christmas present I'm doing right now for my sister-in-law (we're celebrating Christmas on Sunday because my brother just got back from Afghanistan). It's a picture of her three dogs. I'll put up the reference in a few minutes, once I upload it to my website.

This is my first time drawing dogs, and I'm unfamiliar with how they're put together so this is a bit tough. But there's so little time until I have to give it to her that I'm not going to obsess over details, just try to do the best I can in the short time I have. It's my own fault I waited so long to do this, but oh well.

Hey Scott :)
is this section on how close drap an pull?

It took me a couple tries to figure out that sentence, but I think you mean "how clothes drape and pull," correct? ;)

Anyway, yeah, this section of the book, which I think is the last section, is all about clothing and draping, which is an area I need a lot of help in.

I'm getting close to the end of the book now, and I have a Loomis book lined up to draw from when I'm done, but since I've been drawing out of the Bridgman book for two years now, I think I'm going to take a couple months off and just draw a character sketch every day for warm-ups instead. Y'know, Batman one day, Hulk the next day, etc.

Just checked the book. Yeah, it's all clothing folds from this point on.

I decided this was such a good idea that I couldn't wait. I wrote down about 40 characters I want to draw, and I did a quick (less than an hour) Harry Potter.

Since Titus #1 is going on sale soon, I thought I'd post my five favorite pages from the issue. All these pages were done months ago, so I didn't think I should put them in the Sequential Art lab for critiques.

is that ben up there Ben Gibbard?

and awesome titus pages, you're pulling off the superhero thing with flying colors, and as always, your inking makes it all shine.

Thanks man. Nope, not Ben Gibbard, although I based a character off him for a comic pitch I did a couple years ago that never got picked up. The Ben there is Ben Folds, hence the "types of Folds" joke. ;)

Gettin' close to the end here. I think there's maybe two sketchbook pages worth of drawings left in this book for me.

Well, this is it. I overestimated, I guess, but this page is the last of my Bridgman sketches. I started on June 18, 2007 and finished today, February 16, 2009. That's almost exactly 20 months. It took up 238 pages in an 8.5"x11" sketchbook, and 13 pages in an 11"x14" sketchbook, for 251 pages total (although a handful of those pages were drawn out of other books, I don't know how many pages were solely Bridgman sketches).

http://www.scottewenart.com/bridgman/251.jpg

So now, like I said a couple pages ago, I'm going to draw a few of my favorite characters for a while and then start in on a Loomis book. Maybe in a couple years I'll try drawing through this book again and seeing if I can't improve upon my first attempt.
