Can you believe that they are going to make Galactus a storm cloud (http://www.aintitcool.com/node/32330) in the new Fantastic Four movie? This takes suckiness to a whole new level.

This isn't going to make a lot of people happy. As someone who has been reading comics for three decades, I've come to the conclusion that people today love superheroes, but they're a little ashamed of the fact that they do, so there's a whole movement to update and modernize everything about superheroes to meet post-modern aesthics. Costumes and other classic superhero trappings are thought to be "goofy", "hokey", and "uncool" by many post-modern "fans" of comics. The whole "comics-should-be-more-realistic-and-make-sense" movement is also proof of this. How ridiculous this notion is! The X-MEN movie-uniforms instead of costumes, the post-modern take on the Hulk origin in the THE HULK film, Batman wearing plate armor and wearing ninja-blades on his forearms. Yep. how about the darker colors on the Superman costume? Or the idea that instead of doing a "hokey" Superman show, we do SMALLVILLE instead, where we don't have to be as ashamed to watch each week because he won't have to wear tights! Or HEROES, where all the characters are just regular joes who have powers, dressing like regular folk. No suits or nothing to make us feel the material might be below us, right?.

I think it's all comes down to people being ashamed to like superheroes and comics on some level, folks, and I really think that's the REAL shame. The comic book audience is now an older demographic, and how many times must we hear about the audiences being "more grown-up" and "mature" as a justification for watering down superheroes? So let me get this straight... More ultra-graphic violent content and foul language is perceived as being "awesome", and "imaginative", and "thought provoking"? LOL! I guess that's the audience maturity I keep hearing and reading so much about!

Superhero comics by their very nature have always been about high-FANTASY and the fantastic. That is where the element of ESCAPE comes in. Personally, I think this IS superheroes at their level best. I'm perfectly willing to suspend my disbelief in order to simply be entertained! I don't feel like I need a rationalization as to why Batman wears his batsuit, or why he has a big bat on his chest! He's Batman. Got it! This path of over-thinking superheroes undermines the entertainment valued, in my opinion. I guess some would like to think that Batman is cooler if he's wearing bodyarmor instead of tights, because tights don't = manliness, right? But rationalizing superheroes sure can be a nutty little Pandora's Box. There's a lot of snowball effect from over-thinking something that is essentiall pure fantasty. Let's see... If Batman wears armor, then one would have to rationalize how Batman could swing around while wearing it. How such an armor could be flexible. amd how it could be bulletproof, and still fit under his clothing. Etc. Goofy as hell, this line of logic and thinking. Batman is fantasy. Too much real = more ridiculousness. To me, all that over-thinking leads to ideas that are a lot GOOFIER than him having tights in the first place.

Suspending my disbelief has never been much of a problem for me. I'm okay with guys like Galactus showing up in comics and in film wearing big helmets, costumes and all that. Costumes and superpowers go together. It's much of the charm of superheroes.

As far as Galactus in the FF 2 goes, I'm sorry to see that Hollywood has once again waffled and let the their shame of superheroes muddle their decision making. I really don't get the desire to do "the Galactus story" without--DUH, Galactus! :( Seems to me if they were ashamed of him, they'd want to have gone with a different storyline and villain. This move to make Galactus a cloud might please many post-modern comic fans and general audiences, but it's also assured to displease many others. Too bad. The one chance we get to see Galactus on the big-screen lost to creating-by-committee. Yay, Hollywood.

Revising Galactus into a cloud is wonderfully dull! Only the minds of Hollywood executive material could come up with something so utterly unsatisfying and lame! I should just be thankful that the Surfer looks like the Surfer at all, I guess, considering.

Loston,
not ashamed of his imagination.

Making Galactus walk around might cost too much. I would love to have seen it though. I think the og Galactus story is probably the most celebrated Marvel Comics Storyline that the company has. I have gotten to the point where anything the comic biz does to get media attention or try to gain the love of those that wouldnt give them the time of day doesnt really bother me anymore. I havent picked up a single comic since they killed off Captain America. I also have dulled my opinion about hollywood altering comic movies to please the Millions that dont wanna be associated with comic fans and still be entertained by the content that comic fans keep alive on a daily basis. This business has simply moved on without me. Oh well.

I may not even bother going to see the movie now. I had enough issues with the first one, especially Dr. Doom but I felt Jessica Alba's portrayal of Sue in spirit and personality pulled it out of the gutter. I'm not sure it's enough to pull me back for a second time.

Although the first movie was not impressive and the dialog pretty poor, it was watchable. We should argue the case with pics. Budget or not, what a cop out.

How can you not make Galactus work ?

Augh. Storm cloud? C'mon!

The most feared planet destroying force in the universe - and a gust of wind could end it all!

Wow.

Next thing you know Nick Fury'll be an advanced AI in the SHIELD mainframe! Yeesh.

I'd gladly have taken the short-pants version of Galactus than a damn cloud. An atmospheric disturbance doesn't spell 'end of days' to me like a dude who could pop the moon like a Mentos.

*sigh*

Loston,
not ashamed of his imagination.

i agree with you loston, but at the same time i can see that not everyone is ashamed of comics. for example i'm not the least bit ashamed of comics. i love thor, red cape and winged helmet and all. spider man, the thing.. it doesn't matter i still dig them. at the same time, i'm sick of seeing superheroes. the idea that everyone has to have powers or a costume is worn out to me. i've been reading those types of stories for 24 years now and i'm ready for something else.

i'm also perfectly aware that when i see a movie about my favorite comic franchise it's not being made for me. it's some director's interpretation of the story, not the story i'm used to. i know there is going to be artistic license used and i'd no sooner tell a director how to make his/her movie than i'd want to have him/her tell me how to make my drawings. i may not like where they take the story, but that doesn't mean that they shouldn't have the right to tell it. my best examples are the spiderman and hulk movies. the comic nerd in me bristled at all of the changes, but at the same time i was able to enjoy them for what they were, not what i thought they should be. spiderman 3 was a bit hard to swallow though, and i think raimi finally pushed it too far with that one. but still, i was able to enjoy parts of it. life isn't always going to be just how we want it so it's important that we can still take it as it comes instead of resisting change simply because it isn't what we would have liked to have seen. at the end of the day, the movies won't ever change the stories that i did enjoy. i can always go back to them and enjoy them at any time.

Storm Cloud Galactus is stupid.

If they thought the old design looked cheesy on film (which i could see the argument for), a friend of mine suggested they go with something along the lines of the Celestials from the Gaiman/JRJR Eternals series. Just a huge solid mass of cosmic metal.

Is there an Ultimates Galactus (Gah lak tus) or something that's not a man but like a swarm of thousands of ships?

Maybe "cloud" is a euphemism for "swarm."

That looks a lot like that shadow we saw in the preview passing in front of Saturn.

As far as Galactus being a storm cloud, has it been confirmed that he will be one for the WHOLE movie? Isn't he supposed to be an abstract being until he comes in contact with a race and then takes on the form that causes fear to that race?
So if he's in space would he NOT have a form?
Anyways, I say let's just get over it, i mean, Dr Doom for F41 was horrid, and y'all are complaining about Galactus bah.

I was gonna ask the same thing. Do we know that the cloud is him and that's that? Or is it that he's a cloud as we can see him at this point and as he gets closer to us, he becomes what we know of as Galactus. I mean it's not really a menacing thing to see some guy floating in space with a big purple head. But a vast nebula storm that's heading our way sure is a hell of a lot more concerning.
