Ok everyone I have a double feature this week. Why you ask? Simple I want to get pencils moving and everybody thinking about character designs, concepts and most importantly get an idea that you can take to a finished piece.

Now I am sure most of you know about the 100 artists project (http://www.penciljack.com/forum/showthread.php?t=75933) that Xadrian is heading up. I am hoping this week's sketch group will help some of you who are looking for character ideas for the project. Even if you aren't signed up still push yourself and who knows a slot may even open up and boom! You will already have an idea or maybe even a finished piece.

However, if you aren't looking to be totally involved with a character idea from start to finish and you just wanna sketch out something for this week feel free. I really look forward to seeing what we call come up with. Remember you can do one or both of the ideas this week. Anyway enough of my mouth here are this week's ideas.

RL-35 the last soldier of project blue team.

and/or

Ginger the female assassin who likes spiders, loves knives but hates you.

I don't know...this is what I came up with for the idea of this week's assignment. I just wanted a different type of soldier than your standard run and gun guy.

Here's a sketch of RL-35. The design is all over the place, but I kinda like it.

Yeah, I was kind of paying out Rob Liefeld and paying homage to him at the same time. It's better to tell a story with a sketch than doing a straight out character sketch. Krikkit's entry last week helps illustrate that point.

Reanimated lifeform-35, last mercenary to face decomposition, and first to retain memories prior to reanimation. bad news for the blue team.

Final piece. (I linked it cos theres sort of a bewbie thing going on)

By the by.....I want to post this in the other labs for actual crits, but I dont know which one my methods fall under, since I am using inks, but its not really like traditionally inked work. Any ideas anyone?

2. All pieces are up for critique. So don't get upset over any critiques. The purpose of the group is to help each other.

So, Lyman, if anyone is up to offering a crit I leave it up to the other guys. It looks like the nature of the past threads was to keep people posting and sketching. This is Manji's brainchild so I'll see where he takes it.

LymanFunk
04-24-2007, 11:23 PM
No I dig that, completely. I just dont see as many crits here as in other labs, so I was kicking around posting it in another lab, then it occured to me that the way i am finishing these pieces, they fall in a gray area.

No worries either way....was just curious to get as much help as i could.

was just curious to get as much help as i could.

Your work is clean which is a good thing. Lineweights are there. But mix it up a little. Heavy lines applied to anything closer to the viewer and thinner lines moving away so it's not just an outline. Vary the hands on each arm to create more movement. Maybe have the outer arm raised. As it is they just look to similar to each other.

I know it's a fictional character (I do like the design) but the head seems positioned awkwardly. If that's her ability I apologise. The bullets on her right thigh can also contour to the shape of her body. It'll create the illusion of volume.

Finally, you need to determine a lightsource. The shadows aren't consistent such as the one on her right cheek and the ones on her arms in relations to her legs. Simple solution is to pick one spot for the lightsource.

Hope that's the help you are looking for.

LymanFunk
04-25-2007, 12:13 AM
AHA! I have shamed you into a crit!

Muahahahahah my plan is almost complete........

All kidding aside, sorry if I brow-beat you into that, but its wicked bad appreciated.....its exactly what i need!

The head positioning is awkward, youre right on there....I couldnt find a ref that worked so i tried to wing it.

I dig what youre saying on the arm positioning as well...I was trying to get a feeling of her hanging over potential prey, but I dont think i quite pulled it off. (no good ref again, or at least thats what I am going to blame it on)

Spot on with the light source as well....I get lazy with em sometimes. Ill rethink it (as well as the other stuff)

Again, sorry if I pushed you to it, but damned if i wont take your help and use it. :)

Glad to see join the group Hawkswift! LymanFunk yeah we can/will critique here no problem. If you really want critiques just state it with your post. I am sure we will rip you a new....I mean we will let you know what we see...yeah that's it. :) Also keep in mind if you take your idea and run with it to a completed stage the pencilling and illustration labs are always open.

I can see that...I guess any cartoonish robot with the round eyes will give that impression. I was actually thinking about this guy (http://cheeks-74.deviantart.com/).

Here is another attempt, this one I wanted more of a psychological aspect...emphasizing the "last soldier" part of the description.

slizerone and Asaru: I love both of your pieces and I really hope you join us next week. I really love how everyone is sharing their ideas and feeding off of each other.

antquinonez once again glad to see you join us and I like the feel you have going on. Also kudos to everyone with giant spider ideas, I would have never thought to go in that direction.

literacysuks1: Glad to see you going back and making corrections. Just don't be so hard on yourself, remember this activity is to learn, push that pencil, work out ideas and most importantly....practice. All of which you are doing so don't sweat it...too much. ;)

I tried a sepia prisma pencil on the soldier, but I didn't like having to sharpen the pencil every 5 strokes so I switched to a mechanical pencil when I started with Ginger, but it was getting to late by then.
