something from yesterday. I swiped the mouth and nose from John Byrne's Generations. I just couldn't get it.

That expression looks awkward because the mouth doesn't fit with what's going on with the eyes. Looks like an actor called Jeffrey Meek. Here's a trick. Cover his mouth and look at his eyes. That'll give you an idea as to what his mouth should be doing.

Superman smiles like I smile. Not very well. I do a good frown, which is how this started off.

I feel jipped, by the way. When I was groing up, I felt like I was promised an inker, someone who would tidy up my drawings. Turns out, I have to do it. That aint right.

I really love that Flash. He's crackling with energy, and I dig the side-of-the-pencil action a lot.

I like that "smokey" style you have going on. What kind of pencil are you using?

antquinonez
10-17-2007, 09:53 PM
i think i've settled between using a 2b and 4b. i think what you're seeing is the broadside of the pencil at fast speeds and varying pressures.

That's high praise, Xadrian. Been drawing a bit more, past few weeks, now that it's Fall and spending more time indoors.

Glad you like it, Loston.

thanks for the comments guys. here's a rendering -- a dead end, in my opinion -- until i get better at this sort of thing.

I've really been digging your output lately. The standalone sf girls aren't really your best work, but the rest is great. I really like the motion that most of the figures have.

I think hatching works on the basis that it will be inked. There's some pencilers here don't have the inker in mind and use the tonal method of a heavy outline of the figure and a mid tone for shading. That said, shade intuitively rather than by numbers. This rendering feels a little technical compared to your livelier work.

You are at your best when you use lumograph pencils. There's a freedom and fluidity that you seem to get when you use that medium. It's definitely the various line stroke/width and tone you get when using it and i'm hoping that you adopt that approach for the SF draw off.

As shoryuken said, good output.

thanks for the detailed crtique, greendri. yep, the shading was very flat and unrealistic. will work on it.

shoryukenmaster, thanks. i've been trying to get out of my comfort zone and trying to come up with what i thought was a tighter drawing style.

appreciate people looking out for me when I'm falling off. thanks

bindlestitch, thanks for the comment.

Hey antquinonez

Firstly the SF stuff you got going on is really cool ... and i am looking forward to seeing the finished piece. I love to look at an artists process. With that being said I have a couple of quick thinkgs to add.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y274/antquinonez/cammy_sf.jpg

I find the pose here to be a little weak. Firstly I am not sure what Cammy is suppose to be doing. Is she hitting someone ... or trying to grapple. From the leg position I would say hit ... but from the hands I would say grapple. I would study some of the Jim Lee videos you can find on You Tube. In one of them he talks specifically about how if really want to show someone in a hitting motion all of the limbs work "counter" to each other (e.g. if the right hand is forward punching the right leg is back and the left arm will be back with the left leg being forward). If you have both hands forward then you should have both legs back a bit. I have found that the advice works to make a fairly strong punch. Also, watch some fo you anatomy ... it sometimes appears to get a bit blobby ... and yeah I know I am working on the same thing, and watch your shading. It sometimes either looks rushed ... or it is bairly there ... some really defined spot blacks may really help to give some of your pieces more depth. Also, watch your hatching ... cross hatching is great for tonal difference ... but sometimes straight blacks is more appropriate. (Update ... cut this a bit short for a crying baby ...... dude I am really looking forward to seeing your finished SF pic ... and the Supes one too ... :D)

Keep up the great work ... look forward to seeing more very soon.

thanks, spidey. the spotted blacks is something i'm going to have to get a handle on. it feels awkward to me, to tell you the truth.

Bender has some serious mojo happening. Lela should be handling another metallic shooter ;).

Nice work. Didn't realise you referenced drawings from another artist (Elvgren). I'd like to add that you should explore other facial expressions than women smiling. Not that a woman shouldn't smile but maybe other seductive looks. The two pics above this post is what I mean.
