I can't sleep. And I'm tired of starting individual threads every time I doodle something new, so this will just be it.
I did this before bed yesterday, I don't like the face that much.

and so it's not so empty-ish here some recent stuff I never posted.

Those first three sketches (even the face you didn't like) are great. There is a good depth to the layering of your linework.

Awesome Keith glad to see you started one of these, great title by the way. :) Really like the two heads in the third pic. Did you use reference for those? Either way they rock. Keep posting, I really like your stuff.

I'm trying to learn how to color, so figured I can practice on this sketch. Have a lot to do to it still, like clean up the line art, add more highlights, etc. I'll work on it a little at a time. Need to buy a tablet this year since I'm so slow, pains me when I could do this with one in probably half the time.
Yowser...The colour really gives Superdyke...I mean Superwoman some real form.

I think you could use with fewer lines when you're laying out the drawing, and save them up for when you start rendering, which i think is very nice as is.
I worked out of that habit by sketching in with the side of my pencil and then catching the forms that i liked best.

Yeah I'm a mess when I don't thumb things out or do another layout on another paper. Well, I've been not caring about cleanliness lately since I got newer erasers recently, usually do the side of the pencil thing when I'm using a wooden pencil, but with this mechanical one I got (recently as well) it's kind of like drawing with a needlepoint. Looking into getting new supplies, like a thicker lead holder since I feel more comfortable with them in looser work.
I wonder what this crap is :-O

I've been slowly inking this drawing everyday for a little bit at a time learning how to ink in Photoshop. I figure I need to learn how to ink soon (both digitally and traditionally.) It's verryyy irritating to me when when working on getting some things right for longer periods sometimes, then people just love to change/omit things in inks/colors on what you spent so long correcting. Circle of life I suppose. >:0

Thanks Newlead
This is a bit of an old-ish drawing, thought I'd scan up some stuff to show you guys the process I had to go through to make it and the various tweaks for the editor. I don't think he'll mind since it's been out for a few months and this wasn't anything special.
Did a few thumbs, this one came out the best, I wanted more action in it though.
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/7919/vcythumb2wt0.jpg
So I made The figures in more action-y poses (trying my hardest to go into "Alan Davis mode.") Unfortunately this wouldn't be used so I had to completely redraw it. The Go-Bot is supposed to be much bigger, I think Venger could make himself bigger as well, but I went along with it anyways.
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/5922/vengercyrevum6.jpg
So after that slight snafu, James (the editor) drew up a thumb for me to go by and I made this. I like to do layouts myself, but some people are just very specific on what they want and I find nothing wrong with that.
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/9060/revisedvcygy2.jpg
Keith
05-20-2007, 03:00 PM
cont.
Afterwards we both noted that Cy-Kill's pose could be a bit more dynamic, he did another thumb on what he wanted done, and I did this.
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/2681/revisedrevisionvcyud2.jpg
After that was all well and done I did some more work while this got colored up. (I don't get to see too much when it comes to the color process unless my input's needed, they can handle themselves pretty well anyways I figure.)
http://img404.imageshack.us/img404/1416/vengercybf3.jpg
Joshua Ravello colored this one and I like it a lot, I don't get this much attention put to my work when people collaborate with me, so I was pretty blown-away looking at it for the first time. Although it was one of my first pictures for them, I knew for next time to tighten my work up a bit, (although James said it was fine, I like to be presentable as possible.)
I'mAWheel
05-20-2007, 08:34 PM
Oh, man, I haven't seen or thought anything about a Go-Bot in years and years and years. Those are all really solid, but I think the final pencils would've looked better in colour had they been inked. Josh's contributions to the piece look great mind you - and how busy is that guy? I see his awesome work all over the internerd - but I think the lines would be flattered by a little more weight.
Ah Go-Bots...the "K-Mart Transformers"--Nice job. I kinda agree that inking might have made it a better piece, but the pencils give it a cool feel, too

Maybe, not trying to make an excuse but at the time of the drawing I wasn't near my comp, so I didn't know what it exactly looked like, usually ref those type of things. The shading is really inconsistent and the details are muddy, so I don't consider it finished. Thinking about finding my pens in one of my bags and inking it though.

I'll try to get in at least a few a day, even if they're kind of a jumbled mess, it's more about control of lines rather than me trying to make "pretty" sketches every time.

Have been putting this one off, so I got back to it tonight. I wanted to spend a lot of time on each character/plane, little by little, since it's for myself really and I wanted to get it right. Her right leg bothers the hell out of me since it's too short, I'll have to adjust it when I muster the courage. Batou came out decent at least, still needs a lot of work though.

herro sir, that's a concept for a baddie from an 8 pager I am doing for a Ronin book (If all goes well anyways.) I am hesitant because I still do not know if I will get an art team that suits my work, but I'm trying to not half-ass these pages like the last set in any case. The legs are going to be redone though, think reverse-joint/chicken legs.
What I really want to post is some character design from my own project, but I'll do that when I draw up less spoilerrific stuff.
dfbovey
10-12-2007, 11:08 AM
Yeah, it's always up in the air when you don't get to choose your own team. Is it going to be inked and colored? I think with some of the fine line work shading you do, colors directly over that would look good. With an inker there is a good chance that alot of the energy in the pencils will get lost.
Keith
10-12-2007, 11:28 AM
Definitely agree, I figure a small amount of that energy will get lost in the transition to inks to a good inker no matter what, but as long as the final product looked good all around I'd still be happy. Problem is, I wish I could find a good inker who suits my style.
I expressed to the writer that I wanted to have a good team for doing the story, he also noted that it might just go straight to colors depending on who he can find. I've been a little crazy about how things look with inks/colors as of late after having a set of lackluster collaborations, but hopefully it will turn out well.
dfbovey
10-12-2007, 11:31 AM
Is the publisher open to you finding your own team? Or is that something you don't want to deal with?
How did you feel about Chris Major or Eti's take on your pencils?
Keith
10-12-2007, 11:41 AM
Is the publisher open to you finding your own team? Or is that something you don't want to deal with?
Well, all I know of right now is that the writer/creator of the story is the one in control of what he does with his set of pages, which I believe includes the art team. Reading the mail again he says if he can't find anyone, then Ronin would help with the process. I'd like to be involved in every part of what goes on if possible, but at the same time I don't really want to step on other people's toes.
greendri: I think they both did good jobs considering how messy and old the original picture was. Each of them has their strengths and weaknesses, but it wouldn't be fair to really judge/scrutinize their inks on something they did for fun (even though they both did better jobs than anyone who has inked me before.)
dfbovey
10-12-2007, 11:47 AM
I think if you know people that would work well with you, you should suggest it to the writer. Tell him that you don't want to step on his toes but here's a link to a guy I like and trust with my pencils. Probably couldn't hurt.
Keith
10-12-2007, 12:17 PM
Hate to sound so negative, but I think that's my main problem, I don't really know anyone. Closest I can think of is a friend I went to high school with, but he has his own projects and I'm 99% sure he wouldn't do it (we kind of had a friendly rivalry type thing.) Since it's also (I think) a back-end payment type deal, it's essentially "fishing without bait."
If it came down to it, I'd probably color over my own work, and I know the writer is an aspiring colorist as well, which is what we'll probably both end up doing "worst" case.
And this is probably the most I've ever talked about anything involving myself in art, which is somewhat weird to me. :o
Have you ever inked your own stuff? I highly suggest it. Try inking just a couple of your pages - its helpful to know what type of pencil lines translate best into ink and what doesn't. Your pencils seem a bit too rendered to be inked, but not quite tight enough to go directly to color.
Keith
10-13-2007, 04:21 AM
Hey Mase, well I haven't inked anything other than sketches, and that one piece I tried to do digitally but ended up doing something wrong. I have to buy some real inking stuff instead of these pens when I get some more loots.
The thing with the rendering is true though, I was either thinking of going completely clean with the next pages, or rendering until they are just very dark with very little lead/line variation. Whilce Portacio had something on his blog about his process of turning pencils into straight black basically per pixel, I tried it out a few times and it worked pretty well. So that's what I'm thinking about doing to a greater extent.
Sorry about all the word-walls lately, here's a quick prelim of one of the Bat-family members, it will be apart of a collab with a friend of mine.

Todd Mcfarlane inked his own work for a long time because he said the inkers were not catching the mood and feel of the drawing so he asked marvel if he could ink it on his own. Hope that inspires you ;)
Keith
10-19-2007, 11:50 AM
Well Todd has become a better inker than penciler lately I've noticed, though that Spidey card he did recently showed he can still draw pretty good.
I don't really care about certain tones or whatever being cut off at the inking process, I just can't get sharp/clean/accurate inks at all, but I can't really do them myself either when I try, so I dunno, it's a curse. Think I'm going to just give up shading my work altogether in work with others, no one can transition it well and I'm really just tired of stressing about it. Makes me feel like a complete jerk going "oh hey you did that wrong" or "that doesn't look right" all the time.
Prelim for something I wanted to do for that X-men girl draw-off thing. Didn't like how the final drawing was going so I just quit. My confidence has been pretty shot lately, combination of a lot of things.

soldier/grunt prelim design. I don't like being so vague, but I'll probably show off the finalized (and non-scribbled) character designs when I'm done with environment design, directly after that's when I'll be getting into the sequentials.
Figured I needed to get on a schedule/regiment to be more efficient. Only wish I had a concrete schedule for when the book was dropping, it doesn't seem very organized looking at their forums atm, which sort of makes me uneasy.

I'm no inking expert, just trying to bs my way to any advice I can give :o
notebookpress: It has a few issues, but it's pretty solid in a lot of areas. I think any inking does kind of lose "energy" or whatever in the transition, it's unavoidable.
I appreciate when people go to the effort of inking my stuff though, it's something that doesn't happen a whole lot. Lately I've kind of given up the perfectionist attitude when it comes to inks because it's really unproductive and unfair to the person working on inks, I'll settle for "good enough" nowadays.
ThreeEyesWorm: I wish, nowhere close as far as I'm concerned.
Since this will never get used (I think,) Firestar that was going to be apart of a piece of a magazine. I disliked doing it because I was given a (nsfw) reference image for the pose and told to copy it. Would you believe it was one of the first things she's ever inked (excluding her own illustrations)? And yes, she's definitely influenced by my inking due to my close proximity. :D There's areas like hair where she just does her own thing, and I really can't touch her speed and smooth line quality. Took me weeks to ink your FF whereas she took a few days. She's gonna be a scary good inker one day :)

spidey976: thanks, but please don't insult yourself though to compliment anyone, that ain't right. Wouldn't want to pass over my mistakes to anyone else, close to 20 years with drawing and I'm still not where I want to be.
Keith ... you do rock ... but I get your point. Don't worry ... I am striving to improve ... and in the future I will be bringing work that I think will be at a much higher level. If you are curious I have a sketch blog up ... and would love some C&C ... it is under my real name.

Was going to finish this yesterday on the 10th before I extended the deadline (so more folks would enter the draw-off.) I'm going to take a little more time on it though, maybe color it and see how that goes. I don't like how "Mad-ish" the faces are looking, blarg can't win them all.

Son of a &^*() ... that is awesome m8 ... I don't think I can something in for this one ... but I have seen a few great works so far. I am look forward to seeing them all. Dude if you don't mind me asking ... how do you clean up you work afterwards to make it look clean ... kneaded eraser of just plain old eraser ... I know a weird question
That's one pretty f%§#ing awesome illustration.
Great sense of motion, impact and cool choice of POV.
A winner!

spidey976: thanks Shawn. it depends, usually I just use one of those Generals erasers for any stronger marks, I have a kneaded eraser, it is like 2-3 years old so it kind of smudges a bit with prolonged use (I am "thrifty.") They usually last a long time if you're not using them with charcoal/really soft lead pencils.
Jel: Thanks man, I dunno there's still a lot of time for people to enter and whup my ass I figure.
JLFG: dude just enter, you could run away with it just with the right idea alone. Thanks though, this is such a butchered fish-eye, with the reversing and all.

Thanks. Not many references were used, it was all for the clothes on Chun Li and some shots of streets/buildings in China, both provided by Google. <3 google.

Panel from page 1 of an 8 pager I'm doing. It's a tad sketchy, but this page is mainly done, after I'm done with all of them, going back and making them tight as possible.
Also, even though I didn't mention it beforehand, sent the sample cards on the previous page to a nice guy from Upper Deck on Sunday, today I heard back and got an OK from them. So I'll be doing about 100 cards for the new Marvel Masterpieces line in early 2008. Thanks fellas, couldn't do any of this without the constant inspiration and support from the people here at PJ.
(Sappy, I know, but pretty true.)

Fell a bit behind because I caught a horrible flu this past week, but anyways here's a panel from page 1. The story kind of starts out really quick, pretty action-oriented throughout. I still am not 100% happy with the pages, but I have to get them done regardless.

Just a color test/guide I gave to the colorist. I am not really that great of a colorist myself, but I thought I'd give an example of the look that would probably suit the style more. Quick grads for the highlight, and 2-3 eraser strokes that makes the texture.

Great stuff man, great stuff !
Just sometimes be a little careful with proportions (size of the head compared to the body, features compared to the general size of the head.)
Also, watch out, I noticed on your last few drawings that you tend to elongate your torsos a bit much, especially on your females.
Killer action and rendering otherwise!
Keith
03-20-2008, 01:56 AM
Yeah I agree, the X-Men drawing in general was especially rushed and the heads are huge and bother me, I cringe every time I look at it now. Looking back, used to draw little squat torsos, nowadays I kind of got to the idea that 4 heads tall is the norm for slender/athletic types, I should probably bump it down to 3 1/2 though.
Well, thanks for the input Jel.

I had some cards to post, but I'm playing it safe today, I'll explain a bit below.
JLFG: thanks man
Manji: Thanks, you would like the punk Storm wouldn't you ;/
Spidey: Well, they just insert these as bonuses into packs of the regular cards (I think which are pre-ordered, I'd have to look it up.) A friend told me to just submit a few samples and I was in, wasn't a big thing.
I think the most frustrating thing so far has been the process of submitting samples to every card you do, and have to wait a while to get them approved. Add to that having the chance of any of them being rejected for whatever reason Marvel feels like, which happened today for me for the first time.
Let's just say, Marvel probably doesn't like Barracuda. :omg:
Az: thanks, I tried to get him right for once :/
dfbovey: thanks man for the nod, I appreciate it.
Hey wow, your cards are pretty awesome man. Fantastic texturing.
