Okay so now that I got the formalities and homage out of the way, lets get right down and dirty.

This is my sketch blog :D

I joined penciljack in late July 2006 because I was really impressed by the artwork people were posting up, mainly from a gentleman who draws the Chronicle of Garas series. I was blown away at his sequential web based comic. I always believed I had skill but never knew how to fine tune it and when I started to look at all the great stuff the members of PJ was posting it lit a fire in me........I didnt realize how much I truly SUCKED.....until I came here and was obliterated by the competition!

There is so much skill in this place, its crazy, and the great thing about it it's all healthy competition and motivation. Everytime you see someone do a great job it makes you want to sit down and get better.

It is a very uplifting enviorment that I am privelaged to be able to join and it has let me improve my skills tremendously. So basically this sketch blog will be a chart to see the progression of my skills from the first steps I took into Penciljack. I've saved every piece of work that I posted on PJ so I will go ahead and start posting them in order to see the whole process.

I guess this is a little more about me.

A Star Wars DrawOff entry, just winged it on this, thought of a cool fight and put it together!

Starting to put a dynamic scene together of a Custom Fantasy Drawoff. The requirment was
at least 3 characters pulled from fantasy genre but they had to be completely custom and orginal.
So I made a Paladin/Ninja/Guardian and a Pirate/Cowboy/Rogue vs. a Warlock/Mage/Vampire
with his Orc/Goblin/Vampire/Zombie minions. I forgot to throw in a space referance to cover all the
basis, but it was close.

Spidey on bridge version 2 - the first one didnt work out too well since it looked
like spidey was breakdancing on the hood of a taxi so I went with an idea that Spidey

I just got caught up with all these life issues that just kinda hit me at once, like my cars transmission blew out, my tv went out, my refrigerator went out, and cell phone all in a span of one month...its like I got hit by an E.M.P. or something :confused: besides I gotta big move to L.A. coming up next month so I've kinda be MIA for a bit trying to get a job down there while still working here in the meantime.....but I'm back....almost at least.

Besides good things come to those who wait..............unless your a squirell........and its winter time......and you forgot to gather all your nuts by then......then......your pretty much..........screwed! :D

Blink Concept - A drawing for a friend on Penciljack. He asked me to draw
Blink from Exiles so here is my attempt or her gone throw a portal or opening one. I
tried to make it real dynamic since that apparently appears to be my strength....

Omega Red vs. Psylocke - Original concept for a drawoff vs. Deth. He challenged me......and whooped me! :( but its was real fun!

Omega Red vs. Psylocke version 2 - Changed it up a little bit but moving the head
back and twisting the right foot of Omega out more, redid Psylockes face. I think I like
the first version better. Too bad since I spent alot of time doing this.

Ghost Rider Desert - A redone idea that I actually went with on the drawoff, did okay since
Musaschi came with one of the nicest entries of Ghost Rider. One of my favorite pics back then, I used a 11x17 page for the first time, the scanner didnt pick up all the details though.

Lets begin with the first few days of the month just trying to get back on track here.

Iron Man Redesign - First redesign this month looked good at first. Then a few days
later started seeing all the problems with it.

Iron Man Redesign 2 - Second redesign, after I drew this one, I started noticing all problems with the previous one. Pretty pleased with this guy so far. Not too excited about the hands/ arms and the energy coming from them.

Conan Bloodlust - Got angry and expressed it real well. Made some changes already to this version by lengthening the hair and making the left chest wider so it connects better under his arm. I might make his chin alot more masculant but all in all a good piece I'm proud of.

Green Lantern Flight - Nice one but not too happy with the head and left leg. Started out as an anatomy study but I enjoyed the pose so much that it turned into this.

Robin My friend Josh - One of my friends asked me to draw him as Robin. He looks like Robin and he even played him for Marine Worlds Batman Water Show. A big problem with the right arms bicep, but its too late to fix it now.

Batman Pounce - I wasnt too happy with the Batman Dark Knight cause it fealt kinda stale and lacked alot of action. With a character like Batman he is always busy, constantly
being busy, not taking time to pose, cause he can do so many cool things. I also didnt like the way his head was positioned orginally. So I did this piece which I think came out alot
cooler and with more life. More pleased with this big time but I still dont like that he is not as buff as he was in the other one. This is more like Old school Batman!

Cool! I like the Punisher, and the last Batman drawing you posted, is great! Keep the art coming!
Now, for the crituqes :).

I think the Punisher's neck is too wide, making his torso seem to small for his body.
His right knee also looks off, the Punisher's knee looks like it's coming stright at the viewer, but the rest of his thigh is showing it's side view.
I also think that his right forearm is to long, it should only come down to the Punisher's waist, now it's a hand size to long.
The Skull in the backround could have been done better, the
the area where the nose is suposed to be looks un-even.

Batman's left arm, looks smaller than the right, not in length, but in width.
There is a tangent, where Batman's forearm, hits his thigh, making the drawing look flatter than it could be.

I realize these are just sketches, it's something to keep in mind if you try to finish them.

Dude, I like your vision and creativity. You also have a sense of humor which works well with your ideas. Keep sketching the way you do and reference to check whether characters are proportionate. Can't stress this more than I do to others in the same boat and that is to draw from life and do a lot of observations. Drawing things in the physical world and the repetitive actions will hopefully iron out any problems you may have. I really do see a lot of potential and it's a plus that you aren't trying to be a Jim Lee clone.

And dont worry about me using the, "those are only sketches excuse" I rather have a problem addressed at the foundation then at the end product so keep those C&C goodies coming! ;)

Okay really though, I remember one year I took your stuff down to get crits from a panel of DC and Marvel pros ... they all said the same thing, but I didn't understand what they were talking about. Well I think I get it now.

You're inking with your pencil.

Remember when that one artist said that you're an inker's worst nightmare? I think this is what they're talking about.

Try pulling back on a couple of sketches ... just go with the lines, not the "inks" and see if you like the outcome.

Also ... I think your perspectives are a little off. Do you keep in mind the horizon and that stuff? Y'know, the 3-point perspective vs. 2-point, and so forth?

Dammit Dude, I thought I fixed that problem! Well I guess its back to the drawing boards. HAHaaa "An Inkers Worst Nightmare" I remember that, I actually added it to my signature. Hmm maybe I should start inking my own work and see if that helps me get a feel of neccessary lines :confused: Maybe I'll take pity on inkers that way :D

Anyways I'll start posting some finished pieces let me know if you see the same problems there too. It's hard for me to tell since I'm so used to it. Its always good to have another set of eyes.

Okay cool. Yeah the first ones has alot of problems with it, but I didnt wanna post up just good drawings so I just started posting up anything that was somewhat finished. Yeah I dont know about the forearm being too long, Its about a head length from the elbow to the hand :confused: but I totally agree with the neck, its super wide and the head is really protruding forward. I'll try to see if I can do a better punisher pic. The second punisher pic kinda sucks too so Im just gonna start from scratch.

Batman kinda has no neck on that one too so I'm most likeyl going to change it up alot, Ill do a picture of a new one for that too and post it up. Keep the crits and comments coming Bobster, I always appreciate it :)

I wasnt going to try to enter any more drawoffs but I got some great ideas and went with it. This is something I whipped up for the Minotaur drawoff. I didnt want to just do a regular Minotaur so I did a battle scene with a GIANT MINOTAUR! :D Besides it gave me another excuse to draw Kratos, God of War ;)

Yeah dude, I usually use the low camera angle cause it opens up a whole bunch of dynamics of the picture. I mainly use it for pin-ups cause it just makes it look more exciting, but your totally right...I rely on it way too often, something I'm tryin to change ;)

Okay well I guess I'll show my hand for the pulp fiction drawoff. I was gonna do Rocketeer but I saw that alot of people were gonna go that route so I shifted gears and came up with this. Its still in the works but its looking pretty good so far.

UPDATE #2
Fixed some elements elongated the body just a tad
added a neck, raised his left swinging arm higher so his not ducking his own axe,
switched the position of the blade to the other side so hes not doing a golf swing,
took away the cropped right arm by moving victim more to the right. Added an effect
of wings with splatter of blood and debrees, maybe background to give it an angel
of death look. Also used light from direct above to show like a more powerful coming
down from heavens look and also covers the face in shadows which is cool for the
death dealer look. Whew!

While I really dig all the superhero/scifi/fantasy stuff you've done, I'd suggest really working on variety with actual people. I'm looking at the guys in these last couple sketches, and they kind of all look the same. The varying hairstlyes don't do enough to really make any distinction between them...but that's just my two cents.

Keep working on the faces like you have been, they don't really look as good as the rest of your work. I like that cyclops one the best out of them all though. Also you may want to get in the mirror to look at character poses, a lot of your drawings are not posed natrally.

You got awesome ideas and a good drawing quality, but you need to work out how things fit together. I think it's because maybe you skip structure. If you look to your hero Jim Lee, his stuff is structurally solid. Even without the detail in his work, things are proportionate.


I started to use understructure in a much simpler way through mid March when the concept finally sinked in. Its helping me fix alot of problems by simplifying it. I still got loads of understructure problems but I hope the differance is finnally starting to show. Check it out and let me know. Any tips is appreciated :)

As for referance thats something I definately need to start working on. I havent done it for a while so I need to go back to it. Ill put some referance work up once I get some more time too.

Regarding where I've been. I just moved to L.A. and got three jobs, working about 70hrs right now so its been tough to get sometime to post up updates, but I will try to do a better job at it, still drawing just not lots of time to scan and post it up. Here we go theres no real way I draw pics
cause I tend to differ my techniques from getting too bored. Every artist has their own technique and there is no exact way to draw a picture but these are the most common practices that I follow, if you want I can put it into steps like you asked. I'll try to toss out an example later on tonight to illustrate what I'm talking about too.

So lets begin with an character.
Lets just say ..............uuuuummmmmmmmmmm........
Powergirl! So we can call that Step 1

Step 2,
Concept.
What is she/he doing?
The main goal that is being accomplished by the character.

Step 3,
Why?
Breaking down the psycology of the character helps describe and put emotion into a picture adding it more life than just a sketch. Alot of the things I drew in this sketch blog are just sketches to practice but the ones that you mentioned had this further element added to it. This also gives a reason/intensity and purpose of the picture. Whether its simple or something monumental like the Cap America feeling sorrow one. There has to be a reason behind the picture otherwise the picture serves no purpose. In other words every picture regardless of being a pinup or sequential work should have some sort of story to it even if is to just look bad a$$ posing.

Step 4
Composition!
Now this makes a big deal cause you can easily see where I took this step or not in the pictures I did cause the ones I didnt it still looks unfinished, like the Batman and Catwoman crap I threw out. The best way that works for me to do composition is actually to make a thumbnail about 2inches wide by 1 inch tall. I go in there establish the character and background and all that other good stuff so I can see what it looks like from a different perspective. Once I have something concrete after I fidget around with it I go ahead and scan it in. And blow it up to usually 8.5 x11 piece of paper. I print it out and put it as the underlayer to my picture. I get the basic form and area covered from this trace over to make it look right.

Step 5
Understructure/Foundation
This step is very crucial as you can see everyone telling me from all the previous post before APRIL to do. It is something that I never really understood since recently but now I find saves me alot of time and headache. What this is a simple why you come up with to break down the character without all the detail work. Wheather you use a maniquin format or circles to illustrate the characters pose/ it is every foundation that needs to be set so it will prevent you from wasting time later on. This is the hardest part even though its the simplest cause everything from proportions to foreshortening is broken down and set here. But is best to get this right now and not have to fix it after putting all that time and effort in.

Step 6
Anatomy breakdown.
This is where you would add the basic circles and blocks to represent muscles on the body nothing concrete just the positioning and proper alignment/size blah blah blah.

Step 7
Fleshing it out
Now here is where you go back in and complete the picture making it look nice and pretty. Since all the groundwork is done you can go in and add the costume and all the other elements to bring out the picture.

Step 8
The Finish.
This step is where you would go back and use line weights to bring out the piece more adding depth and shading/blacks and contrast lines and all that good stuff to make it more eye catching. Just the little stuff that really brings out the picture alot more.

Thats about the whole process broken down into steps that anyone can follow. If I do all these steps I usually turn out a good picture, If I screw around and get lazy and skip a step.....I usually pay for it by the picture turning out kinda crappy. So its important to follow each step. Like I said its good to find your own technique, this is what I find that helps me out the best. Try it, expirement with other techniques and see which one you enjoy and are willing to follow, it will help you find your own "way" technique to drawing. I hope that helps dude :)

Just remember, you will get hired on the way you interpret the world not the way you can closely immitate how someone else interprets the world. So its best to look at things and see how you would like to draw it and not how JIM LEE or Alex Ross draws it.

Yeah I was just trying to screw around with fusing characters together. I was just doing a warmup at first and it turned out looking pretty cool so I decided to work with it. since we were talking about the step by step process, and
I never got to put up the process. I scanned a copy of the
roughs for this picture. This is how it started.
There just small thumbnails that I blew up each to 8.5x11
and place them side by side to get the full picture which I
used to redraw on a 11x17 board. I normally use just a regular
8.5x11 for regular pictures but on this one I decided to go for
pro.....errr....more proffesional than usual.

I like the DC Zombie drawing! The right (our left) part of Wonder Woman's hair, blends into Batman, making it hard to tell if I am looking at WW's Hair, or if Batman is bleeding.

I also like the Hulk V.S. Pitt drawing. I think if you added Pitt's left arm/hand into the drawing, it would add more depth, and dimension to the picture.

Perspective wise I was shooting for curvalinear perspective trying to do that fish eye thing...... I think the tank is throwing it off. Is there anything else you see thats making it off? If I bring in the right side of the tank will that fix the problem? or am I still missing something? Any tips will be greatly appreciated :)

I had to rush the backgrounds and alot of the detail work so its still a little messy. I'll try to go back and retouch it one of these days. I did it on the plane sitting next to some fat lady who took up all my damn elbow room!

you are getting so freaking good its unbelievable! the guns in that punisher piece are excellent! wolvie vs hulk has great movement! while im not digging the faces on the FF piece too much, your rendering skills have imrpvoed a hundredfold!

You are coming along nicely.Just work on them faces. Learn to draw them from any angle. Make sure you focus on the eyes because to me if you can't draw eye's you can't draw. That's my take at least. Keep it going.

My fav choice is TaskMaster, since he trained the next captain
america U.S. Agent. And he is one of the greatest hand to hand
fighters of all time. Also he has no super powers and he
has a shield....just like cap.

I love these pics m8 ... some great ones ... though by the way Taskmaster does have a power ... he can repeat ANY hand to hand move he has ever seen. Including DD and Cap's shield throw. Well any advanced human move at least. I love Galactus waiding into it ... lol.

Anyways still very cool heroe/villian.....wayyyy underated.
I would love to see him used more in books.
