your rendering is, in general, very very good. this are sketches only, but somehow the built-from-scratch figures could use some more dynamism. overall, very interesting and fresh :)

I agree... kind of. I really like 1,2,& 5... they seem much more interesting, to me. The comic-booky stuff is really good, but kind of flat. Over all I'm impressed.

Thanks, man. I do want to inject more life into my work and be clean too with moderate success.

I need to do more warm ups before I do drawings and try to finish them. It does help to sort out issues with proportion, anatomy and composition.

Well having ever read like two comics of Wonder Woman it was really hard to get the feel of the character. this is a tonal rendering I'm going for to do the draw off because I might use the same method for the pulp character.

Ok, so I told a little lie. This is definitely my final attempt at the Amazon woman. I should post the pencils prior to this that made me reach to this rendering approach. To sum it up, tight penciling becomes a process. A boring process in fact and it sucks the life out of a thumbnail or sketch. So I sat there and looked at the polished work i was trying to attempt and just didn't like it. Then I went into life drawing mode where I really enjoy myself and attack the paper with the actions of a swordsman. And there you have it. Something that is my own style and not generic like the stuff I've been posting.

I had an image in my head that I wanted to do for either Tarzan or Conan. It just does not seem to work on paper or the perspective I wanted to use would take too much time. Pretty unsatisfied with my February submission, but it's my first Conan drawing aside of these ones which are better.

Thanks gmags, I will try but I might concentrate more on sequentials for next months comic convention in Australia.

Thanks Lumosart . I think I wrote that before I altered it with the sharpie. I enjoy using straight up inks but hardly do it. All has changed since I bought a new art diary.

This was done sitting in class while doing perspective drawing exercises. Getting taught by an awesome Disney background painter. I was gearing myself to draw Conan for the Feb draw off.

http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/greendri/conanTAFEroughs-1.jpg

This was done on my day off and I struggled to get the image from my head and put it on paper. I scrapped the idea because Conan is not really the focal point.

Some observation drawings with my RSI affected hand. New method of how I using grip a pencil that is taking longer than I'm usually used to. This drawing uses the principals of three as adopted by an artist called Jack Hamm who our art teacher lives by. The big piece is a shark egg.

My friend from my illustration class kind of cut me with the statement that people from our class couldn't draw to the level of the Warcraft conceptual artists out there. I thought there could be definitely some people who could. Want to prove him wrong soonish.

Then another friend said aiming to be a comic artist was too low a standard and that conceptual artists of games were better. Yes to some extent. Finished work yes...storytelling maybe not.

Thanks, New. I want to do more life drawings but I only do one shift a week of work and can't afford to do the life drawing I'd like. Sure, I can draw impressions of people walking, reading and so forth. I could even draw people on my travels. But it's nowhere as good as someone actually posing for 5-30 minutes. That's just an opinion.

That said, I'll post more life drawing studies I'll be doing in my sketchbook just to add to the other 10 that I have. Travellers beware! You'll be interpreted in a sketch book.

Might enter the Batman/Alfred draw off. Been doin too many pin ups and need to work on my storytelling and sequential skills, although I still need to improve on the pin ups.

The story is told in 4 panels. Batman is sulking with a photo frame cupped in his hand. He looks dejected and his boot lays in front of him. I purposely made Bats look fat (holiday weight) to lend more credibility to his self doubt. He's heartbroken over the Midnighter.

2nd panel. Alfred looks onward and tries to alleviate the situation by offering Master Wayne some tea. He looks unbothered.

3rd Panel. Suddenly Bats lets out his emotions. He yells at the injustice to being used by the Midnighter. Close up of Bats to capture his anger.

4th panel. Alfred looking quite stunned and shock at Bats' temper tantrum.

Not a well thought out story but done for a chuckle. I also like to make fun of Batman because in reality he would have his ass handed to him. Might rework it to accommodate a better read to right side page. Looks pedestrian.

Nice work! I admire your productivity, it's something I need work on.

I really like the Stan Lee as Daredevil drawing, the woman on the horse, and Black suit Spiderman, are great as well.

I do feel the Daredevil drawing, with Cap's shield looks too flat. I think it may be the angular shapes you used to define him, rounding them out may help. Both of Daredevil's arm's also look too long to me.

good work man!

Thanks, man. It's easy to be productive. You just need a focus and channel it. Over the years I let my artistic process dwindle by not practicing so I made it a mission last year to pool my efforts into being a better artist. So far I think it's working because I'm righting the past wrong with all criticisms.

As for the Daredevil drawing. Sometimes I go to that angular mode and obviously it's not working going on from the responses of other people. So I added the smoothed out version. As for arms, I like drawing long arms and would like to draw long legs too. Like a style thing. But I've been called up on that so may have to stop doing it.

True, true. I heard this from too many people and now I'm very conscious of it. I've been doing everything to address this and my conclusion is just to leave the marks on the page or just draw with a pen and clean it up in photoshop. Ink for me seems a better medium to use.

Lately it's just been pencils. Clutch, mechanical ranging from 2H to 3B. For the darkest tone I use black/blue ballpoint pen or a felt tip pen. The technique for sepia toning can be done using sepia inks but I just use photoshop by adjusting hue/saturation or color option with the brush. I use it more often now for the tonal aspect because I'm not too fond of monochrome tones on my stuff anymore.

Thanks Manji for the compliment. If I could swap style with anyone here it'd have to be yours. So damn sophisticated. In terms of Freddy vs Wolvy, the approach wasn't as grand as I pictured it in the mind's eye. Freddy entering his dreams and ripping through his adamantium laced skull could of been a lot more disturbing.

Nothing like forcing someone to crit. Honestly, you didn't have to. If I sounded harsh it's because I make an effort to do work. Joking is all well and good and I do it a fair bit but in more appropriate forums. As for your suggestion to use photo ref whenever I get the chance, I'll have to stop or use it little of it. Anyone can copy from photo reference it seems and it helps for an artist to draw from their imagination. Why stick to the safest options when taking risks will achieve better results in the long run? Something to keep in mind with your work.

You have some nice stuff in here Greendri. Loads of improvement too.

I'd like to see some more art like that Flash piece a few pages back. It's obviously incomplete, and it has its rough spots, but you really nailed some of the anatomy and that's the best use of blacks and hatching I've seen from you.

Dri
06-15-2007, 07:06 AM
Funny you should mention that krikkit. I'm redoing the Flash piece because it is incomplete and I got some flak from Charkxl saying the rendering is cool but the anatomy is off.

So in a nutshell it's like I'm caught in two minds. But I'll finish the redone Flash in half an hour.

I like the rendering and the demon guy but iron fists pose really takes a lot of impact away, the way his legs are spread he looks like he's standing on one leg and kicking the monster very weakly and trying to rear back to punch him all at the same time. Maybe if the leg on my right was coming at the camera more and bent under him a bit more he'd look like he was taking a flying kick? I dunno. I could just be looking at it the wrong way.

Maybe I'll change it when I haven't got so much on my plate. His leg is keeping the demon at bay while he measures a punch. Like a leg check if you will. If he were to do a flying kick he wouldn't really be measuring to punch. Last time I drew a guy kicking I was told it looked like a breakdance move. Sometimes you can't win.

Thanks, Manji. Usually it's easy for me to get likeness but ever since I concentrated on comic book drawing it's quite difficult to get in the mindset. But I've been thinking of changing the whole comicbook approach as it doesn't seem a good fit for me.

Looking at artists that I aspire to it may be conceptual designers or fine artists. Exceptions being Charest, Mack and Hitch.

Just to punish myself further I had another idea I wanted to eventually colour by tablet.

Yeh, I only referred it to as soccer is because football in the US is gridiron whereas in Australia it's rugby league. I loved watching the EPL when I had cable and I too was gutted when I heard the news about Henry's departure. I actually dreamt that happening on the eve of Arsenal's CL final against Barca.
