You make Doc Strange look like a sorceror instead of a guy in a puffy shirt (arrr)
Great work, as always.

I agree that the Dr. Stranges are awesome. The Mr. Fantastic page made me laugh. Not that it's bad, but it looks like the Invisible woman has two long black nipples coming at us. Glad you finally started one of these.

Love the face and the skull knee pad. Is it me or does she not have any lips, just a gaping hole with those probably bloodstained teeth showing through. Very evil looking. Reminds me of the little girl in the Dawn of the Dead remake.

I think you'd be a lot happier with your color stuff if you flatted it first.

Manji
03-28-2007, 10:30 AM
Cadaver: How do you think I ended up this way? Geesh.
Justice: Thanks for the shoulders catch I don't know what the deal is lately but I have been doing that on a lot of stuff especially women.
MC Fumunda: Flattied it first? Oh I don't know that sounds like crazy digital art talk. Me and digital art just don't get along, which maybe because I don't have a wacom. Bah!

Newlead
03-28-2007, 12:15 PM
manji- the war goddess sketches are coming along nice. there's always a tough balance in charcter design sketches where making the clearest design will sometimes trump the cool pose IMHO.

That's a hot Sue! hotter than McNiven's. Spidey's cool but it'd be nice to see the lines on the upper body worked the same way in the leg area. It looks like you're regaining your spark your previous drawings were missing. Also good that you took a sketchbook to the doctors :)

Justice thanks so much for the link I am sure I will spend hours looking it over. Thanks for the comments guys and Cadaver you better start posting again...or else

Manji
06-11-2007, 08:10 AM
Oh and yeah that is Sue above Reed. This is a sketch/idea I was working out but never finished. It was for the Fantastic Four evolution of powers" redesign draw-off a while back.

In short Reed's body had almost become useless but his mind was stronger than ever, think Stephen Hawkins on steroids...or mental steroids that is.

Sue's body had completely phased out, she is now like a wraith. She can still focus her mind and powers to form a ghost-like image of herself but this lasts for mere seconds. However Reed has created a machine in which she can enter the and still communicate and interact. Think of Reed as the brains, Sue a spy/scout, Torch a tortured loose cannon, and Thing is still the strong one but much more monstrous. I have better drawing etc laying around here some and will post 'em later.

Cool stuff, what materials do you use?

Manji
06-18-2007, 08:47 AM
Thanks man as far as materials go I like to use bristol board and a .5 and/or .3 mechanical pencil (pentel) with either HB or 2b lead, I prefer 2B. I also sometimes use my lead holder also with 2B. I only use a kneaded eraser.

HOWEVER, most of these are done either in ballpoint pen or a .5 mechanical pencil on printer paper.

I have always had a love for Jean Grey. I don't know why but I just have, I always thought Whilce Portacio had an awesome Jean. I however don't, I just can't get a feel for her. I think since I like the character so much I just can't do what is in my head. So here is a face study I was doing tonight, which turned out generic & nothing special.

I can tell you're working very hard where anatomy is concerned, Jason! Allow me to suggest a good anatomy book to you--one that might prove a little more helpful to you right now. At the Kubert School, this book was a standard issue, that I still find to be useful. It doesn't cost a lot either, but it's very good, and no nonsense!

The ART OF COMIC BOOK INKING book by Gary Martin is another great book to have. It has some excellent stuff on inking, naturally, but there are several pages dealing with lighting the face that our excellent sources of lighting reference!

Thanks Juan and no I didn't use any reference. I really really need to use more reference and I have acutally started to use some. The girl above (http://www.headstatic.com/images/forum/sketch_thread/girl56.jpg) started out as me playing around with Jean Grey ideas but when I picked it up tonight I actually started to use some reference and it took on a life of it's own. When I use reference I just use when I become stuck etc. But even then I look at it, put it down, then try to remember it as I draw.

I'm going to make a weird remark.

Usually, I can tell by looking at drawings and sketches what the drawing process was. (Or I think I can tell.) I get an idea of the capabilities of the artist, by seeing through the artwork, imagining what the creation process was like.
Anyway, what I'm getting at is that -for some kind of reason- I'm lost when looking at your sketches. I ask myself the question: 'how did he do it?'.
It's very weird. :o

Maaaybe it's because overall, your skills are pretty good, but from time to time there's something that doesn't jive that well. That looks wonky, stiff... Haha, I'm not trying to bring you down or anything. ;) It's just some weird thing that I feel -or more accurately don't feel- when looking at your sketches.
For the record: your stuff is swell. This thread is very enjoyable.

Crits: get more comfortable drawing hands. Drawing hands (and feet) is something you seem to shy away from.

Tip for using a wacom... ummm... use it often?
To get acquainted with color schemes, open a nice painting or photo in Photoshop or painter and see which colors appear where, using the color picker tool. It's a good way to learn a variety of color schemes.

No offense taken what so ever Ra and thanks for the comments because you basically summed up the way I feel about my own stuff. I think my biggest problem is that I rarely use reference. I try my best to figure it out using construction methods (some from loomis, most from bridgman and a few of my own) but in doing this, I either lose focus of the overall goal or simply screw it up. Sometimes a sketch just 'comes out' I know what I want and it happens but most of the time I am just trying to 'break through'. I think I really need to start using some reference and more importantly just see something through. Thanks for the comments Ra because I have been a fan of your stuff for a while.

Reference is good when you get stuck on something for sure.

I think the thing that I would like to know is do you ever do any thumbnails to plan out your work first? Or do you just start drawing? I ask because of the people that post here, I think I've seen you start and not finish things more than anyone else. You're like my polar opposite. I rarely post unfinished pieces or sketches. Everything ends up finished because I'm obsessive cumpulsive that way. :)

I really enjoy looking at sketches and yours and a few others around here in particular.

Thanks Bovey and yes I do thumbnails and actually plan out a composition from time to time. I will either do serveral small thumbnails (like every one else) or I will mark off some 3" x 5" rectangles and start filling it in with black with various shapes at different angles. On some I will let black dominate and on other I will let the white dominate, then I pick the one I like best (design wise) and fit or find that theme in the design.

Meaning if the theme is say the sexy girl draw-off then I would apply random black strokes and shapes to the thumbnails pick the composition/design I like best and make the girl 'fit' into that composition.

But mostly I am entirely too impulsive and just fly by the seat of my pants like a moron and apply none of my ideas or knowledge.

You have the same problem with eyes as i do. The eyes never align. Flip the sketch over and hold it up to a light or on a litebox and sketch on the back the eye as it should be, flip it back and correct it. Also you still aren't getting the head and necks properly lined up.

Manji
01-22-2008, 01:24 PM
Thanks Justice and I will keep my eye on the head and neck connections more. In regards to the eyes not lining up, everytime I don't draw using my drafting table (which I have set to an almost vertical angle) my stuff will get wonky. Even when doodling I really need to pay more attention to how I have my paper turned etc. Anyway thanks for the comments guys.

I don't know if it's just me, but you seem to have lost a lot of energy in your pictures.

Maybe it was because you never finished your the majority of your traditional stuff that it had more of energy to it, but now that you've gone digital your work seems much stiffer. It might be that you had more open or thinner lines with traditional and it didn't seem as heavy. I think a lot of the energy was implied and now that you're finishing the pieces, you don't seem as confident with implying anything. Now that you're blocking in more of your figures they seem stiffer, darker (as in lighting) and heavier.

It's still really awesome stuff, don't get me wrong, but I miss the energy you had before. :(

Shoryukenmaster I know what you mean. Style has been something that has been driving me up the wall lately. Long story short I have been getting some job offers lately to do everything from character designs to comics (you I can't believe it either). But each person wanting me to work with them has said something about my style which has been freaking me out because I think I have a style but not really. I find that when I paint its different from when pencil, which is different from my digital or pen sketches. Anyway I have become VERY cognitive of this and it is actually making me overthink and freak out. I just need to find a happy middle ground or something I suppose.

Wasp rape!

Try to incorporate your figures a little more with the background - even though it's basic. Something I also struggle with, but it's something very essential.

I like the progress, kiddo!

shoryukenmaster
06-17-2008, 07:03 AM
With the wasp, I got the impression that he was tickling the girl. I dunno, I have kids and I guess I'm just used to seeing them flounder while I tickle them. Her face definitely doesn't look like she's having a good time, which is the only thing that kept this from being a humorous picture for me.

I agree with Ra about the backgrounds. Both the wasp girl and the demon business men, don't seem to be a part of their bg.

I really like the flying demon thing. I think that style fits you well. The werewolf is friggin awesome. I wish it was more of a dynamic pose, but that's nitpicking. Keep it up!

I wouldn't worry about your style, man. I think that the painted stuff is just as identifiable as being "you" as the penciled work - the difference is really just in how you render it. With the pencil your style is more dependent on line, as opposed to shading and gradients.

Beautiful!!!

My only humble crit would be to echo what was said above about background integration with the figures.

Really coming along and I love the ballpoint sketches a page back.

I just saw that there is a hellboy drawoff. So I threw this together real fast. I hope to flesh it out for the drawoff. http://headstatic.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/hellboy.jpg

For a draw-off. Did this one in about 2 hours. Working on some paid work and was just burned out so decided to do this one for myself...and the draw-off.

Thanks rock but it's not really awesome. I'm fixing it though.

Anyway in the meantime another for the pile. This was done for SpawnSC's "MIX IT UP" group over in community projects. Pretty fun practice piece.

Gwen Stacy WIP. Also it should be noted this is one of the few times I actually used reference. The pose (and face) are better as a result but it just doesn't have a good flow to it. I don't know probably been looking at it too long.

Been in a funk lately, one of those where you just hate everything you do. Anyway here are two speedpaints I forced myself to do just now. 20 minutes for both. Just trying to get the groove back.

Thanks man I appreciate it. As far as coloring or painting over other people's stuff. I haven't done anything officially yet but I would give it a try I suppose.

Pfftt..you're lucky I don't charge you for looking at this thread. :p Send me something high rez it might be fun considering how detailed you can be.

You know I have never really thought about the Ebay thing that seriously before. Maybe I should. Either way though you are right I do need to start working more on paper. Damn digital is great for speed etc but I do feel it can make you lazy. I enjoy the freedom of playing around with color schemes etc but it can take your focus by offering too much of a safety net.
