She looks like a very sad jedi sith whatever she is. The upper left arm looks hella skinny, but overall, very nice execution Manji.

I can't believe this is the first time I've gone through your blog. You do great work. I like your pencil work the most; I think it showcases your strengths best, your understanding of the form, your general rendering skills. The color work is nice but the drawing underneath gets lost somewhat. I don't think you have a tight grasp yet of creating solid form in the color pieces but strong progress is being made.

I'll definitely be stopping by more often.

I really like the face on the full figure sketch in that last post man. Good stuff.

I've noticed that you've had some "off" proportions in the last few full body female sketches. It's a problem I sometimes have too, so it kinda jumped out at me...

Looks like you have the elbow too high on the arms and the legs might be a bit on the short side for her torso. I think...

Manji
11-08-2008, 12:17 PM
Yeah you're right. Funny thing is I usually draw arms too long.

I really like that Scarlett Johansson piece, and you made a really nice fix to it a few pages ago. That said, I think the chin needs a bit of a fix (unless you just want to move on at this point). If you follow the lines of her face down to the chin, you'll see that it sorta tapers off too much, and gives the lower half of her face a really pinched look. I'm having a super hard time verbalizing what I'm talking about here, but if you take a look at her face from a similar angle, hopefully you can see what I mean...

http://thesuperficial.com/assets_c/2007/12/1205_scarlett_johansson_nose_00-thumb-450x675.jpg

I think that it might be that her cheeks are a bit more rounded and full than you portray them to be. Sorry to be so vague here...

Wow... I will be keeping my eye on this thread from now on. Manji, what is your practice routine? What have you done to achieve this level of skill?

Just practice. Nothing more. I focus on line work and line weights and try to keep everything loose. I think that may help. It should also be noted though that listening to all the critiques here and at Conceptart have helped a ton. PJ and CA offer the best critiques in my opinion. I appreciate the comments but I assure I have a long way to go still. ;)

Painter or Photoshop?

Manji
07-28-2009, 09:44 AM
I just started doing figure drawing literally like two weeks ago. Before that I just drew from my imagination and photos. I did use reference for 3 of the faces on this one.

Photoshop I just haven't taken the time to learn Painter. But really I'm wanting to get back to more traditional work but digital allows me to work so much faster.

Porpitude
07-28-2009, 10:10 AM
That's why I asked, you seem to use Photoshop like a traditional medium (very painterly strokes). I would totally recommend Painter because that's what it is designed for. It has a more traditional feel and look to it.

Basically he picks a character and then you pick a movie poster to do using that character. Such as with this one he picked Fairchild and decided to go with Kill Bill as the theme.

Ha Amen. You know it's strange because I kind like my pencil lines but I just can't replicate that in ink. I just get all heavy handed and scared. Its sad really how uptight I get about the whole thing.

Speaking of which here is one last thing before I'm off to bed. Promised myself I would start doing a 20 minute speed paint every night so here is my first. You would never know it by looking at it but it's Avril Lavigne. Long story short there are about 5 women and 3 men who I make every effort to memorize their faces and she is one of them.

Basically I just study the pic for 10 minutes or so then give myself 20 to complete it.

Dude, buy a Pentel brush pen - it's changed inking for me 100%.

Are you talking about the one with actual bristles? I have tried to felt tip ones but not the one with bristles. I was talking to Nat Jones at a show a couple years back and he was telling me about the one with bristles but he said you could only get them from Japan for like $20. Have prices dropped or am I thinking of something totally different?

Bathill8

Try like $3.99 through Blueline Pro. I use the Pentel Color Brush Pen-Black. It's refillable, and you can squeeze the handle to increase the flow.

I'm no expert or pro, but it has been great using it. I just wish I had more time to mess around with it.

I live in Europe, but here I can find Pentel bristle brush pen inp pretty much any art supply store... I'd be surprised if this wasn't the case in the US.

Cool speed paint otherwise. Did you have the photo in front of you while you were painting or is it all from memory? In either case, very nice.

Thanks guys I will definitely look out for those next time I'm at the art store. Or I might just get it online. Thanks though because I actually forgot about those things. Again when Nat Jones was telling me about it it was probably more like 4 years ago so maybe they were still "new"?

Yeah the speedpaint is drawn from memory. I study the pic for 10 minutes or so then give myself 20 to get down what I can.

Yeah I know I thought about that after I posted it. I did this in one setting in like 3 hours. That's why there is so many dark colors...dark colors hide stuff. ;) But yeah the sai bugs me along with her knee being totally screwed up and the cast shadows aren't accurate either.

But what's wrong with me you ask? I wasn't hugged enough by my parents but was hugged way too much by "Uncle Jerry" I think that is what's wrong with me.

Study for an upcoming Draw-off. Its a redesign of the Wicked Witch of the West from Oz. This is the first step of her evolution.

That post of the Wicked Witch of the West is really intriguing. Her "black widow" themed apparel speaks volumes about her character.

When you do a painting don't use pure black.
Try using a dark gray. The black tends to flatten everything out.
Good job, man. Keep it up.

Thanks hardcore. This is only about 60% complete and I just laid in black for the base shape. I'm actually going to do it in purple and green

Wuuuuuuuu That last one is AWESOME. The second one, however, isn't working for me. I think firstly, you should show her face because you are trying to show transformation in 3 pictures so every visual aspect counts and face is a VERY important one. The skull mask does not work as a symbol within this transformation. Her figure also seems a bit stiff and stocky. Did you mean to make her look a little bit chubbier? Also I think it would work better if she started to crouch over a bit.

Thanks guys and I agree that the "red one" is the weakest I will work on it some more tonight. I haven't been able to get what I want out it yet.

I like the atmosphere in the middle one, but the witch looks a little squatty...but I agree that last one is boss, Manj....... you are the Phil Noto of PJ, man.
