So this is something I came up with for the Ten Ton Studio challenge. I've never painted a comic character before... this was a totally new experience for me. Please let me know what you all think... peas, DDg

I really dig the second image. A lot.
The hulk painting isn't bad, but it isn't great either. I think the background is killing the majority of it. Even though I do think you should use warm colors in the bg the fire just isn't believeable. And the lighting seems a little off. The fire is behind him, but it's only lighting up the (our) right side of his face. I have no doubt that with practice you'll be awesome at painting because you're already one hell of an artist, but that's one just isn't doing it for me.
Post some more please.

The hulk painting isn't bad, but it isn't great either.
True... I fell into all the traps that I know not to with other mediums.. An example: the fire bg, I added it on late in the painting to add a bit of color contrast- hots and colds. The hair... may I be reincarnated as Larry so that Moe may pop me in the head for this one.
Thanks for the responses... really appreciate it.

hulk portrait will improve once you darken the background or make it totally black ... and maybe crop out a little of the lighter part of his chest at the bottom... you rock and inspire, chief...

Wow at that spidey vs sinister 6 (technically 5) drawing. The black background add a lot to it. Those hulks are good too, especially the one where hes screaming.

I absolutely love the Hime No Mononoke movie... that piece is excellent.
I'd prefer to see the boargod/hatedemon done darker. but that is sweet.
DancingDoorGuy
12-14-2006, 11:24 AM
Karim- Thanks! Somebody else said that about Venom too.. and I see your point entirely, thanks for responding!
Dawnsknight- Thanks man! I really appreciate your feed back here... I was thinking about doing the Hate-demon in a darker tone when I started the piece, but when it came time to actually do it, and I chickened out. I didn't want to darken in the boar god and lose all his detail... nor did I want to darken him just a little and therefore lose the main character in the back ground. Your typical rock and a hard place. I choose to leave it... Maybe I'll color him in w/ photoshop and then darken the boar-god??? hmmmm...
Thank again guys.

Drawing a dog...
the reference doesn't really capture the dog very well... it makes it look more German Shepard then it does in real life. I've had to "play" with it to make the drawing look more like the actual pup.
Anyway, thought I'd share...

darken his right ear a little so it doesn't get pushed back into space....
i think the dog's ears in the photo are a little wider and shorter...
and you shrunk his forehead... give him a little more room for brains..
nice rendering, though ...

Can't believe I haven't scanned this thread yet. You've got some great stuff in here - especially that Galactus piece, the Star Jammers, and the Hulk sketches. You've got a nice Charest-type-thing going with some of your hatching. Keep it up.

hey guy, that miami -pimp -powerman poster is awesome.
I know a guy who used to go to dog shows and do portraits of people's dogs. He says it's way easier than doing portraits of people and apparently he made good money. he set up something like a caricature stand. something to think about if you had a good time drawing that dog. it looks like you had fun.

here's a quickie i put together for this weeks ten ton sketch challenge. The character is Asajj Ventress... I'd not heard of her before the challenge. After Episode One I left my love for the force at the side of the road...
Crits and comments are welcomed, but, just remember, I know the frame/lightsaber/background part sucks big time... OK. have at it.

i'd like to see her w/out the backgorund (i know you know, but it's hard to stare at with the glarin' red, ya know?)
ideas: you could turn that read into a nice long deep horizontal red and throw some urban sci-fi backround hints ...
basically, anything to soften that red so she comes closer to the front stage....
she looks cool ...
maybe the saber in her left hand should be hanging down, on an opposite angle of the other one... i think that would look better....
cheers!

I don't know if this ****s as a double post or not... I posted this doodle for the F.F. redesign challenge, but since that's not a "feed-back" type thread, I figured I'd post it over here as well. If it's a problem I'll take this one down...
anywho... until then C&C are welcomed!

Love the interpretation of an aged Reed and Johnny Storm. Reed Richards looks like a total brainiac and the human torch reminds me of my brother, except he's got flames. Would of been nicer to see this as more linear than with the added blacks on Sue and Reed.

Thanks for the feed back...
By "more linear" do you mean that you'd rather not see such heavy black shades on Reed and Sue? I just want to be sure I understand what ya mean...
I put heavy blacks in to add contrast between them and Johnny. I wanted to color this in, but did have the time... if I ever get to it I'll be sure to post it. :)
Anywho... here's a quickie I did for Ten Ton Studios "no-prize" contest. I'm not very happy with the line look... you can tell it's rushed, but I really like the concept.

whenever i look at the FF pic it looks like sue has evolved into a snake woman. it might have been better to move ben to the other side of the pic instead of having reed, sue and ben all in one line like they are... then we'd also be able to see where sue's legs end and reed's body begins.

Best Chapel I've seen. Don't know whether it''s because this is good or the other Chapels were bad. I'd go with the former. Seriously though, this is quite a nice take on a character who always looks like he's going to pop a vein .
