A thread of my very own, where I can abuse your eyes and soul!

Feel free to fawn or flout, folks.

I draw myself a lot. It's not because I'm vain or anything. It's because I'm damn handsome, and I love looking at myself.

rubbertrunk - Thanks, man. I was trying out a brush pen on that, and I think my shakey hand shows in the lines a bit.

Liquidpope - ;)

NickGuy - That one is kinda funny. "Damn it, John. You can't keep coming here like this..." Every so often I'll do a few really little shots like that to work on my perspective (which I'm terrible at).

Juan2.0 - Well, since you asked so nicely...

Here are a couple more things. The pieces themselves are pretty big, and I'm too lazy to stitch them together on the computer so I just took pictures. Please excuse the fuzzyness.

I was listening to Daft Punk a lot when I was drawing this. The chick is obviously inspired by NYC Mech.

Hey Blue...Me green. I'm sure you draw more than you post and if not you should.

I like your drawing style and you seem to be refining it. I can't offer more in terms of advice other than do a lot more drawing when you get the chance. Bringing a sketchbook with you when you take a trip for a day gets you the chicks.;)

When people say draw for life, it's essential to practice if you have a desire to develop. It gives your drawings life because you are forced to make really quick recordings of your surrounding and what you'll find is that your mind figures out quick solutions to interpret the way we see.

But that should be accompanied by seeing the old masters' work. Not to copy but to absorb. I think a lot of my drawing problems even though I have others were unlocked by looking at Michelangelo's and Da Vinci's drawing in real life.

By the way. Use one drawing a page and don't draw one at the back unless it's crucial. You'll find it'll smudge your work. you don't want that because it's fun looking at old work. It'll show you how far you've evolved with consistent effort.

Well, hello there sketch thread. Long time no see.

So what's new with me since I last posted in this thread? Well, not much. I got a nice big Wacom tablet a few months back and I've been practising a lot with it.

When I'm just sketching and doodling with it, I usually don't save the file. I'll just delete the layer I'm working on and start scribbling on a new one.

I'm going to try and keep this thread updated at least once a week. Now, let's rock.

A handsome fella, still very much scribbled, and at a fun angle. I'm practising my extreme angles a lot more nowadays.

http://cody.kungfukoala.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/faces.jpg
Just a few faces done with the aid of a mirror. The goal isn't to get the face to look exactly like mine. At the moment I'm just trying to learn new angles.

I'm learning (very very slowly) how to paint in Photoshop.

http://cody.kungfukoala.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/PooortraitMarch4.jpg
This is a link to a self-portrait I did (from a photograph). I learned a lot while doing it. The eyes are a little googly and the round brush I always use can sometimes reduce the crispness of the lines.
http://cody.kungfukoala.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/Portrait.gif
This is a little gif of my process.

http://cody.kungfukoala.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/still.png
A monochrome still life. Took about 2 hours to do.

http://cody.kungfukoala.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/ladydeath2.jpg
This was going to be my entry for the Lady Death draw-off, but about half-way through I decided against it. Too many problems. She's too blue (Lady Death sometimes has a bit of a bluish tint to her but I took it too far) and there were some anatomy issues.

GO the Orator! Nice concept happening. Hope u render it like the Sloth draw off piece.

Thanks! Actually, I've pretty well finished my Orator piece, and it's rendered in a simpler, flatter style.

I think it still looks pretty good, though. ;)

Dri

Yeh, flatter style works for the concept. But looking at the WIP her head looks rather small. Hope you addressed that. Good luck.

Chico Blue
04-09-2008, 04:56 PM
Thanks!

For the most part I used a round, hard-edge brush with size and opacity set to pressure. It takes a bit of getting used to at first and you have to be careful if you want crisp edges, but it makes the rendering and sculpting of forms really enjoyable.

My second ThunderBrawl entry. Honestly, it gets a resounding "meh" from me. Orator's face is a little off, and the colouring is weak. On the plus side, I did get to see Orator drawn by Nate and Korintic which is totally raaaaad.

Thanks for the words, Repo Man. All of my newer inking stuff is digital and is done in Manga Studio EX.

Repo Man

Cool. I also just switched over from traditional inking to Manga Studio EX this past month or so. Being able to erase is worth the price of admission, IMHO even though I find my inking style is changing somewhat.

I like the rendering style you get from the program. It looks like a traditional pen and ink drawing. Keep it up. :)

Picked out of the of the designs, and now I'm just playing with it and letting it evolve. I'm still not all that happy with the head, and I think I'm going to change it a bit. Maybe add some cybernetic stuff.
