Most of the stuff I normally show around here ends up being finished. I'll use this area to dump the scraps that never made it there.

I had a bunch of extra orange and yellow watercolor left on the plate after I finished a commission... and decided not to waste it. Did this quick sketch with the eye dropper of my india ink bottle and then used that extra paint...

Here's a quick sketch of a bird with some quick watercolors thrown on it.

I really dig your use of watercolor. You're one of the reason I gave watercolors a chance.

I'm also envious of your ability to lay down blacks and whites in the proper places. Everything I do seems to be very gray. Look forward to seeing more.

Thanks man.

You gotta think about contrast and white space. Some of my pencilwork looks pretty grey, one thing I like to do is erase highlights back into the pencils if I'm doing grey tone work. When you lay down some grey and erase into it, it creates a nice, soft ambient highlight.

This was a quick blueline sketch from a figure drawing class that I actually DID turn into a finished work (can be found around here somewhere).

I had a bunch of stuff I was going to upload, until my computer at home crashed.

I might rescan them and upload them all in one shot. Just need to find the time. I'll try to get better about uploading new stuff as well.

your sketches and illustrations are very energetic ... even the water color of the face ... it isn't action-ish, but it carries energy.

I think one of my problems that I need to get over. Is that I have a hard time just sketching. It's like an obsession that once I sit down and start drawing everything has to be finished. I don't know when that started but I was just thinking about that this morning as I was looking through my sketchbook.

shoryukenmaster

I think that beats the alternative of only being able to sketch and not finish things.

But if you really feel it's a problem, maybe you could try taking a sketch book out some where (a zoo, a park, starbucks) and drawing a bunch of the things you see. You or your subject might not sit long enough for you to finish. Either that or give yourself a certain amount of time to draw things. Just some thoughts.

--EDIT--

It's really cool to see you using ink. I've always wondered how you would ink stuff. A couple of things that I noticed that look a little off though are the pictures underneath the tigers eye. The one on the left the guys teeth don't seem to match the direction the skull is going in. And his ear is missing all the inside parts. The horse looks really big or the guy really small. Still stellar work though. Keep posting. :)

This may sound weird, but personally, I rather enjoy your inked stuff over your pencils any day. They just seem more...I dunno what the word I'm looking for is...perhaps more life-like or they just have more weight to them than your pencils usually do. Either way, still some really nice stuff you got there.

Thanks Juan. If I had the time, I'd ink a hell of alot more of my stuff. Most of my pencils are drawn with inking in mind, with the exception of my toned pencils.

Brian, good suggestions. Definitely something I'll be thinking about.

I'd have to agree with Juan but for a different reason. You enjoy drawing and viewers can tell. But I think your thinking is different when you pencil because you can always build on pencils so you can tend to over render when you can stop at a certain point.

Inking on the other hand is more definite and you have to think more about suggestion as black mass carries a lot of weight. The inking in your work is fluid and just the right amount of details without going over the top.

I like both techniques but your inking leaves the viewer to use their imagination and piece it together. By the way nice work here :)

I agree, Greendri. I'll often take out alot of the clutter when I ink.

I love all your stuff Dave but I wish you'd try more watercolor in your comic art. Those watercolors you have posted are just amazing. I think it ramps up your art to no end.

Not really diggin' he forearm on the out stretched arm of Magnus. It looks like it has loose skin around the wrist. Really like the rest of the pose however, very dynamic.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to work to differenciate it so that the comparison isn't made. Sucks that Heman cornered the market on skull dwellings.

Looking good so far Bovey I look forward to seeing what this will become. The only critique I really have is I don't really like the neck area the tendons etc just don't converge right. Oh and don't sweat the digital photo thing I am more guity of that than anyone.

Thanks Mr. Hades.

I started that draw off series as a way to motivate people to improve each month. With 5 months out of the way I thought it might be cool to post all 5 of my entries together to see what the progress might look like. I've come in 2nd place each month with the exception of January where I didn't finish in the top 3.

Every one of these pieces rock. Especially the Tarzan. I think it's because it has more colors than the others. Nonetheless every piece is consistent. Looking forward to more.

Very nice Conan sketch. Only thing noticeable is that Conan's head seems small compared to his body. Possibly an illusion from his left arm foreshortened in front of him.
