Would a pro boxer taught some takedown defense get a lot of knockout wins ala Chuck Lidell, Mike Swick.

Makes me wonder if Tyson should try it out. Since he's pretty much need the money.

With the talk of Bruce Lee fairing UFC, how would Ali fare?

I remember reading this in a magazine once. A martial arts trainer discussed boxing as one of the under-rated forms of martial arts.
Bruce Lee for example took on many of the practises of boxing, because the training covers stamina, strength and speed.
Likewise, you learn how to defend. Talking of Ali, people forget that in the ring he was ruthless- when an opponent got a cut on his eye, every hit Ali aimed went to the eye, and every punch connected to that eye.
In other words, a truly brutal boxer would be hard to cope with.

No. Well they could become good at it if they really put in the time, but the way you present it it's like... a boxer... give him a tutorial in take down defense and watch him go. But when it comes down to it, a puncher can always be brought down, Liddell also has training as a wrestler though so he knows what he's doing.

Not always, that's the point. A quick heavyweight would be very difficult to deal with, as he'd be smart enough to keep his distance.

There's no real point in arguing this they're two completely different things. A boxer would have to seriously up his skill set. Just as a MMA fighter would have to train completely different for a strictly boxing match.

Tyson in his Prime would do superbly in UFC. He's got more than a punchers chance. Now against Mirko Crokop of PrideFC not so sure.

I think that boxing/striking is the best way to beat people in MMA once your on the ground there are too many variables.

Boxers would have a hard time defending wrestlers. But I think in the long run, with a little bit of training they would become the most dangerous fighters in MMA

Just a pure straight forward boxer would be screwed.
He'd stand a chance in a match where only strikes (punches, kicks etc) are allowed.
but

I think the main threat would be grapplers.

Keeping distance is easier said than done when you've got someone like Tito Ortiz or Royce Gracie chargin' after you.

Besides, Tito learned to box just for the added power and variety, so technically, he could go toe-to-toe with the average boxer.

Mike Tyson would die horribly in the Octagon. He even admitted that he can no longer fight a full match -- he can only handle four rounds. Body isn't what it used to be and everything. Personally, I think he just forgot how to get mad at people, which is why he sucketh bad now.

Ali, no idea. He was king of trashtalking and pychological warfare in the ring back in his heyday, but honestly, I wouldn't count on him going longer than four fights.

As I said before, actually watch the tapes of Ali (esp. v Foreman, a man considerably larger than him). Also anyone who's read Night Train knows that you've got to be pretty badass to take down Sonny Liston

I've seen some clips on youtube where of Tyson in his prime ducking punches. Those won't work in the mma's where knees and kicks are allowed.
